Rage's massive size may create hurdles for gamers

Thats right - the next big hit in the apocalyptic world series of video games, Rage, has been confirmed to have an absolutely massive size that could inconvenience its many consumers. Though, at this point, the large size isn't anything extraordinarily abnormal, this is definitely one of the bigger ones.

I'll always take a mandatory install over swapping discs. Not that swapping discs would be a deal breaker by any means. I'd just prefer not to.

how many Disc...... that's a problem with in it's self. Disc are lame as faster Internet speeds and cheap 1TB HDD are the norm.

Next console Gen

1. NO Disc and Digital Download only
2. 1TB HDD are cheap and fast and won't scratch

that way editors can spend time on more relevant stories like.....any new news on MGS-Rising? What about that game Agent? Any info on GTAV? What's the wiiu's price?

narutogameking5355d ago

faster internet is cheaper than an occasional $60 game? Nope. Not in the United States. A lot games aren't even released as digital downloads.

KonGreat5355d ago

Well if the TB HDD gets released on console it will cost you lots of $$$ because then they will be 'specifically made for the xbox/ps'. Just look at the prices for console HDD now, its ridiculous.
But it's not a bad idea though!

Tyre5355d ago (Edited 5355d ago )

ATi_Elite U r lame, discs are cool, especially the Blu ones, Next Console Gen hopefully still has some sort of physical carrier, download only is soooo boring and cold.

Christopher5354d ago

Next gen will be on a hard medium with digital options similar to what XBL and PSN are doing now.

1. Retailers need their piece of the pie, otherwise they won't sell the hardware.

2. Users want the option to sell and buy second-hand. Digital will result in less sales overall.

3. Lower sales means less money for the hardware companies as well since they can't charge licensing fees for non-disc-based mediums, only distribution costs which costs them more than actually putting it out on disc.

gamingdroid5354d ago

Next generation, digital releases will be day and date with the disc version.

In regards to pricing, I'm not sure if it will be cheaper. Retailers still have the upper hand, so console makers will not price it to compete, but rather try and get another segment/market.

Besides those clearance sales at the store is awesome!

davekaos5354d ago

This is in reply to gogospeedracer as i cant reply direct for off topic.

all i can say is what a waste of money. that intel ssd will easily add 300$ to the price, also you mention intel smart response so i assume your using this so why have you got an 80gb SSD as smart response only requires 20gb, sure you could say the other 60gb will be partitioned but expect alot of BSOD's with that as the drivers for this are absolutely shit.

All in all you thought you looked good posting all that but any real rig builder just laughed at you so hard.

BTW my OCZ revodrive 3 x2 480gb pisses over 3 of them intel ssd's in a raid 0 config, if you even know what that is.

wsoutlaw875354d ago

@KonGreat ps3 hdd are not specifically made for the ps3, they use standard laptop hdds so they are no more expensive than any other hard drives really. Xbox hard drives how ever are definitely marked up.

vortis5354d ago

Sorry to say, ace, but here in the US of A it costs and arm and a leg just to get internet service fast enough to play OnLive (3MBPs or higher is required) and then we have all sorts of ridiculous bandwidth caps that sees service providers hiking up the price even higher if the cap is exceeded and then your service speed is bottlenecked.

I don't know about you but I would prefer just paying $60 for a game and being done with it as opposed to counting every single GB for every game I purchase.

madjedi5354d ago (Edited 5354d ago )

Lol yeah next gen will be disc based, it will also use traditional hdd with ssd's being too expensive and lacking in storage space. You digital download pushers need a reality check your all digital console is likely not happening for another 20-30 yrs.

Just because your new neighborhood or apartments has access to high speed internet doesn't mean everyone in the country or world has it. Your trying to get newly designed hardware to run on an infrastructure that is 50-60 yrs old if not older, that was never intended to be used for it.

And stop being stupid, you'll see a flash memory cartridge replace optical discs, long before any console goes all digital.

Oh Nooo seriously really, you paid that kinda money out dont worry i wont show you up here by telling everyone. That you didnt custom build this yourself and just found out that you got that built by the supplyer maingear. Witch the case isnt really by maingear its by silverston.
And the cooling is more than possibly corsair witch bought by cool-it.
16gb ram dude seriously na na na. You got dun way to splash the cash. Im happy with my setup and it didnt even come close to that price i have a i7 2600k at 4.8ghz. but with a better mobo that keeps cool under preassure.

TIP there ways of saying what you got and places were to say it that wasnt the way.
9/10 for what you got on serious note. But
3/10 on the price you paid.

Belasco5355d ago

You just out-douched gogospeedracer with your stupid reply.

hiredhelp5355d ago (Edited 5355d ago )

Then you have no idea why i stated what i did.
Im stating basicly he didnt need to waste soo much money and boast about it.

Why i stated about me was mearly a example of what you can buy without splashing out silly money to get good system.

Sadly there many on here love good gaming pc that cant afford too. So when i saw his comment Thats why i had to say my pieace.

da_2pacalypse5355d ago

you guys are aware that it's actually 2 discs right? 3rd disc is for multiplayer. and then 2 discs for sp. I'm guessing you will switch halfway through the story, while the open world is in both discs...

BeOneWithTheGun5355d ago

Don't be a voice of reason here! Shame!

bub

cooperdnizzle5354d ago

They have came out and said this many times, the game is no longer open world. They just give you multiple options and which mission to do at any one given time. But you cant just go through the hole map like you would on Red Dead, or fall out. Go look it up. No longer an open world game.

da_2pacalypse5354d ago

did you just say fallout/red dead are not open world? lol you drunk?

frostyhat1235355d ago

i beg to differ, Disc swapping is much faster

Drac5354d ago

The thing is with a pre-load, you can do something else while it's happen then you don't have to worry about it again.

_Aarix_5354d ago

Vice versa for me but both are not a big deal and theyre both not a big deal equal.

zeddy5354d ago

id much prefer buying a new console hardrive than buying a new gaming pc. obviously the pc graphics will be great but i just dont care.

I perfer disk swapping over a 8 gig install...

firelogic5355d ago

Well if you want the best experience possible, and why wouldn't you, you're going to have to install the 360 version too. Up to 22GB of it. Or install disc 1, play, uninstall disc 1, install disc 2, play.

So I don't know what you 360 fanboys are laughing about.

videoxgamexfanboy5355d ago

Didnt no i was a 360 fanboy or laughing last time i checked i owned all systems...and i dont hqve to install if i dont want to thats the good part about 360

yamzilla5355d ago (Edited 5355d ago )

if you want the best experience possible, you are going to need a gaming pc!

Anything less is a compromise! By far, the definitive version will be the PC version!

Like every multiplat game....the difference between ps3 and 360 is almost non-existant

The difference between console and pc is at least, AT LEAST one generation, almost 2!

BrianC62345355d ago

One of the people from id said he recommends installing the first disc on the 360. When you finish that install the second disc. The PS3 install will include the highest resolution textures. Maybe this means you need to install the files to the hard drive or get lower resolution textures. It will make the game run a lot better loading from the hard drive instead of the slower DVD drive.

Gamer30005355d ago

whatever you like
but carmack said
you need to install 22gb on your xbox to make the xbox version on par with the ps3 version

so if you do disc swapping you will get
the worst version

JaredH5355d ago (Edited 5355d ago )

He didn't say that...
...lol at the disagree

Gamer30005354d ago

no he did say that

"On the 360 we don't have a partial install option; it's all or nothing, which is kind of unfortunate. It means you have to install 21/22GB of stuff which takes a long time but if you've got it and you play it on the 360 that's the way to go."

Vaud-Villian5354d ago

Your quote has absolutely no connection, even delusionally implied, to the PS3 version.

No Way5354d ago Show
Voxelman5354d ago

He also said he wished that the PS3 had a full install option and that it went PC>360 full install>PS3>>360 disc

Parasyte5354d ago

Regardless of whether you install the DATA to the hard drive you'll still have to use the discs to access that data. You will still have to change discs when the game calls for it.

All installing discs to the HD does is decrease the games load times and decreases the amount of time it takes for textures to load in game.

Allowen5355d ago

Well, the next Gen of consoles and games is coming soon !

If you complained about 50G of the blu-ray disc space was not needed then you got to think about it again.
Until now only SONY PS3 exclusive games would go beyond 25G but now it is starting to become common size for high end games.

Just look at a few exemples of games 3rd party /multi platform that can surpass 20- 25G size on this gen already :
-Final Fantasy 13
-Rage
-LA Noire
-Doom 4 (it is rumored to use FOUR xbox 360 6.8G discs)
-Final Fantasy Versus 13 ( that I am guessing )

The point is, for next gen you will need a Blu ray disc drive for your PC or at least 2T HDD as basic size to hold downloaded games off Steam .

The next Xbox will probably use at NO LESS then 25G discs like the ones that will be used on the Nintendo Wii U .

No RPG (Non MMoRPG) game actually did pass 15G ,not even with all the DLCs and expansions.
because of this I say that ID Software , Square-Enix , SONY and RockStar are ahead of their time thinking on the future.

_Aarix_5354d ago

Btw As of a while back...3 discs= 24gb so many games can use 3 discs when needed.

madjedi5354d ago

Problem is ms wants to charge a heavy royalty on games with multiple discs, unless they recently changed that. Hence encouraging devs to release a sub par game by cutting things out to avoid having to use 3+ discs and pay a steep royalty charge.

zero_gamer5355d ago

You might want to consider investing in a hard drive upgrade for your PS3 should you not have enough free space to squeeze that game in. New hard drives can be inexpensive compared to MS's proprietary hard drives (not trolling the 360 by any means, it's a great system). Any 2.5 SATA hard drive designed for notebooks can also work in a PS3. I personally recommend a WD Scorpio Blue of any varying size. Scorpio Black is better in performance but costs more per GB and Blue works just fine in a PS3.

Chnswdchldrn5355d ago

Preinstalled via steam with plenty of room to spare. My PC is ready. I do not like the idea of those many discs.

I'm still learning how to look for the differences. At first I was focusing on shadows for some reason but I don't think that changes much, is it reflections that change?

rashada072535d ago (Edited 2535d ago )

It is supposed to be simulating how light actually works- so yes if light is reflecting off a surface accurately it should show reflection or an effect that matches what you are looking at in the environment. Next time you play a game look at a puddle of water there may be just a "baked" in texture that if you aren't paying attention seems like it is reflecting but it isn't. I would say though if the light is reflecting more accurately I would think that would give more accurate shadows as well.
I am still not 100% sold on it- it looks okay but I can't get over the hardware price jump for better reflections..

Taz X142535d ago

While games won't look immensely better, it opens up more possibilities overall. Understandably, the price jump is huge. But, that can be said for being at the forefront for any new technology. I'm currently using a 2080ti and while I've played a few games that enable it, the gpu also plays everything else incredibly well so it's not like you're buying this tech for ONLY that option. Enthusiasts will pay top dollar to check out the newest things, but this will eventually become an everyday consumer and by then they'll have optimized and become a lot cheaper.

warriorcase2534d ago

Ray/path tracing can be used how the developer wants it to be. Tracing can be used to calculate shadows/lighting, reflection and even audio, where audio waves are calculated on the bounce off material types to simulate enviroment and echos accuratly.

Should also keep in mind that this ray/path tracing system is different and less accurate option from Nvidias RTX branded type. McFly's is a reshade that layers over the top of the game and therefor the quality will vary drastically. For example you can see nice reflection in the Star Wars demo here but it then introduces colour clipping with the light saber. On a video of GTA 5 for example it was incorrectly projecting a reflection of a red car onto the road which caused a very faint red glow on the ground around the car.

If you want to see a good example of a game developed with ray tracing reflection and lighting in mind then you could look up the youtube video of "Control - Exclusive E3 RTX GAMEPLAY Trailer".

DigitallyAfflicted2535d ago

It supposed to add more realistic light Not actually more light effects and explosions

traumadisaster2535d ago

I hate to say it but I’m fine with fake lights, shadows, reflections. I just kind of like the effect, it’s also great it saves resources for other things.

I’ve been checking out some original Xbox games on x360/x1x and the engine has fake light streaming in through a stained glass window, and I love it even though I know it’s not real time lighting. Heck it even shifts as I move about.

I’ve about convinced my self rt and hdr just doesn’t work for me. Before hdr I would even complain damn why are the headlights killing me they are so bright.

I notice most frame rate, then jaggies, then resolution; with the last two interchangeable depending.

Other day watched an enthusiast rave over 4k and the poor guy was in 1080p. I played the same game the night before and thought wow this is clean, I wonder if it’s 4k, but knew differently and I thought wow even resolution is not always important. The next day he apologized and was surprised he could be fooled.

RaidenBlack2535d ago

EA should have released the Crysis Trilogy Remaster for this gen.

FGHFGHFGH2530d ago

How come the lightsabers don't give off any light? Even in the EA star wars game the guy uses it to light up a dark cave. I guess if it is using frostbite it will support rtx cards.
