Dark Souls Preview | The Controller Online

Scott from The Controller Online writes: "Talk to anyone who has played From Software’s Demon Souls(PS3) and they will likely tell you it is the hardest game they’ve ever played. Dark Souls has been said, by From Software, to be possibly harder than it’s predecessor. It is also said to be longer and is going to feature an open world. Thought it won’t be a direct sequel it has been dubbed, but it’s creators, as a ‘Spiritual Successor’ (I hate that term, their words, not mine). So, it’s likely you’ve heard of Dark Souls but just what kind of game is it and what is it all about? To make things easy, Dark Souls is a 3rd person Action-RPG that is presented in a, for the most part, classic fantasy setting. I could just leave it there, but I’m sure you want to know what is going to make this game different from the others."

Demon's souls was nowhere near as hard as some of the old games I've played.

Remember all those crazy bullet hell games like gradius? Now those were hard games!

How about paper boy?

Sure, demon's souls was hard for the time, but it's really nothing more than a rude awakening for people who have been playing games on the modern day easy difficulty setting. I like a challenge and don't give up on a game just because it's punishing.

u are right but dark souls is probably way more complex than those games uve played

now.. gamers have also become better at games.. even if games have become easier...

controllers also have improve over time.. as the use of sound aswell ..

in others word games have change a lot, the level of control we have today can not be compared...

Yeah, I suppose some of these older games were difficult because the developers made them simple.

You either got good at it or saw the words "game over" a lot.

And you're right, demon's souls was hard because it was complicated. It was about calculation, timing, luck, memory, caution, stats, gut instinct, patience and daring as well as other things.

So much goes into that game without you realising it. I remember picking up the game after about a year of not playing and being all over the place. Then I found my groove and got back into it: just like riding a bike.

Any way, yeah. I agree with what you said

The game is brilliant.

Like it or not, its time to admit Dark Souls is a horror game

Before Elden Ring and Bloodborne, FromSoftware's talents for all things creepy and chilling gave Dark Souls an atmosphere unlike any other.

This feels like the epitome of a 'tepid take'. Dark Souls has always worn its gothic horror influences on its sleeve, it isn't exactly subtle.

DarXyde204d ago

Dark fantasy, I'd say.

Horror is a bit much. Bloodborne is closer to horror.

gold_drake204d ago

mh ur right actually.

dark souls plays around with horror themes without being a straight "horror" game.

bloodborn definitely starts out as that haha.
