I find it funny how Sony seems to be fixing all of the problems people complained about yet people are complaining that they're fixing the problems. Seriously WTF!? People complained the price was too high, they dropped it and brought out another sku for entry level users. People complained about there not being enough games, well naturally that changed with time. I don't know where people believe these magical games that require no dev time whatsoever come from but when you find out please let me know.

Devs complained about Sony not giving them enough tools and info, they fixed it. Devs complained about the fees for development, Sony is helping to alleviate that. Seriously if all you guys are going to do is whine and moan about how they're desperate and trying to get people, please never buy a PS3 as I wish not to see you on the PSN polluting games.

This is a good first step.
Other good next steps would be allow people to develop 3rd party XMB application tools like movie & music players (with every codec imaginable), word processors, web browsers for it.
Then there'd be no need for the hassle of installing linux, and we get all the functionality of a PC!

Just look at the great content from user generated themes and backgrounds available for the system now and imagine the kind of applications that people could make for this system!

i think a lot of people in the industry and game developers know that sony will be back on top very soon..

PS3 retail pricecut with 200 Euro/Dollar from 600 Euro/Dollar within a half year (Europe) and a year (USA) and the devkits price spliced in two and still Sony fangirls don't want to admit Sony is desperate???

Well if you see these early pricedrops, you can see they ARE. No one can deny that. If your market position is bad, you need to drop the price. The original XBOX had to slash the price pretty fast after release, because they needed to enter more market share. The 360 though is going the right way, a pricecut came in its 2nd year of life (thats the healthy/normal way) and just from 399 to 349. It might go to 299 just before Christmas. At that point, it'll have cut 25% of its original price.

But damn, 200 Euro/Dollar within a half year/year is a stunning 33% of the original PS3 price. That's just pure desperation. As are these devkits prices.

PS3 fangirls can scream whatever they want, but the 360 sold more systems after a year then the PS3 did. At the end of 2006 the 360 had sold about 9 mln. systems, the PS3 is now on what close to 6 mln.? They won't sell another 3 million in the next 1.5 month. They just won't.

Therefore, Sony is doing these acts of desperation. TO try to get the market back. What if MS cuts the 360 Premium price to 279 to 299 Euro/Dollar?

have been acting so hard on Sony for the past 2 and a half years. It's actually because of that pressure that we finally have a great online service (PSN), a $399 price point, Dual Shock 3 instead of Sixaxis (or the dreaded boomerang), and huge array of great software for both 2007 and 2008.

But now that they're delivering, I think it's time to tone it down a bit and just enjoy what they're giving us. I'm starting to get the hint though that the media is going to come down hard on Microsoft starting in 2008.

1. when the Playstation 3 launched, it was too expensive for most gamers.

2. when the Playstation 3 launched, dev kits for the console were too expensive for smaller developers (remember, these companies aren't buying just *ONE dev kit, but *MANY. 10 dev kits could probably run $200,000).

3. when launched, the X Box 360 cost $400.

4. the X Box 360 Elite cost $450.

5. the X Box 360 Elite, Premium, and Arcade/Core, don't come with a Blu Ray or HD DVD drive.

6. *ALL Playstation 3 SKUs come with a Blu Ray drive, Hard drive of some sort, and built in Wi Fi (excepting the discontinued 20gig PS3).

7. the X Box 360 sold roughly 6-7 million units in it's first year, with a $300 and $400 price tag, with *NO competition from anyone, Sony, Nintendo, Nokia, *WHATEVER.

8. the Playstation 3 has sold roughly 5-5.5 million units in it's first year, with a $500 and $600 price tag (the $400 unit was released in November 2nd, two weeks shy of it's year birthday. the effects of it's release haven't really been felt yet, so i'm not including it in my fact sheet), amidst *HEAVY competition from a $300-$450 X Box 360, and a $250 Wii. not to mention, for the first 8 months of it's release, there were slim pickings when it came to games, barring a few notable exceptions like Resistance, Oblivion, Motorstorm, and VF5.

9. the cost of HDTVs have been dropping significantly. i just saw a 22 inch 720p set for $400. a 32inch Samsung, 720p, is on sale at Best Buy currently for $700 (normally $1000, but there's an instant $300 savings on it). this means that the price of entry for HDTVs isn't as drastic as it used to be, and if you really, *REALLY wanted one, you could get one. you don't *NEED that 60inch monster 1080p set in order to enjoy Gears of War or Uncharted. it's nice, but not necessary. HD is HD.

10. stores everywhere are phasing out SDTVs, and pimping their HD stock. consumers are listening, and HD adoption rate is growing at a significant pace. this is *GOOD news for consoles like the Playstation 3 and X Box 360. by the end of 2009, i predict a significant amount of homes in the US will have HDTVs (i'm going to go out on a limb and say, at the least, 75%). the rest of the world already seems to have hopped on the HD bandwagon, just not here in the US.

here's a few things that, under no circumstances, should be taken as bad news:

1. there are more PS3 games out now, multi-platform and exclusive. metacritic has, out of 102 games listed, 52 of them are rated 75 and up. that's half (50%)of the number of PS3 games out there. so there is *SOMETHING out there at least worth a rental. 7.5/10 is not a bad score. for interests sake, the Wii has 115 games listed. out of that 115, 23 games are rated 75 and up. that's roughly 25% of the titles released on the Wii are worth a rental at the least. this is not a slight against the Wii, simply food for thought.

2. the Playstation 3 now costs $400. cheaper than the Elite, but *STILL comes with a Blu Ray drive, 40gig HDD, and Wi Fi built in.

3. cheaper dev units. simply means more people (ie, smaller devs), can afford the dev kits. which means more games for the PS3. more games for the PS3 means more customers. more customers mean more devs want to make games for the PS3. more games for the PS3 means...

4. PS3 online is free. it is also lag free. the feature set of the PSN is growing with practically every update. this is all good.

it absolutely *AMAZES me how people can use a story like this to promote a negative agenda.

complaints Sony has addressed:

it is now $400. the 360 is in the $300-$450 price range. the cost of the PS3 is no longer an issue.

Sony released the Dual Shock 3 in Japan this month, and it will hit Stateside sometime in early 2008.

titles like Heavenly Sword, Folklore, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Call of Duty 4, Assassin's Creed, Warhawk, and a bunch of other highly acclaimed titles beg to differ.

but it doesn't seem to matter how many things Sony addresses with the PS3, as the media continues to harp about the mistakes the company has made along the way. yes, they have said and done stupid, arrogant things, but you know what? they're *FIXING that sh*t now. quit b*tching about it already. stop judging the console by what it has done and promised in the past, but what it is doing *NOW, and what it *WILL be bringing to the table in the future.

Now that Jim Ryan is gone just need to remove Herman Hulst from his position! And maybe give Shuhei the position he deserved.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

So now there's certifiable proof that Ryan was in fact "fired", as opposed to when it was first announced that he "retired", in order to save face.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
