Do You Do the Midnight Launch?

GR's Scott Ryan writes:

"As a self-described “hardcore” gamer and an advocate of geek culture, the midnight launch of video games have always been something that I took an interest in, and they are events that I will almost always take part in. Back in what can only be called “drinking days” my friends and I would throw on clothes, cologne, and pick up our wallets for a night of what we could only hope was drunk and ridiculous, but things change and so do interests."

I will be attending as many as I can. I like them and you can meet new people; those people that only come out once a year to pick up their annually sports, racing and/or shooter game etc. Midnights are where the best MP games start and sometimes there are tournaments and stuff. Can't wait for Gears!!!!

I also like to get my game 10 hours before the store opens for the normal work day.

The one and only midnight launch i have ever done was for MW2, and that was only because i had a half day of lectures in collage that day. I prefer picking up the day its out. 1) dont have to wait in a long ass line 2) have a proper nights sleep

kreate5394d ago

im on goozex ready to click the button for the trade to be on my request que. than go out to grab some tacos and look at all the ppl waiting in line out in the bitter cold.

some launches though. u just wait in ur car cuz there isnt too much ppl.

kneon5394d ago

I can't be bothered to stand in line waiting for anything, I've got better things to do.

I just order most games online and by 11am I've got the game. But a few times they have even arrived the day before release.

PRHB HYBRiiD5394d ago

Nope. To me it is stupid. I just go to bed and the post brings it to me day 1. The only time I am waiting for something at midnight is a drink at the bar. Not outside a game shop

B1663r5394d ago

It is rare that I get a game day one anymore... For me it is more like... "Oh hey I have some extra money and want to get a game... What just came out?"

Although I will probably almost certainly get Skyrim that first week it is out.

But hanging around outside a game store at midnight to get my greedy little fingers on a game??? Um, No.

OC_MurphysLaw5394d ago

I stopped doing the midnight launches when I realized I could have been the father to most the gamers in line. Sobering moment for sure... Plus, with Amazon now doing release date delivery I am more than happy to give my business to them and have it delivered to my door. I have done 10+ games that way now and only had an issue once and Amazon was very quick to correct things. Couple that with their gift card pre-order offerings and not having to put any money down to pre-order...Amazon kills it.

DaReapa5394d ago

Lol. My sentiments exactly. One of the last midnight launches I did was GTA4. And considering how disappointed I was with that game, that pretty much ended my midnight launch crusade.

DaTruth5394d ago

Once with GTA4, but I just came home and fell asleep during the ridiculous install!

No more!

I just asked this question today. They do midnight launches here in Canada, but they never really do events or anything. Is that predominantly a US thing? For example, I see Gears 3 events in the US, but I don't see any in Canada, and I didn't see any when I looked out of curiosity in cities like London.

I think it might be largely a US thing. Now as fro midnight launches in general, I've never done a midnight launch, and never would.

kreate5394d ago (Edited 5394d ago )

midnight launches actually started in japan.
later america picked up the trend.

it got so bad in japan sometimes that the gov't had to step in and regulate when certain games can be released or else ur looking at a workday with no employees working.

in america. i know the gamestop next to my house orders pizza and drinks for everyone who made their pre-orders waiting patiently for the launch of the final fantasy 13.

but the thing that really help boost the trend of midnight release was due to halo 3 for the xbox360. that night was ridiculous in america.

bumnut5394d ago

Totally agree, A friend of mine queued for MW2 for hours then went straight to bed when he got home! wtf!

Just realized I'll be attending 4 more mid-night launches this year. Already went to last weeks for Space Marine. I'm gonna be awake might as well make it a gaming night. :]

Ser5394d ago

Yup, whenever possible. Saves me the trip for the next day, plus I can sneak in a little gameplay that night.

Neo Nugget5394d ago

I just waddle into Walmart after my 11:30 work shift and wait around the store a bit so they can sell it to me.

Other than that, not really.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle52d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Why the Wii is Such a Nostalgic System in 2026

The Wii is now a retro console. Let’s get nostalgic about an often maligned system.

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg58d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree57d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai57d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde59d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy59d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

DivineHand12559d ago (Edited 59d ago )

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
