Tradition Vs. Innovation: Have Your Say!

In gaming, franchises are king. Sequels, prequels, spin-offs, reboots; ever-developing technology coupled with sometimes only minor tweaks to game features can maintain franchises for decades. Traditions are born through this process of using past success as the foundation of the future. Relying on tradition, however, can be a double-edged sword. Without innovation IGN's most anticipated game of the year would be Pong 2011, not Skyrim, Arkham City, or Battlefield 3, among many, many others.

~Voice Acting~

All games should have voice acting now. Times have changed.

~Random Encounters~

All battles should happen real time. We now have the technology to make it possible now.

~Quick Time Events~

Need to be redone or done away with. Quick time events should be done where you have multiple options. Like press X to counter attack or move the left stick to dodge. I know some games have this, but not all games that have quick time events do. The whole "tap x button" to pry a door open should be done away with. Just make that an animation and leave it at that.

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
