Graphically, Can The Wii Compete?

Do graphics really matter? Is sheer processing power the be-all and end-all of console gaming? Can the Wii compete with PS3 and Xbox 360? Is the Wii really just two GameCubes duct-taped together?

All very good questions (well, except maybe the duct-tape one.) But seriously, can such an underpowered system like the Wii compete with the big boys? Evidence obviously points to the fact that it is. It's a fact that the Wii cannot generate some of the graphical feats its competitors can, but with the right developer on board the Wii still has the capabilities to give you that "wow" factor. It's all to do with a little thing called artistic design.

Graphically? Obviously the numbers of the hardware perfomance state to a big "Hell NO!".

However, art direction can make a game look good without needing all that power. Look at Okami. WOW, what a breathtakingly beautiful game. Look at the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Look at the Super Mario Galaxy. The games look great! Not because it uses a supercomputer, but because of the art direction/implementation.

Edit - No I did not read the article. The opening line kinda states the main question I would assume.
Of course, the Wii fails miserably when trying to imitate real life games such as Call of Duty compared to the other two systems.

The question is - WHEN IS THE NEXT "Wii" COMING OUT WITH REAL HORSEPOWER SO WE CAN HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS?

Great points. Okami is a perfect example, as is WW. Every puff of smoke in WW was interesting and stylistically pleasing.

wii is asking to be killed.

Nice, productive reply. :D There's always someone around here that wows me with their eloquence.

But does it need to?

1.1- well said. Have a bubble.

1.3- the irony, of course, is that you're doing the very same thing!

Not even close.

I'm not hating on the Wii but most Gamecube games look better than Wii games.

Developers need to focus on graphics as well as the "revolutionary" motion controls.

As it is now the Wii is on fire and all of the games (with the exception of 2 or 3) look like early GC games because they sell regardless of how good they look.

ELite_Ghost6756d ago

that's just a way to say the wii can do ps2 graphics

ItsDubC6757d ago (Edited 6757d ago )

Did anyone above me actually read the article?

The Wii will never push as many polygons as the PS3 or 360, but proper art design has the ability to make graphical horsepower a moot point.

MK_Red6757d ago

True but only if 360 and PS3 games lack art design and of all advantages of games like BioShock, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted and Mass Effect, superb art design stands out.

Sure, Wii games can have superb art design but what if PS3/360 games have superb art design AND superb technical graphics which they already have? Heavenly Sword, BioShock and Ratchet PS3 are already considered true works of art in visual design and not just polygons or textures.

Kholinar6757d ago

Depends on your goals.

If realism is the goal, then I doubt the wii can match things.

If pure art/design is the goal, then yeah, it's all in the hands of the developer to be creative and produce something fresh and stylistically interesting.

I, personally, have found realism to be a boring art concept since I graduated ninth grade art class. Especially with computers it would seem like we could move forward to something new instead of copying the lowest common denominator of the film industry.

MK_Red6757d ago

Kholinar, a game can have both. Pure art and realistic look. Just try BioShock or Heavenly Sword.
Also, not every stunning next-gen game should be realistic. Look at Ratchet & Clank PS3, Viva Pinata, Kameo. They look good technically and have outstanding visual and artsy look.

Kholinar6757d ago

"Also, not every stunning next-gen game should be realistic. Look at Ratchet & Clank PS3, Viva Pinata, Kameo. They look good technically and have outstanding visual and artsy look."

Exactly. Though R&C is going down the route of making cartoons look realistic. I think it's sad, for example, that every american animation house is going to CGI only. Look at the masterworks created by Miyazaki. Look at Watership Down or some of the older disney films. The route we're going is not the end-all, be-all. It just happens to be the easiest route, because you can rely on tech to innovate for you.

but they dont have to, they are already the success story of this generation. theres more important things than graphics, although that all people seem to talk about anymore.... "look at those shoe lace textures".... *sigh*

Rooftrellen6757d ago

What's really sad is that many of these people are PS3 owners, who were loyal to Sony from the PS2 era. This while the PS2 was the weakest of the consoles last gen.

The Xbox and now 360 are graphical powerhouses, though. If someone stuck 2 gens with just the 360, I'll give them the shoelace textures.

Sony loyalists (not just fans, but the people who take pleasure in the fact that the consoles of others are melting) are the annoying ones with it, though, since they seem faily clueless as to how powerful their old console was.

Also, just to add, the most powerful console has NEVER won, and the least poweful normally wins (though I believe the only exception to that may have been the SNES/Genesis era).

mazirjones6757d ago

you're forgetting the dreamcast man

KeiZka6756d ago

Wasn't Dreamcast kind "TEH GAMING MACHINE" of that generation? It sure as hell was better than N64 graphically and way better than PS storage-wise..

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle17d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg22d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree22d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai22d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
