Syndicate Reboot - Times have changed? We beg to differ

DSOGaming writes: "So what is next? Fifa 13 as a FPS? Command & Conquer as a point-n-click adventure game? Splinter Cell as a tennis game? Or Skyrim as a platform game? But who cares as they will all pay homage to their original versions - featuring the same universe, some details and the same name. Hooray!"

If they are inventive and creative who knows it could be a good game.... but to be honest, they should have done a much updated version of what the game was before, it would be something different from everything else that is out at the moment and could have found a niche... then they could have gone all FPS as a spin off!

indeed, when looking at SR3 you can see how imaginative developers can be and what that will mean for the games they'll be putting out.

Syndicate was one of the best totally politically inappropriate games that did what it set out to and so well it grew to legendary status. As with many other games that pay homage to an ancient title, Starbreeze could do worse by that legend in making the game more appropriate for modern audiences by making it an FPS. They could have made a DL game exactly like the old one, much improved, selling it for $15 and having viewpoint, camera, and difficulties with controls (trying to use Kinect for voice commands for example).

It makes more sense to appeal to modern audience who own consoles and play with controllers and who are unfamiliar with an isometric view this generation (there were a few for Xbox, and still too few on XBLA) to have a squad based game in first person (like Mass Effect in a Mercenaries like game world), with a clearly defined mission structure, and story, that you can tackle however you like with as inappropriate tactics and load-out as you like.

Playing Syndicated by pointing and clicking would be inappropriate while these days you drive your characters and command semi-intelligent cohorts if not switching to them and taking over in a pinch.

You have some good points, but if they remade it more in tune with old game they wouldn't have to do it in the same type of way...

You would not have it as a point and click game, nor would you have it in the same top down view from the original... but an updated modern version

Like as a very rough example, imagine a 3rd person view more like GTA, and you running along with your 3 squad mates following in intelligent formations. You could give orders to your squad mates (maybe a bit like in Freedom Fighters from last gen which is one of the few games that squad commands actually worked fairly well on).

That would have been the best way to go for Syndicate I think as it would have kept the feel of the game intact but modernised it a lot!

But all we can do is see how the FPS version works out! I will just wait and see when the time comes if it works.

Trying to represent an interactive simulation of cyberpunk world, say an active city with working vehicles, is harder to do than a FPS, would run the risk of not selling as well, so they're doing a FPS. Its as simple and obvious as that.

I just know when I think of a Syndicate remake, it would involve a research tree. Certain people you could "recruit" to make into special operatives.

lzim5370d ago

crazy part is that 'hardware limitations' aside, SR3 has those cyber punk vehicles. Just need the augmentations and even more over the top weapons. Even the recruitment part was address early in that series with your homies. They'd just need to have more gangs (syndicates) fighting all the time.

Are people really this obsessed with the fps genre this generation.

It is like you can't even continue a game in it's original genre because the only thing people know how to play anymore are things in the first person perspective.

I'm disappointed that this generation of gaming had to be dumb down for new gamers that think every game should be call of duty.

lzim5370d ago

FPS just means it's more hands on gives you a new perspective to play from and appreciate the mayhem. Split second planning and tactics might be harder to manage if you're driving your characters (and hopefully armored and weaponized vehicles) into the fray. But that slows down game play compared to pointing and clicking. Slowing down game play so it can be appreciated in modern glory isn't a bad thing.

again the question, how far can you go in adapting an isometric camera game (mostly so you get a bigger view of the map) to modern AAA graphics norms (including controlling the camera like in Syndicate Wars, getting an agents FPS perspective (probably for QTE and puzzles) and zooming in and out for a better perspective unlike Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light that allows more stuff on screen but still lets you get in there for certain parts, like Dungeon Siege III) while having it still be engaging to shooter fans and respectful to the old game? It really would work but would be a hard sell at full price even if everything in the game world was made of confetti and everything was rigged to explode.

They'd need a crap load of missions (and DLC), weapons, augmentations and online play for starters. And probably sandbox modes which would be like reverse Tower Defense. But it by no means needs to be dumbed down from Bullfrogs version or hyperfalutin like Deus Ex:HR or XCom.

But 'technical limitations' might still hold back just upgrading the game to modern consoles for XBLA and PSN, all the explosions weapons and character movement and tactics we'd expect to see in a modern version of the game might be too much for consoles.

Syndicate Reboot Servers to Close

Electronic Arts has announced a number of server closures in the coming months, including Apex Mobile and the 2012 Syndicate reboot.

MadLad1160d ago

What online functionality did Shadows of the Damned even have?

kevco331160d ago

My thoughts exactly! Some kind of score chart I've forgotten about?

coolbeans1160d ago

Syndicate's big saving grace will soon be erased for good. I'll give *some* credit to EA in keeping servers up for 10+ years.

mastershredder1160d ago

Oh yeah, an actual cyberpunk game. I have fond memories of the old bullfrog Syndicates.

IamTylerDurden11159d ago

Syndicate was a fun and high quality late PS3 fps that got swallowed in the sea of fps at the time. It was short and it didn't innovate but it had good visuals and fun combat. Starbreeze i believe. Rip Torn and Rosario Dawson.

Syndicate - 10 Years with no Reboot Reboot

10 years since the Syndicate series was rebooted as an FPS, perhaps it's time we got another reboot as a strategy game?

ABizzel11514d ago

I enjoyed this game, especially the co-op. It was solid sleeper hit IMO.

MeteorPanda1514d ago

was this the game with the cars on rails and you could blow up killing everyone in it? l loved this game, lol

porkChop1514d ago

I couldn't get past the first half hour or something. Hard to remember but I didn't play long. I don't know if there was something wrong with the PC version or not, but the bloom was so bad it hurt my eyes. I started getting a horrible headache. I could hardly see anything because there was extremely intense bloom everywhere.

annoyedgamer1514d ago

EA always let their PC versions fall by the wayside. The same thing happened with Dead Space 1.

Gheritt_White1513d ago

This remains one of my fave hard sci-fi FPS games from the X360 era. A compelling premise with an interesting setting and solid characters, plus outstanding special ability mechanics. Def deserves more love.

Dirt on the lens (and JJ Abrahms style overuse of lens flare) is the worst, especially in war games like Battlefield. We're not supposed to be a camera! Way to ruin the illusion of actually being the player we're controlling.

PrimeVinister1792d ago

Yeah, that's a bad one that is missing from the list

FPS_D3TH1792d ago

Most soldiers today wear goggles or tactical glasses so dirt on the lens isn’t that much of a stretch tbh

isarai1792d ago

Vignettes, chromatic aberration, and that annoying thing where they blur the corners of the screen. Also film grain.

FPS_D3TH1792d ago

All those immediately get turned off when I load up my settings haha. Unless I’m going for screenshots it’s more than annoying

PrimeVinister1792d ago

You are mostly stuck with whatever terrible effects on console. There are some options like motion blur that can switched off but it's not common

PrimeVinister1792d ago

Depth of field is annoying. Along with most camera or lens effects.

But DoF will be cool in the future when they can track what you are looking at and apply DoF accordingly.

DeviateFish1792d ago

Don't forget camera shake and "realistic" camera movement in cutscenes.

porkChop1792d ago

The Syndicate reboot had the absolute worst bloom I've ever seen. It literally hurt my eyes and gave me a headache just from playing. I could never finish it.

PrimeVinister1792d ago

Absolutely. Beyond the distraction and obstruction, it looked unpleasant a lot of the time.
