PC Gaming vs. Console: An Infographic

"The so-called "death" of PC gaming remains one of the most widely cited myths, thanks to the proliferation of bad marketers whose interest rests in the popularity of videogame consoles. This myth and misconception remains a part of the public consciousness despite arguments to the contrary."

The first one is a little self explanatory with a move to fully digital content with PC being the major platform for free to play games which produce big profits so increasing revenue. The ghz is a little obvious with a standard laptop being nearing 2ghz. Times have changed for 2005. I think to make a statement that many will leave the PS3 for PC isn't supported by the evidence because the evidence ignores PC in every house and having Facebook games taking off. But does this mean people leave the PS3 for PC gaming? No. They play both. I can't remember the figures but a lot of people play facebook games at work

limewax5374d ago

I would agree that at least most people who play PC also play at least 1 form of console. And I don't think gamers are leaving for PC, but PC is growing for sure, I took a look and just yesterday and Steam peaked at very near 4 million users.

dangert125374d ago

@Iamnsuperman
I liked your comment cos I agreed with most of it but were you said Its console gamers don't leave the Ps3 for PC I kind of disagree though I agree with the statement made fully In its context

I left xbox because It seemed Irrelevant when I got my Ps3 not many exclusive games on the xbox that i liked paying for online id rather not etc
so i think it depends on which console cos I would of defo of left my xbox back then for pc gaming if i realised how good it is back then

the only reason i havent left the Ps3 completely is because of its exclusives which makes sense lol but xbox just ain't very attractive I think alot of consoles gamers on 360 would give up playing on 360 if they got a good pc rig and gave it a fair shot

MaxXAttaxX5374d ago (Edited 5373d ago )

They excluded RROD from the failure rates?
____

Anyway, people have their reasons as to why they would choose to play on consoles:

A lot of people don't have PCs that outperform current consoles, believe it or not.
A lot of people don't have their PCs hooked up to their living room and/or entertainment center (whether it's to avoid a lot of clutter or for not hogging the only screen in the house or room).
Everyone shares an equal experience and A LOT of people find the overall convenience and ease of use, interface, community and exclusive games highly enjoyable.

Most current multiplatform games don't display huge PS2->PS3 type leaps in graphics yet between consoles and PCs. Aside from resolution, AA and frames, the overall image is fairly similar, which is good enough for most people. And in the end, all versions play the same (same game, same gameplay, same story, etc).

And there's nothing wrong with that.

Anon19745373d ago

Well said, Nathan. I just went on a huge rant in another thread, wondering why this gen, a section of the PC gaming popular appears so insecure that they need to remind us at every turn how great PC gaming is whenever console gaming comes up. It never used to be that way. I never ragged on the N64 players because GoldenEye wasn't Counterstrike or Unreal.

Everyone knows that a mid-high end PC has game, but it's all about ease of use, and for many the graphical leap between consoles and PC's these days just isn't enough to warrant gaming on a PC.

And yet here we are, subjected every other day it seems to news articles that feel the need to remind us how great PC gaming is, or PC fans who can't help themselves but run their mouths whenever a multiplatform game comes out on consoles and PC's. There's seriously a complex there that just didn't exist prior to this gen.

Clock speed has not been an indicator of processor performance for many years now. Especially now that we are in multi-core and multi-threaded processors...

GTRrocker5374d ago (Edited 5374d ago )

PC may have better graphics, but it is too much of a pain in the ass to deal with. I would rather just have a console. Plus I like my exclusives. Plus that is a lie saying gaming PC's cost the same or cheaper than a console. Unless you build it yourself you are going to pay thousands. Not everyone knows how, or wants to deal with building a computer. Those that do probably already play PC games. Those that don't probably have money or play consoles.

limewax5374d ago

I disagreed, but only because of how you say PC is a pain, it hasn't been a pain for years now, Pretty much everything auto updates itself and patches itself now, and the few kinks you may come across are fixable by anybody who knows how to use google, and It's normally going to take 5-10 mins to sort it out for somebody who doesn't really know what they're doing.

It's very easy to be a PC gamer actually

iamnsuperman5374d ago (Edited 5374d ago )

I think he means to build and understand. I understand basic stuff when searching for a computer (speed and RAM and memory) but when it comes to cores and graphic and sound cards its a whole different ball game. I do not have the money or no how to put down money on a new gaming computer. I would love one just to play ARMA3. Consoles are the easier option. You put a maximum of £400 and that is usually it. My experience of computers is performance slowly dies. I will always be a console gamer first mainly due to its ease but its exclusive games and a controller as its main option. I can play games with a keyboard and mouse for RTS games but thats it really

limewax5374d ago

I would agree its not easy getting your head round the parts, to be honest I had help building mine since I had no idea about motherboards whatsoever.

But one thing I will say, and something I find particularly odd actually, is although performance does seem to die slowly, it only seems to be the OS, the games seem to be consistently performing (unless you get a bad driver or something)

I couldn't say if this is the same or not with a solid state drive but I would imagine the effect is at least lessened

FlameBaitGod5374d ago (Edited 5374d ago )

People here on n4g that talk bad about pc gaming are the ones that don't have gaming rigs. I use to say the same thing, talk bad about em, about how m&k sucked, how pricey it was, then I got one and it became my preferred gaming platform and i notice it cost me almost nothing to have one

wsoutlaw875373d ago

thats just not true. My pc will play most games on max bet the only game i play on it is shogun 2, and im looking at getting the witcher (dont have an xbox). And guess what, im even getting bf3 on... the ps3. Consoles are for gamers who play games. they have a game specific controller, os, network, and store. They have fully supported accessories and GAMES. Games are made for youre hardware so you get great looking games with out frame rate problems. Ill say it again because its simple as this, consoles are for people who want to play games. PCs are for work and kids who think there top of the line pc gives them some type of bragging rights and try to make a big deal about small graphical differences.

FlameBaitGod5373d ago

dude gaming began on PC, when where you born ? when the first ps console came out or something? You forgot PC has accesories or something ? PC has xfire you know ? that you can talk to anyone you want, even if thir playing diff games, watching movies, browsing the web and etc.

Small graphical differences LOL ? can the ps3 or 360 run at resolutions over 1980x1020 with anisotropic filtering 8x, antialisasing x32, texture filtering, triple buffering at the same time ?

Lol plz, small differences. Gaming began on pc, anyone who denies that is freaking blind. PC had the first online game and the first social network for gamers.

wsoutlaw875373d ago

who cares where gaming began. Dont try making a point about where gaming began when it has nothing to do with whats better now. You act like a pc is something totally different than a console, there both computers. You wanna talk about gaming then lets talk about what has the more games and exclusives. ya wow theres differences 6 years in to a generation! And like i said small differences. The pc uses a controller made for secretaries. Yes pc has accessories, no Sh**, can you read, I said fully supported accessories. PC doesn't even have a dedicated gaming os or a global fully supported network. I cant wait for next gen to start to stop these stupid discussions with little pc gamers that think they're smart. If you want to be a gamer get a gaming console and play some games.

superrey195373d ago

@wsoutlaw

I'm sorry but no, pc has way more exclusives than consoles. Console games simply have more marketing whereas a lot of pc games don't.

"pc uses a controller made for secretaries." Seriously? fps's started and thrived because of the mouse and keyboard. Lets not forget the other genres that console exclusive gamers can't enjoy such as mmos, rts's, etc because of the limitations of a gamepad.

"no dedicated gaming os...network"
It's an open platform, no dedicated gaming os needed, and steam says hi.

wait for next gen? You just listed a drawback of consoles. Get a pc and you're already there lol. Seriously, I love my ps3 because it genuinely has great exclusives that I can't get on pc, but vice versa the pc has exclusives I can't get on consoles. multiplats simply look better on pc as well.

FlameBaitGod5372d ago (Edited 5372d ago )

Ty superrey19, didn't want to waste more time on him.

When I saw this

"You wanna talk about gaming then lets talk about what has the more games and exclusives"

I just felt bad for the guy, to be that bad inform and still post.

http://www.portatech.com/ customize the pc the way you want it yeah the parts are a bit more expensive to choose from but theres other barebone sites that can let you customize the computer they build it and ship it to you. the graphic cards are a bit on the low end also but heck like i said there is other websites that let you customize a pc and they build it.

http://www.giantbomb.com/xb...

pc games that are compatible with 360 controller.

death2smoochie5374d ago (Edited 5374d ago )

"Additionally, the infographic points toward the processing power of the AVERAGE PC, allowing PC games much higher peaks in terms of performance, and visual quality, with very little sacrifice...."

Oh man...saying that on N4G.COM and that will cause a MAJOR poop storm.
The onslaught of the you know who's will be coming to say this is all ONE BIG EVIL LIE....

@GTRrocker

"Plus that is a lie saying gaming PC's cost the same or cheaper than a console. Unless you build it yourself you are going to pay thousands."

You can buy pre built systems for $700-$1000 that are faster than these consoles. That is not thousands.

http://pc.ncix.com/ncixpc/n...

http://www.ibuypower.com/St...

http://www.ibuypower.com/St...

It's SOOO scary that people still beleive the myth that PC gaming is so expensive and PC's to run games costs THOUSANDS.
That is so far from the truth it's almost comical when I hear people saying this.
If you want to spend thousands on a PC rig, then that is your choice, but you can spend $800 and get a machine that will run 90% of your games at near maximum levels and also perform many other non gaming functions that consoles can never do.
Don't believe the myth that PC gaming rigs costs thousands.

And in the short term, PC's ARE cheaper than consoles...
When you factor in the same very PC game costs anywhere from $5-$20 less than the console version, that ads up.
I won't even mention the fire sales STEAM is always having where you can buy some AAA games for $10 all the while the same version of that game for the consoles still retail for $59.

DLC is normally free...
Mods are almost always free...and it adds YEARS to that PC game you bought.
If you buy 10 games a year you already saved a bundle not even including free DLC that console owners almost always have to pay for.
Those same 10 games you bought on your console makes the price of that system more than a $800 gaming rig

thebudgetgamer5374d ago

the problem is not saying it, the problem comes when people feel the need to state it over and over.

ninjahunter5374d ago

Nice post, I would just like to point out future mark has a much better system builder and you could probably get a rig that performs roughly the same for only $500. It also shows compatibility between parts and such.

wsoutlaw875373d ago

gaming on a pc is more expensive and youre lying if you say it isn't. a ps3 is 250$ and greatly out preforms a pc of similar specs. you can try to pretend that you can get console graphics on a pc for close to the same price but were at the end of the generation, like what happens every generation. next gen will come out at like 500 in 1-2 years and match or out preform pcs. Plus try buying a pc for 400-500 and having it play all the best games for 8 years with great graphics and frame rate and not having to upgrade once. PC gamers get like this at the end of every generation.

Saladfax5373d ago

I have 152 games on steam. I'd bet everything that I've got that someone with a PS3 and 25 games at full price has spent more than I have.

Oh, what if you own multiple consoles and still pay $40-60 on average?

No. Building a decent PC is not necessarily cheaper, in the beginning, but by God you'll spend so much less on games that the cost doesn't even compare anymore.

Laika5374d ago

wow. that whole chart was so incredibly biased and deceptive

ninjahunter5374d ago

Lol, Care to shine some light? Everything on that chart is true. Or perhaps you would like to chime in a counter statement...

Laika5374d ago (Edited 5374d ago )

ok, how about that to try and show that pc games sell more, they pick starcraft 2 vs ncaa 11. games that are a year old. so they try to pick one of pc better games to prove a point. i could do that too by picking cod or halo and saying "see console gaming is better and this proves it"
so really that whole point is useless. it proves nothing really

ninjahunter5374d ago

If you picked the game as a multiplat like Halflife 2, Crysis 2, mass effect or Deus ex HR the pc versions probably outsold in 4/4 of those games(sorry i have no numbers for you).

the top pc has 4 games that outsold the top selling console game of all time (blops 360).

Laika5374d ago

what are those 4 games?
and if that was the case why not mention those games and not ncaa?

wsoutlaw875373d ago

@ ninjahunter "If you picked the game as a multiplat like Halflife 2, Crysis 2, mass effect or Deus ex HR the pc versions probably outsold in 4/4 of those games(sorry i have no numbers for you)". thats just complete BS

"The 360 accounts for 57% of Crysis 2's sales, with the PS3 taking 29% and the PC raking in a miserable 14%. Maybe they were too busy torrenting it or something." - distructoid

vg charts crysis 2 world wide (Million):
pc - .30
ps3 - .72
360 - .97

deus ex:
pc - .17
ps3 - .38
360 - .56

Youre so smart ninja hunter...

Pandamobile5373d ago

Your numbers fail to include digital sales.

Bladesfist5373d ago

Why disagree with panda, your numbers do not show digital sales as digital sales are not reported...

superrey195373d ago

Exactly, digital sales on pc r never counted. Which is a big deal since the majority of pc sales are digital and not retail boxed copies.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio36d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing36d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9236d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit36d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing36d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9236d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
