Nintendo highlighting 2D functionality in 3DS

Nintendo Europe’s latest advertisement for the Nintendo 3DS highlights the fact that you can play Nintendo DS games in 2D and that you turn off the 3D whilst playing Nintendo 3DS games. Whether this is evidence that Nintendo are moving away from highlighting the 3D functionality of the machine remains to be seen.

LOLOL Irony strikes again...Oh Nintendo

Kos-Mos5333d ago

Nice trolling. Try reading the article. I know it's hard to accept the fact that Nintendo's got fans in all ages and types of people, thus making more money than ms and sony combined and that only with DS brand.
To reach all numb-nuts(like you) and get them to buy the product you have to give info like this. It's common marketing.

just_looken5333d ago

@kos

fyi Nintendo is facing a path sega took before.

Lovable5333d ago

Lol you're a dumbass KosMos...It is IRONY in the highest level. The name of the device says it all. It is "3DS" and the main selling point is 3d. Now, they're advertising it as 2d. Stop being blind for once.

ronin4life5332d ago

They are not advertising it as 2d, merely stating 3d is optional.
Nintendo isn't going the way of Sega any time soon

Kos-Mos5333d ago

No, they`re saying you CAN play 2d because of the shitstorm from american doctors saying children will damage their eyes. And we all know a certain country that lives in constant fear believes every negative thing a doctor says.
Land of the free? Certainly not free to make own opinions or experiences.

SilentNegotiator5331d ago

"Land of the free? Certainly not free to make own opinions or experiences"

Because medical professionals warned that 3D techniques are harmful for developing eyes?

Get the heck out of here.

Pozzle5333d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if they had to add that because too many people were confused as to whether or not they could play the 3DS in 2D. Whenever I walked into EB Games, sometimes I'd see someone asking if the 3DS could show things in 2D.

jwk945333d ago

People are thick these days.

longcat5333d ago

If they could make a 3DS version without the 3D for $129 or so, then they could seriously move some units in the future.

Naming it would be a problem though

axisofweevils5333d ago

Trouble is, it looks like some upcoming games (Super Mario 3D Land) use the 3D effect to solve puzzles.

longcat5333d ago (Edited 5333d ago )

^^^^

I remember reading somewhere that nintendo was not allowing any game to be published that could not be played in 2D....hence making my suggestion a real possibility

Was not aware that they changed their minds

Thecraft19895333d ago

axisofweevils they can't do that some people are unable to see the 3d effect due to sight problems or even blindness in one eye.

hard joe5333d ago

may be they could name it 2DS?
with built in dual sticks hopefully

Cablephish5332d ago

They could call it Nintendo 3DS-1D?

Just thinking outloud, and I know it'll never happen, hehe.

ronin4life5332d ago

They don't need to. All games can be played without 3d. Some don't/won't have 3d at all anyway.

I know people who are in MY age group (18-21) that didn't even know the 3DS was a new console, and not just another DS revisions, so I'm willing to bet money that there are people that aren't aware of such a simple thing.

What the hell is the point of 3DS??

This just proves that 3DS is a gimmick version of DS.

colonel1795333d ago (Edited 5333d ago )

I think the big mistake is that they went with the DS brand for the 3DS. They certainly did to have backwards compatibility, but that has proven confusing for the consumers since they think is just another iteration of the DS.

The point of the 3DS is the 3D, but since that has somewhat backlashed for them, they are in a pretty tough situation. The 3DS will not be a failure, but I don't think it will be as successful as the DS was.

What they should have done is a completely different machine. Backwards compatibility is not that important. Fanboys made it important for the PS3, because they needed something to hate on Sony, but if one stops to analyze, how many people actually use it?

A different design would have allowed them to do something more innovative, at least have more room for improvement. Also, the 2 screens in the 3DS, since they are different size, and one has 3D and the other doesn't, they can't even be used at the same time for movies or gameplay as the DS did, so now it's more restrictive.

Another thing against them is the prohibition to use 3D for ages 7 and less. I think that that is the majority of their market with the DS. So what is the point for a 6 or 7 year old to get a 3DS if he can't enjoy the 3D?

Anon19745333d ago (Edited 5333d ago )

Are you kidding? Have you seen any 3DS games? There's no comparison between the 3DS and the DS. Just look at Resident Evil on the DS versus the 3DS and tell me the 3DS is just a "gimmick" version of the DS.

Edit above: Nintendo issued that warning just to be safe because some doctor at some point said it may be an issue...maybe. It was a cover your ass move. The American Optometric Association said it was fine for kids. "The American Optometric Association says children with "normally developing" vision will suffer no ill effects from using the Nintendo 3DS and that the device might actually be beneficial in the early detection of sight difficulties."

Sobari5333d ago (Edited 5333d ago )

You have 1 bubble for a reason.

SonyNGP5333d ago

You're right, Finger. Who needs a 3DS when you've got a 3DS?

Now if you'll excuse me, I have an Ocarina of Time to play on my D- WHY DOESN'T THE CARTRIDGE FIT IN THE SLOT!?

ReservoirDog3165333d ago

I think he meant the 3ds is a gimmick version of what the true DS successor should've been.

If he didn't mean that then that's what I'd say it is.

There's a lot of confusion about the 3DS.
The fact that the 3D is optional could sell it to people who don't like 3D.

Perhaps this is what the rumor about the "less focus on 3D" really meant.

jozzah5333d ago

I couldn't care in the slightest about the 3D, just want more games.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer55d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot55d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno55d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay55d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno53d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK54d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
