Assassin's Creed 3: Where will Ubisoft take us next?

OXM UK: "The forthcoming Assassin's Creed: Revelations is the last set in Renaissance Italy, bidding a fond farewell to grizzled pretty-boy Ezio Auditore and his spectral forebear Altair. Where will Assassin's Creed 3 raise the flag? Here are some ideas..."

I'm expecting a massive change-up from AC3. Brotherhood was great and Revelations looks excellent, but there's no denying the series has settled into a rut, both in terms of premise and gameplay.

That is what a yearly release and only trying to get the multiplayer of the ground does to a game. They have a good team but I agree it is in a rut gameplay wise but I still buy it only because of the story and I want to know what is going to happen. I think the AC3 will go French revolution with Desmond going somewhere in America (that is what the hints are hinting at but who knows it could be anything). Even though I would love a Medieval Europe searching for the holy grail (seems fitting) there has been little indication for this

jony_dols5370d ago (Edited 5370d ago )

The French Revolution isn't that much of a drastic change from Renaissance Italy. I'd prefer for it to be set before & during World War 1.

Maybe they should set it up so that Franz Ferdinand was actually a Templar, and the player is tasked with assassinating him and from there you progress to killing Templars (The Russian Tsar ect.) across war-torn Europe.

And maybe they should leave it 2 or 3 years till the next generation of consoles are released, to take advantage of the new hardware and not wear the series thin.

@Jony_Dols "And maybe they should leave it 2 or 3 years till the next generation of consoles are released, to take advantage of the new hardware and not wear the series thin".

That would be great but I think they are going to end the series in 2012 like the game story does. Which I admit I would like them to spend at least two years making it

Fez5370d ago (Edited 5370d ago )

Cool idea jony_dols. Definitely think they have to give some more time in between games.

I can't wait for a fully fledged Desmond game too. Modern day assassinations would have loads of possibilities.

omi25p5370d ago (Edited 5370d ago )

I think a cool story twist at the end of Assassins creed 3 would be desmond dies and at the end of the credits someone is getting out of the animus having just been look through desmonds memorys and then the next game could be set really far ahead in the future

jony_dols5370d ago

@omi25p:

So Enzo & Altair are just memories within a memory.

Sounds quite Inception-esque!

If they stick to yearly releases I don't think they can really change much. Even look at how many studios are working on Revelations, but even then there's only so much progress and change you can make in 12 months. To be honest the only time I expect there to be any big changes in Assassins Creed is (if the series continues that long) by the time we reach the next generation of consoles, when Ubi can really develop the AI of NPCs and enemies and whatnot and everything else they're looking to improve.

If they do what they did between AC and ACII and take at minimum a 2 year gap then maybe they can change things up even more, but think about it, 2 years after the release of Revelations will be the end of 2013, and I think most people think that by then we'll either have, or have decent knowledge of the existance and near release of, the next Xbox and Playstation consoles, or at least one of them (and I doubt Sony are going to want to release their next console so late after MS release theirs like what happened with the PS3-Xbox360, and vice-versa). In other words I'm not really sure what I expect. I will assume that Ubisoft will continue their strategy of yearly releases, the question is if the next game will be ACIII or if we'll get more games like Brotherhood and Revelations.

As for the location of ACIII, honestly I haven't a clue. I think pretty much no-one expected Contstantinople to be the setting for the next game after Brotherhood so it's hard to predict ACIII. I would like something like St. Petersburg or somewhere in Russia but since the AC comics are set there I doubt that will happen. French Revolution seems to be what most people expect after the hint at the end of AC:B but it just seems a little too obvious a hint to me from Ubi for some reason. Depends as well if it will be a new ancestor or a mainly Desmond-only game (which I highly doubt since they will need to forward the story quite a bit compared to how slow it has progressed in 3 games) since if it's a Desmond-only game then chances are that it'd be focused on the temples away from modern-day trends (such as guns and whatnot) unless they want to turn the series into a generic shooter which I doubt would ever happen.

Tl;dr since I didn't expect this continue this long, I haven't a clue where it'll be set, depends on whether we're getting a new ancestor for ACIII or whether we're focusing on Desmond from here.

Into the depths of spin off hell.

dorron5370d ago

They should stop with AC for this gen. Let it rest and then bring it back on next gen.

AC has been milked way too much in home consoles, portables, smartphones,...

DanSolo5370d ago (Edited 5370d ago )

I think Assassin's Creed is one of those franchises that could go on and on and still remain really good and fresh if handled right.... which would be good as I'd hate to see it turn out to be a game that just gets milked!

There are so many places and historical times that they have the basis for so many stories.
Ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, Persia, Feudal Japan, China, British Empire, French Revolution, America, Mayan, Russian.... it goes on and on.

I think though that as they went into different stories it might help to change the style of gameplay somewhat as well....
Like there are many different types of assassination and intrigue, like you could have a much more stealthy type assassin that sticks to the shadows and hiding places and have a different game mechanic for the player to exploit as shadows and line of sight become more relevant than jumping from rooftops.
Perhaps poisons being used, with things like poisonous snakes being slipped into peoples beds as well as the more obvious poisoning food and drinks or using blow darts. Basically trying to make some assassinations seem like accidents or natural causes than a blade through the head!

Places like the British Empire where you also have the whole social stealth thing upgraded as you have to disguise yourself, and mingle at court ect. Maybe having to do missions where you are in some way connected to people like Horatio Nelson in a similar way as Ezio was connected to Niccolo Machiavelli.

And with the devs penchant for actually teaching history alongside the gameplay.... people might actually learn something too!

Either they finish it up and set in in modern times with Desmond vs Abstergo or I'll forego the series until Ubisoft does so.

When will you decommission this new one? I’m only asking so I can be happier by not buying it at full price.

bunt-custardly1360d ago

The dog Chorizo from FAR CRY 6 has wheelchair legs, so is hardly a decommissioned pet. In fact very useful for digging up dirt.

Historic Eras that Video Games Need to Explore

Xfire writes "Worldbuilding is a crucial part of any story. It's not an easy task to create a believable setting with its own set of rules, customs, traditions and political affiliations and then weave a story into the said setting. Luckily, storytellers and video game writers don't always need to create complex settings when we've got history books as thick as Big Chungus.

Historical eras make a fabulous setting for video games. They've already got the world-building nailed, complete with their own set of rules, customs, traditions and political affiliations. Honestly, I don't think I need to justify the fact that historical eras make an amazing setting for video games. If you don't believe me, just go ahead and play the Ghost of Tsushima or any of the Assassin's Creed games."

The first crusade would be pretty sweet. I’d probably enjoy any of those on your list if they were done respectfully. Like not some dork in Portland making a Russian Revolution game.

Benin Empire, Far East, Central America. Games are pretty biased toward Europe, North America, and the Middle East. There is a very big world out there.
