Remembering the N64: Super Mario 64

Ryan M. of iNintendo.net writes, "The introduction of 3D environments and 64 bit consoles turned the mid-90s into a decade of transitional flux for the video game industry. Developers unsure of how to fully utilize these new advances in gaming opted for 2.5-D style games akin to Crash Bandicoot. While many of these titles certainly were not lacking in the quality department, the third-dimension was simply being used to enhance graphical models and backgrounds. As a result, critics and even some designers began to question whether or not this so-called revolutionary 3D gaming was nothing more than a gimmick that failed to enhance the gameplay quality from anything other than a visual standpoint. When June 23 of 1996 rolled around, all eyes were on two products: Nintendo's newest console, the Nintendo 64, and its launch game: Super Mario 64."

RoboSpiff? who are you? never heard of ya

Moduserous5355d ago

Loved this game. Questionable butt stomp...

EazyC5355d ago

I always wondered how bruised Marios ass was back then while playing this gem of a game.

LarVanian5355d ago

Will always be a perfect 10/10 in my books.

EazyC5355d ago (Edited 5355d ago )

Yeah, one of the few for me.

I think Goldeneye is a 10/10 job, too. N64 kicked ass!

bacano5355d ago

Absolutely.

You can understand this only if you consider the context. 1996, the first game where you could move in 3d... I remember how I was in front of a TV screen on some retail, looking the demonstration videos for more than an hour.

Mario 64 was the future (and it was fun).

Solidus187-SCMilk5354d ago (Edited 5354d ago )

Its true, this is one of my favorite games ever. I first saw a demo unit and was amazed to see mario climb a freaken tree in 3d. Then I got one shortly after it came out adn the only choices of games were mario 64 or pilot wings 64, the choice was obvious.

I remember being addicted to this game and had to play it all the time. I would get home from school and play N64 all day until I got all 120 stars.

This game made 3d gaming the norm. Game series like banjo kazooie, crash bandicoot, gex 3d, crock, Spyro, OoT, JFJ, DK64 etc all were after mario 64 and were judged by the standard of awesomness that mario 64 set. It made 3d gaming popular and i think it is still one of the best 3d platformers to ever be created.

I remember being amazed by all the things mario could do. All kinds of jumping, climbing, crawling, and karate moves. He could even do a leg sweep and a flying karate kick like lu Kang(pressing Z+B), and it was awesome.

And I liked to catch that monkey and throw him off the cliff.

Tanir5355d ago

was the first mario game i hated and ended the most awesome games ive played. I only enjoyed the previous mario games, for me mario 64 ruined the series and made mario annoying.

ofcourse im the minority and my opinion doesn't count since everyone loves this mario, but just stating my opinion

3GenGames5355d ago

I think it was a great jump to 3D for him, it worked perfectly. I don't see why you would hate it. If you hate that, you must hate all other Mario games in 3D because the formula hasn't changed much.

Although one thing that is nut in this game is the camera, but oh well. We deal with it.

Tanir5355d ago

thats exactly correct 3gengames

i disliked sunshine and galaxy 1 and 2, tho galaxy 2 wasnt bad, just didn't like it as much as the old ones. oddly enough i enjoyed the F out of New Super mario bros.

i think my prob with the new games are they are WAY too easy. and his voice.....dear....goodness haha

maniacmayhem5354d ago (Edited 5354d ago )

@Tanir

I'm with you, i didn't like Mario 64. Sure it was great to move in 3D and all but there was a certain magic lost when it went to 3D. Especially coming off the masterpiece that was Super Mario World. And it was way too easy. I remember beating the game in a couple of hours if that.

Pretty much why i enjoyed the New Super Mario Bros. on DS. classic 2D platforming is what mario is about.

ignorantsonsof_5354d ago (Edited 5354d ago )

Could you post valid reasons for your dislike of it? Also they were made easier so more people could get into the series, while keeping the later stars pretty challenging. And come on older games (NES and SNES) were made hard as hell because if you weren't dying constantly you would finish the game really fast. Now things are "hard" in a more complex way but still seem easier than those games because they aren't crushingly difficult.
Edit: @maniacmayhem it's possible to go through the old games really fast too you know. Speed runs should have shown you that.

maniacmayhem5353d ago

True, but i didnt do a speed run through the old games and i didnt do it for the N64 version.

So i dont see your point.

god i love the n64, first system i ever got and its still one of the best to this day. it was before the age of dlc........my what a magnificant age gaming was in the mid to late 90s.

laaakokaracha5354d ago

yes and how bad it turned out to be nowadays with all the hate going on...

rfowler305354d ago

yeah the n64 hasnt aged well in all honesty compared to the graphics these days but i still love it.

ignorantsonsof_5354d ago

If you can't go backwards in graphics i'm sorry but you sound like you've been spoiled as they progress. You shouldn't change how you felt about older games just because new ones look amazing.

Interview: How Mario 64's Princess Peach Helped Bring Animal Crossing To The West

By her own admission, Leslie Swan isn't a very good self-promoter, but she needn't worry as her credits do a great job of getting across her credentials for her.

Super Mario 64 DS, a Twenty Year Reunion

WTMG's Leo Faria: "Super Mario 64 DS may not have been “better” than Super Mario 64, but it is indeed “more” than Super Mario 64, if that makes any sense. For a kid back in 2004, having a Nintendo 64 classic on the palm of your hand, with more content than the original, and a crapton of amazing minigames on the side, was more than enough to make me ignore the admittedly terrible controls I had to put up with. Two decades later, it bizarrely holds up. I can easily affirm it’s one of my favorite remakes of all time, even if it’s far from perfect… hell, possibly not even better than the game it was supposed to be an improvement of."

Super Mario Odyssey Turns Seven - Ranking the 3D Mario Games

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "With the Switch getting on in years and the prospect of a new Nintendo console growing closer, now seems like an excellent time to take a look back at one of its mascot’s two big evolutionary lines, particularly since we now find ourselves in the longest wait ever between 3D Mario games. Today marks the seven year anniversary for the release of Super Mario Odyssey, and with no full new entry in sight, it comfortably beats the roughly six year wait between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, which should also be good news to anybody who broke a mirror that day.

3D Mario has delighted fans since 1996, maintaining an astonishing level of quality and bringing innovations not just to the 3D platformer genre, but gaming as a whole. Needless to say, it’s a hard task to rank a series where every entry is beloved, but I shall nevertheless undertake this risky venture with my head held high. Wish me luck."

One of the worst marios.. i hated the fact it was only about finding the moons and very repetitive with the same bosses. There is no exploration in this one.
Galaxy 2 is still unmatched

TiredGamer572d ago

I played, completed, and enjoyed Mario Odyssey, but I tend to agree that I don't think it's the best 3D Mario. There was sense of sameness that prevailed after the first couple of worlds... not in the levels, environments, or aesthetics, but in the routine of each world. It just felt like each new environment was just the beginning of another checklist of moons to acquire, and the sheer number of them took away the sense of accomplishment I got from the stars in Mario 64 and the like. I can't exactly put my finger on why that is. Galaxy gets my nod as the best one.

Cacabunga571d ago

I enjoyed it too but i won’t even place it in my top10 mario games.. as you said you are just looking for stars and that irritating music everytime you find one.
Also the bosses are pretty much the same from begging to end. I would have have like some koopalings instead of these dumb useless rabbits

Chocoburger572d ago

I played a little of this game and freakin' LOVED it! But I forced myself to stop because I hadn't played Galaxy 2, which I've been playing every day for the past week. Cripes, Galaxy 2 is way better than I expected it to be! Even though I dislike the Wiimote and nunchuck controls, and it annoyed me a lot with Galaxy 1, part 2 just feels better and slightly less gimmicky when it comes to the controls.

Profchaos572d ago

Sunshine at number 7 no way. I get it's not perfect but it deserves better to date there has not been another 3d Mario that's managed to capture that same movement it's the most acrobatic feeling Mario to date.

It's by and large better than 3d land/world and I'd argue that galaxy 2 didn't offer any trie innovation it was essentially a DLC pack to 1

Personally it's
1) Mario 64
2) Mario Sunshine
3) Mario galaxy
4) Mario Odyssey
5) galaxy 2
6) Bowser fury
7) 3d land/ world.
