35 Million Active Gamers on Steam; Valve hints at an Improved Source Engine

GB : Valve has just revealed that they have over 35 million active customers on Steam. If you remember they said there were approximately 30 million last year. So it’s definitely a good bump for them in one year. Steam also hit 4 million concurrent users online this month.

And still growing...

It's easy to understand why EA is releasing Origin and why EA wants BF3 to be an exclusive of their service.

dangert125362d ago

Thing Is EA's Origin does not touch STEAM
STEAM had a sale on Mirrors Edge yesterday And It was cheaper then buying It from Origins when it was on sale lol thats weird funny but shows how far vavle are willing to go to beat off contenders

disturbing_flame5362d ago (Edited 5362d ago )

Well, thank you captain obvious. ;)

I'm just saying that when you see the architecture and the success of Steam, you understand why EA has decided to elaborate its own platform with specific content, a securized distribution with very attractive exclusives. It's the same business model but EA has still a lot to learn from Steam.
35 millions users, and potentially a lot more. Still growing.

Origin is just an experiment. They are using battlefield 3 to push it.

Can't match Steam though.

dangert125362d ago

But the thing with steam is vavle kind of befriend the consumer EA are just business 1st and it can be off putting even sony do a good befriending 'act' imo microsoft ea activision or ubisoft don't seem too in a sense of joining a service run by them no ubisoft steam has a great headstart atm in the public eye

"STEAM had a sale on Mirrors Edge yesterday And It was cheaper then buying It from Origins when it was on sale"

Was the same price for me.
$5 from steam or $5 from Origin.

Only EA game I've seen for cheaper on Steam is BC2.

Kee5362d ago

Ha, I got an email from EA saying:

"Your EA account is now an origin account- download Origin here."

No, thanks

Series_IIa5362d ago

Why is everyone shouting Steam?

Saladfax5362d ago

@disturbing

It's just like how every other MMO saw the success of WoW and said, "Hey, *we* could be making that umpteen billion!"

You're definitely right about EAs motives, and everyone else is correct about how well it stacks up against Steam. Right now the only other digital download place that seems to be worth using is GoG, since they have a specific niche.

BattleAxe5361d ago

I just so happen to one of those 35 Million :)

Pikajew5362d ago

I got my friend to download Steam so he can get Portal for free.

news4geeks5362d ago (Edited 5362d ago )

How about letting us remove games we no longer want to own, valve, seeing as your raking the money in.

kcuthbertson5361d ago

Why would you want to do that? That's absolutely pointless..

rfowler305362d ago (Edited 5362d ago )

congrats to steam, steam has come a long way since half-life 2, who knew it would be as succesful as it is today.

I would buy a machine that is set up to how Kirito and Asuna play games in Sword Art Online

Inverno1944d ago

The world of Sword Art is something I don't think any developer right now will ever bother attempting to create. I've seen .Hack too and the games both those anime show is something I wish someone would make. A real life simulation presented in a medieval fantasy-esque aesthetic would make me quit real life in a heart beat lol

Double_O_Revan1944d ago

Software might be really buggy though...

Profchaos1944d ago

Maybe and maybe the flying car bug was really just a prediction of flying car software failure.

ScootaKuH1944d ago

If reality moves at 3 frames per second that is 😉

Kabaneri1944d ago

That sounds cool but imagine the social consequences some people would get really attached to that alternate reality.

Lore1944d ago

Dwight in Second Life comes to mind

Extermin8or3_1944d ago

Automate farming systems abd have computers feed us through tubes and live theblife you want.... lol wait what if the Matrix Is real? :?o :p

AFKghost1944d ago

I really dont give a flying monkey doodoo about all this futurism bs. Its really just sad, old timers on their way out desperately trying to stay relevant when they should have been making good games for the last 20 years.
