Resistance 3 Review (GameXplain)

GameXplain.com writes, "Insomniac has been one of my favorite developers since the days of Spyro the Dragon. The developer can seem to do no wrong and are always bustling with fun ideas and great gameplay. They proved it with Spyro, they proved it again with Ratchet & Clank, and they proved it with a vengeance with the original Resistance. Resistance 2, however, felt like a misstep to me. The game wasn’t bad, not even close, but it felt like it went through an identity crisis. Gone was the ability to hold every weapon, instead only carrying two at a time, which just seemed counterintuitive when you have such creative gun designs. Rechargeable health also became the norm and suddenly Resistance 2 was every other shooter out on the market. Good, but certainly not a standout. With the release of Resistance 3, Insomniac seems to have learned their lesson and intend to bring the series back to its roots."

Sad that the multiplayer was reduced...

SoapShoes5356d ago (Edited 5356d ago )

Uh why? Uncharted 2 has the same size mp and it's fine and so are a lot of PS3 games. While 60 was fun it was just too chaotic because it seemed like the maps weren't designed for it. Plus the huge multiplayer was Resistance's gimmick so to speak, but after MAG came out having a 60 player count didn't really stand out.

HeavenlySnipes5356d ago

that the change doesn't affect the fact that the MP is still hella fun. BUT R2's 60 person Mp DID work well. The maps were HUGE, so spawn camping in TDM was not possible and although some idiots would run into a 50 person skirmish in a open field, there'd be 10 sensible people flanking to get around and chuck grenades at the enemies back. The game was great online. All I want from R3 si to have DLC that supports at least 20 people (and be bigger for the war game mode)

SoapShoes5356d ago (Edited 5356d ago )

@SNESPS1PS2PS3: You act like I'm the only one who enjoyed it and most of that just seems exaggerated and it is off-topic. I was solely commenting on the player count. Who cares how many there are as long as it is good? 60 player games in R2 weren't that great anyway(not saying they were bad, just not great) and it's no longer a stand out feature with MAG vastly upping the player count by nearly 200 players.

All resistance games were good fun.

Resistance 2 co-op was nice.

Resistance 1 story was nice.

Resistance 3 story and mp is nice.

Also imo, the weapons feel alot better in R3.

Resistance 3 is a Classic, 13 Years On

Insomniac Games' thunderous conclusion to its acclaimed first-person shooter series remains an under-appreciated work of art.

Sony needs to remake the trilogy on ps5

CrimsonWing69558d ago

I’d rather them do a new game in the world of Resistance.

Cacabunga558d ago (Edited 558d ago )

I honestly liked the first one most..
killzone 2 and 3 outshined Resistance 2 and 3 for me in every aspect.

Eonjay558d ago

I absolutely adored Resistance 3 but they do not NEED to remake this game. They should do something that they enjoy and if it is Resistance then so be it.

Mr_cheese558d ago

Loved resistance 3, played the whole thing on co op with the move controller and gun, was very different!

Resistance 2 online was the best

gamerz558d ago

Me too, but also on a 3D tv! R3 was one of the few games that got plastic rifle panning motion right.

isarai558d ago

Such a criminally underrated series, id love a remaster collection of the trilogy.

preciousdeath558d ago

Yes! ...and make them PSVR2 compatible.

Pedrof558d ago

Not a classic in my opinion ; a pretty mediocre PS3 shooter as far as I'm concerned, not bad, not the worst of the trilogy, but certainly not great. Killzone 2 was miles ahead of it (and of most FPSs even today as far as I'm concerned).

pwnmaster3000558d ago

Naw man.
Resistance 1 will always be GOATed for me.
I remember playing all night on multiplayer. Such a fun game.

P_Bomb558d ago

Ah yeah, R1! I cut my teeth on the one-shot Walmart map, lol! Miss that.

gamerz558d ago

Played that demo soooooo many damn times since it was the only thing to play for a while at launch. That and motorstorm.

refocusedman558d ago

killzone was amazing but resistance was great as well. althpugh theybwrre both fps, I think that served different purposes.

JEECE558d ago

Thanks for turning Insomniac into a Marvel studio.

ApocalypseShadow558d ago (Edited 558d ago )

Although I agree on original games and creativity over licensed IP, especially something like Ghost of Tsushima. But Sony's looking at that series selling less and less overall with the 3rd estimated to not even sell 2 million. Gamers who say they loved it didn't really buy it.

While Spiderman the series has sold over 50 million not counting PC. And Spider-Man 2 is over 11 million so far. If you had their business and had to make their decisions, what would you do in their shoes?

JEECE558d ago

@ApocalypseShadow

Umm, that's exactly my point lol. Insomniac made great, original IP games and people didn't buy them because they were too busy lapping up yearly CODs and Assassin's Creeds, so naturally Sony/Insomniac had to pivot to something else.

Knushwood Butt558d ago

So you are saying 1 was the worst?
I respect your opinion but strongly disagree.

I'll start with what I didn't like about 3:
- OK, Nathan Hale is gone but new player character totally forgettable. Can't even remember their name.
- Awful forced in 3D. Just look at KZ3 for 3D done well.
- Online multiplayer that paled in comparison to 1 and 2. Put hundreds of hours into the first two. Probably less than 10 hours into 3.
- Campaign was OK but I played the other two more, especially 1.

Pedrof557d ago

1 had my favorite gunplay of the trilogy (no need for COD iron sight) so I guess my worst would be 2. At least 3 wrapped up the storyline, supported the move controller and had prettier graphics. But in my book, none of the three really stood out. From that era, I prefered Singularity for example and obviously Killzone 2.

I wish they'd bring back the Resistance 2 multiplayer. God that co-op was so much fun.

Resistance 3 is such a great game. One of my all time bests.

cooperdnizzle1425d ago

Couldn’t agree more. Still love It as a shooter to this day.

Just something about that game. I really wish they would just do a remaster, don’t even need a remake just bring it up to todays out put, touch up a few things if any, and I am there to buy it day one.

Of course I would love a remake built from the ground up. As long as they treated it like Shadow of the Colossus, or close to those type of remake. Wouldn’t want it to get the RE treatment…. Just because the game is already paced so perfect and hits all the right beats that I wouldn’t touch that aspect.

My take:

Single player
3, 2, 1

Multiplayer
3, 1, 2

Overall
3, 2, 1

I beat the lengthy single player in 1 multiple times and spent hours in the online too. Plus 1 featured my home town! Special mention to the audio design in 1: playing that with surround headphones blew me away.

Note: I have the platinum for Resistance 2.

Eidolon1481d ago

Resistance 1 MP will always be my favorite. Call it nostalgia or whatever, but that was my jam, felt more balance, natural.

Miraak82 1481d ago

i have the platinium too , 10k kills in online ranked matches was no joke . Took me 3-4 months straight grinding but it was fun . To put it in perspective you only got like 25 kills per match if you were 1st place every match that's at Least 400 matches in 1st

Sciurus_vulgaris1482d ago

I only played the 3 main Resistance titles. My ranking would be;
1. Resistance 3
2. Resistance: Fall of Man
3. Resistance 2

GoodGuy091482d ago

Man I loved 3's campaign. Another gem stuck on the ps3 and who knows if insomniac will go back to the franchise.

fr0sty1481d ago

Resistance, Warhawk, MAG, Motorstorm, there's so many first party gems on PS3 that Sony has just left to die...

P_Bomb1482d ago

Never played Burning Skies but I still have Retribution.

monkey6021482d ago

Burning Skies was about 3 hours long and rather inconsequential. You haven't missed anything

porkChop1481d ago

Honestly, Burning Skies was shit. There's no two ways about it. At first I thought it looked terrible, then I second guessed myself. Big mistake.

darthv721481d ago

Retribution has this really cool feature where you could use a PS3 to link a controller to it and play. So if you had a 2000 or 3000 hooked to a tv, you can use a real controller. All of this predates the PSP Go's ability to sync a sixaxis to it via bluetooth.

Yui_Suzumiya1481d ago

Resistance 3 was shocking and brilliant. Loved it.
