Top Five - Worst Video Game Plot Twists

SFL Chronicle: Ah, video game plot twists! They can turn an otherwise great story into a brilliant story (think of the original inFamous here for a moment). Most of the time, however, plot twists in video games are just plain bad. Sometimes so bad that they lead to a lot of hilarity. So let’s talk about the elephant in the room; this top five is about the worst plot twists in video games…

What the fuck did I just read?

humbleopinion5218d ago

And a poor one that is.
The whole 5-2 list seems like a void filler for some public whining the writer felt the need to share concerning the fact that Shepard was recovered from a near death situation at the Mass Effect 2 intro sequence. But the ridiculous thing is that this isn't even an actual plot twist. It was already revealed in the Teaser Trailer ages before the game came out:
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

The actual twist in the game is that the teaser made people think that Shepard died and turned into geth after dying, and instead it was revealed that he's alive and working with Cerberus. The Geth we see in the teaser then responsible for another awesome plot twist towards the end of the game.

/v/-quality trolling at its finest.

Weird shit in there, BUT I will agree with the ME2 thing, they never touched on shepard coming back to life, if he had this crazy bouts or some shit that would have made the game much cooler, and it would have helped the dark atmosphere they tried to implement.

Legion5219d ago

Why again do we need to harp on people needing to be emotional about a near death moment? It happens to so many people all the time, and you see the stupid plots on TV or the films about people getting all emotional and then changing or reflecting on their lives.

Sorry... in real life it rarely brings a come to Jesus moment to those that aren't religious. For the vast majority of people they never speak or talk of the subject and quickly move on with their life.

Only in TV and movies do you get the bad realization moments where people try to comprehend something more from their death or near death moments.

I am glad ME2 didn't fall into the typical Oprah moment where Sheppard needs to sit down on the couch and explain that he is a new man and cry into the big bosoms of hers. And then of course he would have to jump on the couch and shout his love for Jack or Miranda.

Nothing wrong with his thoughts(or non-thoughts)on death. But I actually prefer Jacks thoughts on Death when she meets new enemies... "HELLO, DEAD PEOPLE!". Simple greetings get you everyplace.

I don't like the thought process behind the choices. To take FFVII as an example, the choice seems to be explained by that the twist has been done before (what hasn't?), but because people actually care for this choice. Also, Aerith has as both as much personality as 32-bit and two CDs will allow. For what it's worth it was a sympatethic character, that had had a huge build up relationship with several of the other characters, that was suddenly removed from story and gameplay without pre-warning. Don't know if that's been done before.

If a list, which is pretty much the cheapest way to write an article to begin with, is going to be good enough for N4G it should have some overall point to it and be well written. Some objectivity and research wouldn't hurt either.

EDIT: The sin-gularity pun is funny though :)

KFox1095219d ago

To be entirely honest, aside from my honest frustration with Mass Effect 2, most of the article is meant to be humorous. It's not really meant to be taken as seriously as other things I've written on there. You are very much right about your points here. Glad you liked the pun, by the by!

Tommykrem5219d ago

Ah, I suppose I read this with my serious glasses on. There are some good jokes here all right.

redking3155219d ago (Edited 5219d ago )

did i just read an article in which the author stated that Dragon Age II was one of the best games this generation? Better than Mass Effect 2? I mean sure the endless pandering to Mass Effect 2 does get on my nerves it was a great game, but it is hard to deny that it was better than DAII. Please, if this is the world my children are going to inherit kill me now so they will never be born

Edit. Oh it was a joke post

Slugg3r5218d ago

God of war doesn't succeed in action department?

swice5218d ago

Apparently not.

Also, Metroid Other M had the absolute best gameplay this generation.

Wow.

You can thank FF7 scaring Baldur's Gate 2's director 'S***less' for every RPG since

But BG2 didn't emerge in a vacuum, and in a recent chat with Slandered Gaming it emerged that—while we can thank BG2 for a lot of our favourite RPGs since—we have a whole other game to thank for BG2. That'd be Final Fantasy 7, which lit a fire under BG2 director James Ohlen to go all out with the game's structure and companions, per Trent Oster—who worked on the original Baldur's Gate and has since become CEO of Beamdog, the studio behind the BG1 and BG2 Enhanced Editions.

switch only for 7 8 and 9

remake and rebirth ps5

S2Killinit97d ago

7,8,9 only Switch
7 remake & rebirth only PS5?
Is this accurate? Wish it was all for both.

-Foxtrot99d ago

Why can’t they just do a cool classic collection with VII, VIII and IX in with some goodies similar to what they did with the Pixel Remaster.

FinalFantasyFanatic97d ago

I would honestly go for a Remaster Collection, just AI upscale some textures (there are really good fan mods for that), widescreen everything where possible, higher native resolution, etc...

It seems like a no-brainer to make such a large portion of what was FF's golden age into a collection of it's own.

gold_drake97d ago

this is square we're talking about.

VersusDMC98d ago

Weird that 7 and 8 are together for 40 and 9 is 40 on it's own.

8 should be the one on it's own as it actually has redone models.

jznrpg98d ago (Edited 98d ago )

I have ff8 ps4 remastered physical euro version. They should have put these on PS5 physically so lame.

B5R98d ago

I'm actually so tired of hearing about FFIX. Just replayed it with Moguri Mod earlier this month. That might as well be the definitive version.

Video Game Franchises That Switched Genres

Video games are always evolving. Okay, video games are sometimes evolving. And that’s especially true for long-standing franchises where innovation is essential to keep fans from getting, well, a bit bored. But there are plenty of franchises that just completely changed the game.
