Playstation 4: Defining Requirements

"It has been a rollercoaster ride for Sony's Playstation 3 this generation, from the critical launch period, the successful implementation of new exclusive franchises such as Uncharted, the High Definition War victory thanks to Blu--Ray, market share loss to Nintendo & Microsoft and of course the hacking debacle to the Playstation Network which pushed many fans of the system to the limit in terms of patience. However PS3 still manages to offer something for everyone and whilst it can be said they cannot claim to have had the same sort of success as it's predecessor, the Japanesed based company still has a respectable hold in the home console market and will continue to do so especially now given the recent price drop to coincide with upcoming exclusive titles such as the very promising Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception from the award winning and very talented developer Naughty Dog that will be released in time for the holiday season."

PS4 badly needs a decent controller

gogospeedracer5350d ago

Controller? I like the controller just fine. I would be happy if they keep it.
I don't like the Move though (or any motion controls).

Sony needs to hit on these factors:

Ease of programming.
MEMORY (don't do what you did with the PS3). PSN needs a huge boost!
Total-System-Interface revamp should accompany the PS4.

NoobGamer5350d ago

I totally love the controller the way it is, we don't need a boomer-rang or something crazy of that sort

Dark_king5350d ago

Well the controller could use a slight size increase.Just basically put a bit more room between the analogs half inch to a inch would be perfect.

ShoryukenII5349d ago

All the controller needs is to fix the R2 and L2 (like on PS2). It makes it hard to hold them down. Thank god for crouch on toggle. :)

Other than that, the controller is perfectly fine. I love it and for some reason 360 fans hate it (even though they can't play fighting games with theirs). The size is fine. Just because I can get used to something doesn't mean I have "girl" hands (like the 360 users like to say). It just means I'm better than you. :)

RyuCloudStrife5350d ago

controller? what? the controller is fine

CynicalVision5350d ago

Badly? They've been using the same basic design since the days of the PS1, obviously they're doing something right.

Ares905350d ago

did you think the same thing when PS2 was going to launch?

TheFirstClassic5350d ago (Edited 5350d ago )

You know, a lot of people perfer the dualshock design over other controllers, so I don't think sony should change their controller just for you. Don't think that the whole world shares your opinion. I will say that they may want to make two models, for those who dislike the size.

Oldman1005350d ago

I agree, as good as the dualshock design is, there's always room for improvement.

eraursls845349d ago

I love the dualshock, they need to keep it. They could have an alternative controller (not 3rd party) but keep the dualshock.

The games will be there, Sony seems to be acquiring 2 to 3 studios a generation. So we can say that's well taken care off, now as for the rest lets just say...

The Vita already points to the changes being made and it shows.

Features:
-Cross Game Voice Chat
-Region Free
-Multiple Accounts
-Custom Soundtracks
-Multitasking
-Friends Network (Sort of like Home)
-Non-Gaming Apps like Calendar and a Clock
-Message and Invite notification pop-up plus LED blinks blue
-Some Games will share DLC (i.e. Street Fighter X Tekken)
http://www.gamespot.com/vit...

Due to this http://www.vg247.com/2011/0...

Is why... http://www.develop-online.n... The ps4 will turnout to be a more desirable platform than the ps3 could it ever hope to be. This i am sure will put pressure on the others as i believe the service will continue to be free of charge, but only better in every aspect.

CynicalVision5350d ago (Edited 5350d ago )

Cross-Game Chat seems to be almost certain at this point, considering how the Vita will have it.

Why would you want a calender on a console? Actually scratch that, it could be a good idea...imagine a calender that also highlighted upcoming events like game releases or updates.

supremacy5350d ago (Edited 5350d ago )

Well the thing i feel most is, how people tend overlook how hard Sony tries at times to please its user-base.

I mean when the ps3 launched, it was a different staff in power, they had a different vision. Therefore things were different then.

However since then, its become clear that Sony wants to be more integrated with their user-base. Things like home, the tester, PlayStation blog, share among other things have pretty much helped them become more aware of whats required of them.

The Vita is a platform that i like to use as an example simply because if you look at it, one can tell that a lot of thought went into its development. Certain people like to downplay it and pretend is nothing but a psp with better graphics while overlooking at the fact that this device is in many ways an answer to many of the criticism Sony took with the psp. Not only that but this platform has been pretty much designed by the devs based on what we know... http://www.develop-online.n...

And judging by the reception its getting, i am willing to bet the same formula will be use for the next PlayStation home console in 2013.

It will be more powerful, cheaper to build and efficient where it needs to be. One thing you wont hear from devs is how difficult the ps4 is to develop for that's for sure.

Dark_king5350d ago

An Clan battles, practices that your Clan leader can set for whole clan. Also would be great to tell when PS+ sub runs out hate counting the days.

CynicalVision5350d ago

I wish people would stop using that concept picture, it's horrible.

fluffydelusions5350d ago

Looks like something out of 2001 A Space Odyssey.

EazyC5350d ago

"Uhm... Sony, we have a problem".

It's the same deal with concepts of cars. They are just rediculous. I know the purpose of these things is just to take elements of design for the real thing but they rarely actually do.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8520d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele20d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk20d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay20d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10120d ago (Edited 20d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit20d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg19d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10119d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14920d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle33d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit33d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog33d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog33d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad33d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_33d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage33d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda33d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
