Does Microsoft Even Need to Build a Better Xbox?

Apparently, big game producers are quite happy with the plateau console development has hit, and big names in the industry like Frank Gibeau, of EA said there’s not any kind of urgency for Microsoft or Sony to develop a new gaming system. His exact words were “It’s hard for me to conceive what you would do on a PlayStation 4. The displays are already 1080p, you’re already connected to the Internet. … You could make it faster, you could have more polys and you could up the graphics a little bit … but at what cost?”

Actually they do that's why I sold mine.

rabidpancakeburglar5364d ago (Edited 5364d ago )

That article is over 2 years old and from before the 250gb slim release so I hardly think that the failure rate is anywhere near as high now. They do need to eliminate the RROD almost completely though.

guitarded775364d ago (Edited 5364d ago )

@rabidpancakeburglar
Bubs for calling them out... We all know the 360 had massive failure rates before the Jasper chip set, since then the system has been very reliable. I own a Jasper Pro model and a slim and have had no issues with either. If it's a question of overall hardware, I'm quite happy with my 2 XBOXs and 2 PS3s still... an announcement of new hardware wouldn't bother me as long as they aren't coming out until at least 2013 and both systems are under $400 and both systems are backward compatible (360, PS3) with full online support for the previous generation games and motion controllers.

Bull5hifT5364d ago Show
TheXgamerLive5364d ago (Edited 5364d ago )

Any type of failure rate is less than 3%,less than. And, less than the ps3. The ps3 has a higher failure rate than the Xbox 360 now.
in fact, the 12 months or 2 plus years ago when they upgraded the old xbox, the rate dropped to approx. 6%.
So, any rrods now would be original units or well made up stories like a couple i've already read on here.

check it ya selfs.

@xgamer We believe you /s

new console wont = more games
this gen can go on for atleast 3 years
slightly better graphics isnt enough to make a new console

BlmThug5363d ago

Ive had my Xbox 360 Pro model for over 2 years and never any problem

WrAiTh Sp3cTr35363d ago

It has cross-game chat and Gears 3 looks better than UC3, so no...no they don't.

Lazy_Sunday5364d ago (Edited 5364d ago )

Oh, and while you're at it, stop making people pay for XBL.

There you have it, a better console.
You didn't even know you had it in you Microsoft!
Sometimes MS, I wonder--what's going on in that mind of yours? I mean, no self-respecting corporation spews that much shit out of their mouth just to troll. Especially since they're definitely smart enough to know better. Right?

... /sarcasm...

andrewsqual5364d ago

Why didnt you say this 2 years ago Microdick when the only machine you had on the market was a overheating piece of shit?

jc485735364d ago

well, I think they need more games. I feel like I keep coming back to the same games over and over again. I just wish I could have a little bit more of the other genres.

Parasyte5363d ago

I'll agree with you on that. It feels like the only games that the 360 has are FPS games and Kinect.

Maddens Raiders5363d ago

Hell no, the 360 is future proof just like DVD.

Chaostar5364d ago

They have been constantly improving the hardware ever since it launched. It has gone from unreliable, noisy, bulky and wifi-less to slim, reliable and quieter with built in wireless N.

I'm sure there's always room for another revision say... a slot loaded blu-ray drive that doesn't eat disks if you knock your console? Or, even better, compatibility with non-proprietary HDDs.

I agree that it's still too early to jump into completely new hardware but it doesn't mean they should stop improving the one we have.

gamingdroid5364d ago

As long as MS are adding features and not removing them, I'm cool with that.

ThanatosDMC5363d ago

Yeah, I want them to get rid of the crappy disk tray. Damn thing damaged my beloved Dead Rising 1.

Peaceful_Jelly5364d ago (Edited 5364d ago )

Xbox needs blu-ray so third party devs stop gimping games and then offering the leftovers as DLC a day after of its release. Then I wouldn't mind sharing FFvsXIII even though I know Square's gonna gimp it anyway to make it multiplat... =/

NukaCola5364d ago

The Xbox LIVE interface is more than fine, but the hardware needs a major tune up. They need a quit tray-less disc drive with something more than a DVD. DVDs are too small and it's holding back the industry. The PC can do it cause of its full installing process, but with 360 MS's charge out the ass when there are more than 3 discs and as a console they are really restrictive of HDD space. I think that both systems(Xbox3,PS4) need at least a TB of HDD right of the bat.

5364d ago
qwertyz5364d ago (Edited 5364d ago )

lol BOTH sony and MS need new consoles even a 2005 DUAL gpu high end pc is more powerful than ps3/360 lol the 512 mb ram both consoles use has been outdated since 2004!

the ps3 version will be better because it comes on one disk, has better sound quality and also comes with a free game but both will look the same according to dice. This is the same thing they said about bad company 2 and they where right in fact the 360 version actually did some things better than the ps3 counterpart.

the only reason no 360 gameplay has been shown is because EA has a marketing partnership with sony just like activison has with MS.

the pc version of battlefield 3 will make all console games look like ps2 games in comparison anyways oh I forgot

metro 2033
witcher 2
shogun 2
gta iv with mods
crysis 1(even without mods)
crysis warhead
crysis 2(even without mods or directx 11 patch or high res texture pack)

already make all your console games look last gen when maxed out :/

even a 2006 SINGLE gpu high end pc is between 5-7 times more powerful than ps3/360 LOL pathetic

most multiplatform games taht have come out on pc over the last few years look better than uncharted 3, gears 3, forza 4 and all your other console games.

metro 2033 is less than 10gb yet makes all your console games including the best looking ones like crysis 2,RAGE,uncharted 3, gears 3 etc look like ps2 games how do you explain that ?

crysis 1 is also about 12 gb yet makes all your console games look like ps2 games including the 40gb killzone 3 how do you explain that ? it even looks MUCH better than any console game at medium settings with 8xaa 16xaf @1080p

bulletstorm is only about 6gb yet looks better than ANYTHING on consoles how do you explain that ?

firstly most of the blu ray space is used to store high quality sound and 1080p cutscenes. killzone 3 for example is 40gb total and only 9gb out of that 40 is game data the rest of the space is taken up by CUTSCENES

secondly and most importantly storage media only HOLD the game it is RAM, memory bandwidth and processing power(both cpu and gpu) that drive the game and both consoles are equally crappy in this department.

MS is lying by the way AMD has been working on the nextbox gpu since 2009 MS gave them about $200-250 million contract to develop a brand new gpgpu architecture for the nextbox I do know the new GCN architecture(vector + scalar) that will power high end hd7000gpus thats are set to launch late this year are based on the gpgpu architecture being developed for nextbox . if you don't know what GCN is check the link below

http://www.anandtech.com/sh...

How do I know this ? because I work at AMD but I don't know anything about what it will be capable of as I'm not anyone particularly important nor am I on the development team or even know where they are developing the chip. MS didn't want VLIW because its not suited for GPGPU tasks such as AI and other traditionally cpu workloads and aside from this its terribly inefficient so the dropped the money for a new architecture to be designed

MS does need new FIRST PARTY studios because haardare is NO good if there are few first party studios with the talent required to produce high quality exclusives the only such studios MS has are 343i and turn 10 while sony has about 16

by the way "Raven_Nomad" is a hardcore xbot lol

dark-hollow5364d ago

The xbox 360 is holding the ps3 back,
While if you said the pc (which is YEARS ahead of the ps3 tech) is being gimped by the consoles they start with the names calling and calls you "pc douchebag, elitist, jerk etc."

Can someone please explain this flawed logic to me?

Laika5364d ago

your such a blind pc fanboy. it makes me sad.

cyclonus0075364d ago

So you're saying pc is better? I'm confused.

Ninjamonkey825364d ago

Wish people would stop comparing PC to console.

Console vs Console ok then theres a comparsion but comparing a console to a pc is just stupid tbh. The experence for a start is different.

Even when you play Mutiplatform games ie COD keyboard + mouse vs Joypad = different.

Even if you use the pad on PC version the autoaim is disabled by default. On the console version even with autoaim disabled there is still a slight hint of it for correction on aim.

graphics on a high end 590gtx vs a ps3 or xbox just cant be compared so why do it.

End of the day i play the xbox and ps3 and enjoy them both but i play them for what they are games consoles and if i was to compare and i dont tbh id look at what the other console game looked like.

I play my pc and of late the gameplay has become rather stale ive found myself playing the one game alot and my clan has been waiting for the release of BF3, ive found myself playing my consoles more atm.

But theres no doubt when it comes down to it. PC will always win out when it comes to Graphics can't go comparing there thats just stupid.

Skynetone5364d ago

qwertyz

ill guarantee you your not gaming on a 2006 pc so stop with all your bs

practically every home has a pc do you thing your unique in owning one, and if you thing there all pumping out 1080p 60 fps your delusional, consoles are there to fill a certain market, just like the ds, what the 360/ps3 do very well is bring a pc like experience to everyone

even a gtx 590 on max settings cant keep a constant 60fps on metro 2033

A-Glorious-Dawn5363d ago

Wow, it's beyond funny now, this is ridiculous.

Your life must be one sad, sad state of affairs.
I pity you, man...

Do you even enjoy gaming with an attitude like that?
I game on PC/PS3.. I enjoy them both equally...
What is it that compels you to try and reaffirm the superiority of a computer over console?

I think it's pathetic. Gaming is about the games, you are so lost it's hard for me to comprehend what kind of person is behind your comments..

Why does ms need blu-ray. WHY DOES EVERYBODY THINK BLU-RAY IS THE ONLY POSSIBLE DISC IN EXISTENCE.

_Aarix_5363d ago

Why does ms need blu-ray. Why the hell does everyone think blu-ray is the only disc in existence and ms just cant either use hd dvd ir make their own discs.

madjedi5363d ago (Edited 5363d ago )

Hd dvd discs are not being produced anymore, ms needs a higher capacity disc next gen, br discs are cheap, reliable and have more than enough capacity and will likely have faster read speeds.

It isn't a pro sony thing it's a practicality/common sense thing, but if ms wants to be stupid and try to resurrect hd dvd lol, btw lacking the ability to play br movies next gen is a mistake.

Make their own discs, yeah right ms doesn't make any hardware, they are a software company, not a hardware company.

Yes, lets face it in late 2012 or 2013 these console WILL be outdated. I know they want to hold on for as long as they can but we are hitting the limit.

Wonder what new disc format the new Xbox will be using though as we know they will not stick to DVD9 this time around.

theonlylolking5364d ago (Edited 5364d ago )

The next xbox will use the SED which stands for

S-screw
E-everybody
D-disc

It will have 30gb of space when it is dual layered.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio13d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay15d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn215d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn215d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown15d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay15d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay15d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac14d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger15d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300015d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde15d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde14d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_14d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
