Microsoft Comments on Xbox 720

To see it and the PS4, although I still want to squeeze a couple more years out of the old gals.

Lazy_Sunday5397d ago (Edited 5397d ago )

Because we've started to see major compression between PC gaming capabilities and console gaming capabilities. There is a glass ceiling--DVDs only have 8GB of space, and that limits ALL gaming capacities, since most devs want to stick it all on one disc. Then they want to compress the graphics, reduce the poly-count, etc., etc... The longer we limit content, the more comfy most devs will become with a limit. This is something we don't want to happen. We are reducing resolutions and framerate capacities. Trailers are misleading because the console footage doesn't look half as good as what a commercial might show of PC gameplay.

When we entered 2011 we as gamers have found out how far behind our consoles really are from PC gaming today for virtually the same price. A good gaming rig with a 1TB HDD, 2GB DDR5 GPU, 6GB of DDR3 RAM at 1300MHz, and a 3.1GHz cheapy AMD processor will run you $480 and can be a personal super computer. That's more value than a PS3 or 360 sitting with a 320GB HDD with any accessories, and if you don't understand hardware sp34k, that kind of computer has twenty times better graphics than the 360 or PS3 could dream about, and it's still on the bottom of the high-end pile.

I hope xbox 720 will have Avatar like graphics

RIP xbox 360 (RROD)

Xbox 360 RIP(4th replacement)

I knew it was on it's way out by the sound

guitarded775397d ago

@vsr

Rendering of that quality at gaming speed is impossible at the present. Expect next gen consoles to be more like the current high end in PC's.

Shinuz5397d ago

Oh come on a pc is gonna cost you more than that, where`s your Optical drive, OS (probly win7 64Bit), power supply AND Case?
that`s at least a good 300$ more and don`t forget to add taxes and shipping (if ordered from the net).

Lazy_Sunday5397d ago (Edited 5397d ago )

Yeah, I left out tax... but then you have to tax up the consoles as well which then wouldn't make much a difference.

Screw the damn case, that's for people who need their PCs to actually look good on the outside. I know my PC plays decent under the hood, I don't need no fancy-smanshy case!
I bought an HP desktop with 6GB of 1300MHz DDR3 RAM, a 3.1GHz AMD Phenom processor, including Windows 7 Home Premium, and lets not forget the 1TB HDD. Then I bought my GPU on sale. This was all at Best Buy, believe it or not.

Now I run BFBC2 at 80FPS.

Happily ever after, the end.

The moral of the story? Be a smart shopper :)

SuperLupe5397d ago

Welcome to N4G. The only place on earth where people still talk about RROD.

Sooo 2007.

TitanUp5396d ago

completely agree with you i don't understand the disagrees you got

bozebo5396d ago (Edited 5396d ago )

Super, my 360 RRoD again this June.

I'm not going to shell out for another new one again to avoid the repeated breakages... (I bought my elite after my original died twice, and my elite RRoD for the second time this year).

Only the latest Elite models and the S versions are without the RRoD flaw.

So yeah, the majority of gamers' 360s at the moment will be able to RRoD. How is that 2007? More like 2005-next_gen.

Anyway, back on topic.

There is room for great games on current gen consoles, when talking about hardware capabilities.

The problem is a game wont be able to sell many millions if it doesn't have cutting edge graphics.
So they have to push the systems to the very edge of their capabilities, and also fill out the disk with higher resolution textures - meaning content can suffer (look at GTA 4 and Oblivion compared to their predecessors).

The development costs are so astronomically huge that releasing just one single badly sold game means the studio has no option but to close the doors - they spent millions developing it and have to use the sales revenue to get out of debt.

If the market wasn't so interested in graphics that the consoles can't actually pump out - we would be getting far better games and the consumer base wouldn't be so single minded; there would be a lot more innovation in gaming and a lot more development studios would still be open today.

Next gen will have the exact same problems - but the big budget games might actually be good because there will be enough disk space to put some actual content in and the systems will have enough RAM to broaden the scope of individual environments and increase AI possibilities.

Graphics... they are only one small, minor part of the whole thing. Imagine if the current gen had not existed, there would be hundreds of amazing games running on the PS2, Xbox and GC that havn't existed and never will - creativity is far more important than technology. Anyway, that is probably why Sony and MS are OK with holding out on the next gen for a while, not only is the current gen good enough (though MS keep claiming that Kinect has something to do with it?) but the next generation is going to be EXTREMELY hard on small developers - most of them will simply shut the doors, they can't possibly hire enough staff to produce games to a high enough quality for them to sell enough to cover the costs of development (tens of millions).

Hozi895396d ago

@Shinuz

Here's a $480 machine thats gonna let you play the best games out there in higher quality that Any console.

http://www.newegg.com/Produ...

kreate5396d ago (Edited 5396d ago )

@hozi89 and other pc gamers

hey uh... the super pc at affordable prices is good and all.
but its just not the same experience as the consoles.

i play games mostly on the ps3. some on the 360. and even fewer on the pc.
other than blizzard games and guild wars. i dont play much pc gaming.

mostly i end up downloading movies. anime. tv shows. until my hdd is full than i just go back and pick up the ps3 controller.

its probably the same for pc gamer. they like the pc setting better than a console setting. for the obvious reasons that was stated from the above comments.

but its no reason to hate on each other. not that u are a hater but i mean in general. cuz pc gamers look down on console gaming.

MaxXAttaxX5396d ago

That $480 PC is more expensive than any console currently on the market.
And besides:
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
It looks no better than consoles.
______

[On Topic]

A new generation of consoles is still a bit too soon.

Currently, the gap between consoles and PC isn't as big as the leap between PS2 and PS3.
We need more time and better tech.

EVILDEAD3605396d ago

Doesnt matter what they are saying NOW..come June next year at E3 there WILL be a Xbox 720 announcement. But it will still be a year and a half away at that point. So we are still feasibly 2 years away from 720 and PS4.

This holiday is in the bag..the 360 will do well as Kinect has proven to be a holiday system seller for Micrsoft.

Next holiday will be the last holiday for the 360 before 720 arrives and the 360 will go out with a swan song..Halo 4

At that point Kinect will be reduced in price but the 3rd iteration of software will contend with the launch of Wii-U.

Again, that will be the last holiday Wii-U wil be on the shelf without new haqrdware to compete with it. So of course they arent talking about the future they want people to buy into what's going on right now.

BattleAxe5396d ago

@ Lazy Sunday

Its funny because when I'm playing God of War 3 or Uncharted 2, I don't seem to be able to see this so called "compression" you are referring to. The 360 on the other hand has been compressed to the max, and games like Metro 2033 really showed that. So in short, I wont buy a PS4 for at least another 2 years. I was an early PS3 adopter, so I'm going to wait for a price drop this time around.

SuicideShaun5396d ago

@lazy sunday

Implying buying a prebuilt pc or anything from hp makes you a smart buyer.

Rush5396d ago (Edited 5396d ago )

Yep BattleAxe,

Them corridor platformers really showcase the PS3's power, Sony should release a game called Keyhole shooter next that has Avatar like graphics but compensates for it by only allowing you to see it through a key hole.

andibandit5396d ago

The PS3 still has plenty of power left, developers havent even used it to it's full potential yet.

MaxXAttaxX5396d ago (Edited 5396d ago )

Downplay PS3 games all you want. They're fun and keep the player engaged while looking good and don't have to meet YOUR standards.
Don't be jelly.

Hayabusa 1175396d ago

@Lazy_Sunday

Remember that more content, higher detailed models e.t.c. all require more time to make, and more time = more money, so once the production values of the game rises, so does the cost and time. Games are already getting quite expensive to make as it is. Not sayign we should stagnate or anything but it's probably quite beneficial to stick with current gen a little bit longer.

I'm also sure if they released a console 5 years after the 360 came out it wouldn't be that much of step up in terms of capability anyway. Alot of people would've moaned :/

I say take their time and get it right. I know lots of good games that only come on one disc :)

Lazy_Sunday5396d ago

@Super Lube: One of the reasons I stopped playing 360 for a year and a half was because of RROD. I got--not one, not two--but ten of them from my release model up until about early 2009, where I stopped playing 360. I didn't say anything about RROD, but after the 3rd or 4th RROD I bought a PS3.

@kreate: it definitely is a 'different' experience. The downside is that the community can be quite uncommunicative unless you have a group of friends that you've met or some people you've played with in text chat for a while. Though, it is much more affordable than buying games on console, which is one of the reasons I play PC. And with services like Steam, you can easily buy games at great deals, and check them out on PC.

@Nathan Explosion: please, if you're going to use a comparison video, make sure to get one in HD, not 480p standard def. Also, read the little info section--recording programs like FRAPS do cause a dip in FPS--HOWEVER most games ran at that framerate in that shit video. MW2 runs at about 120+ FPS constant on most any slightly high end GPU versus console which runs at about 59.5-60.1FPS constant ( http://www.youtube.com/watc... Also, in the info section on the video you provided, the games were running regularly at 60FPS or higher. NFS Shift is maxed running at 60FPS, and it runs at 30FPS on mostly medium quality on consoles. L4D1&2 on any low high end GPU will also run at 60+FPS. Oh, and yet we also have Crysis running with the Real Lifesis mod ( http://www.youtube.com/watc...
@Suicide Shawn: Yeah, it's lame, but it was cheap and it runs great.

MaxXAttaxX5396d ago (Edited 5396d ago )

Whether the video is HD or not, I should still be able to see the AMAZING difference between that and consoles. But there wasn't any.
You can talk about frames all you want. It doesn't make much difference to me.

So you can run MW2 @ 120fps and for some reason, I'm just reeeally not impressed.

MaxXAttaxX5395d ago (Edited 5395d ago )

what you call "stuck", I call convenience. Have you ever thought that not everyone is obsessed with graphics?

I can run the same games (+exclusives) that comes out for the system and not give two sh**s about it.
Why would I want to shell out another $480+ to have a PC that's competent when I'm comfortable with what I have already.

BABY-JEDI5396d ago

I was actually hoping to get some news, instead of someone reafirming the obvious. Obviously all console manufacturers/developers are continuing their research & costing analysis.

_BudWiser_5396d ago

I hope we keep on till 2015 or 16. Because like PS2 towards its end, there were games putting out amazing things and also tons more games were still being made, meaning developers were stepping it up. If they make a move too soon, we'll go through another stagnation of innovation...hey that rhymed!!

For anyone to say we had innovation this generation (another rhyme..hehe), just shows they know shit about anything. yeah we had some here and there, but never to the scale of what PS2 did to the gaming industry.

Not a sony fan...just the bud talking!

SilleGamer5396d ago

Considering this generation has been the longest, aren't us gamers entitled to a big step up in visuals.

This generation was a massive leap, next should be too!

JackBNimble5396d ago (Edited 5396d ago )

This gen hasn't been the longest, maybe for the 360 because MS dumped the original xbox after 4 years.

The ps3 will not reach 5 years untill november , and that's just in north america, it will be 5 years in the EU next spring.

SilleGamer5396d ago

@JackBNimble,

It will undoubtedly be the longest generation.

Sony may announce the PS4 at E3 2012 but it seems a lot more likely that the successor to the Xbox 360 will be announced, with Sony following with their own event - like the PS Vita.

subtenko5396d ago

This is the 100th time they've commented about the xbox720...

Agree or Disagree if you Agree

Lite_ratchet5396d ago

Only the blind believes PS4 and the next xbox will come out the same year. the PS3 still has legs. next 360 will be 2012 or 2013. PS4 we wont see until 2015.

andibandit5396d ago

Exactly, the PS3 still has alot of juice left, most games dont even use all the SPU's. Once developers take full advantage and learn to code, we will see some even more amazing games.

kneon5397d ago

He didn't specify a year so there is a very good chance he's right :)

tiffac0085397d ago

MS and Sony will probably wait and see how the Wii U performs before they announce anything.

fluffydelusions5397d ago

Doubt it. They'd rather announce it and steal some of Nintendo's thunder.

tiffac0085397d ago (Edited 5397d ago )

Probably but only if MS or Sony is willing to release their new console on the same year.

There is no point in stealing Ninty's thunder if your going to miss the holiday sales. Unless Ninty screws up.

fluffydelusions5397d ago (Edited 5397d ago )

Yep, e3 2012 new xbox announcement. They've already said it's being worked on.

LOGICWINS5397d ago

If thats true, then current 360 sales will slump since people will just wait for the 720. Which means MS could potentially cut the price of the 360 by a HUGE margin to ensure that anyone even remotely interested in a 360/Kinect will buy it between now and E3.

fluffydelusions5397d ago (Edited 5397d ago )

@LOGICWINS I'm still wondering why they haven't cut the price yet but it's only a matter of time I suppose. I suspect they will cut the product line by $50...Kinect - $99, Xbox 4gb - $150, xbox 250gb - $250

Perjoss5397d ago (Edited 5397d ago )

@LOGICWINS

Another reason for them to keep very quiet about a new console is the fact that the 1 year lead they had over Sony worked out extremely well for them, and the less Sony knows about the date for the new console the better, they really want that 1 year lead again. Combine that lead with a console that does not RRoD and its a very good situation for Microsoft, unless they go bananas and heavily focus on casual / Kinect.

Having said all that its not a good situation for gamers if 1 company takes a clear lead (a company with a clear lead never tries as hard as one that is 'losing' or neck & neck with its rival), healthy competition is what has made current gen so great (imo).

DeeBee5396d ago

@Logicwins

That is precisely the reason they keep quite about when a new console is going to be released. Sure they can allude to the fact that it's in development, but they sure as hell won't say when it's coming. As you said, if they did then current gen sales would die instantly as people would wait for the next generation to be released. Keeping quite they can maintain high sales right up until the next gen is ready to roll out the door.

Unfortunately no, MS has already declined offers to use blu-ray tech. Considering they definitely need a higher capacity storage device, they must have something else up their sleeves...

bebojet5397d ago

I wonder why they can't just make some kind of exclusive deal with Toshida to use HD-DVD since they refuse to use Blue-Ray.

Bladesfist5397d ago

Who would want to use blu-ray, Longer load times for what gain? A good HDD is much better.

ghaleon19805397d ago

No it's not going to be blu-ray. I think Microsoft may be considering significant Cloud integration on this one....

Jdrm035396d ago (Edited 5396d ago )

I agree. It will be Blu Ray. If people haven't noticed, Microsoft pushes the 360 as an "entertainment" console/hub, not just a gaming console.

You can watch netflex, hulu, rent movies, buy movies, use the xbox as a media extender. People, including myself, have the 360 at the center of their media room. You can stream live tv to it via WMC, watch recorded tv, watch ripped movies etc etc and has dvd playback.

Do you really think they are not going to use Blu ray? It would be illogical to think so when looking at there entertainment objective with the 360.

IMO of course.

TheDivine5396d ago

I think ms will use dvds like the pc does. Run the whole game off of a hard drive so the dvd can hold larger amounts and the laser wont wear out. Running games from disk is getting outdated imo. We know AMD said it will be a beast so i cant wait to see it. I love launches because it brings a ton of new ip's although i usually wait to buy consoles until theyre cheaper personally.

Bob5705396d ago

Doubt it. That would mean MS would have to pay royalties to Sony.

I think it would be more likely for them to go to a system like PC. Compressing the files so that they fit on a DVD, then having the user install the game on their hard drive. They would have to have a fairly sizable hard drive though.

Jdrm035396d ago

@bob570

That is a misconception because Sony does not own blu ray. While Sony was a leader in the development of Blu Ray there are actually 9 founder of the Blu Ray Disc format that formed the "Blu Ray Disc Association." The 9 original consists of companies like Samsung, LG, Sony, Hitachi, etc etc.

Today there are nearly 30 companies that sit on the board of this Association and more likely then not Microsoft will be one if they aren't secretly already with their involvement in the Blu Ray codecs.

Jdrm035396d ago (Edited 5396d ago )

Better as in regards to what? Games? maybe but that is all opinion. Hardware? Maybe, but seeing as the ps1 adn ps2 were the weakest consoles in their generations and made Sony ridiculous amounts of money, do you really think they will go for the powerful hardware? What if they return to being the company that takes a half a step forward and goes for the 299 pricing?

No certainty can be offered about the quality of the next xbox/ps/wii since we haven't used them yet alone have concrete information about them haha.

Picnic5397d ago (Edited 5397d ago )

Yes I can see that it makes sense that it will be called Xbox 720. Anyway I've got to be off. I'm going to play the sequel to San Fransisco Rush 2049. It's called San Fransisco Rush 4098. It's a law that people have to double the numbers in their games when they release sequels. Then I might watch that new channel that Channel 4 have launched- it's called Channel 8 of course.
If it is actually called Xbox 720 I will eat my hat. It is incredibly unlikely to be called that. Think what the number 720 is synonmous with- standard level high definition. Xbox 1080 would be a hugely more likely name but it might be a word instead.

dveio34d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing34d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9234d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit34d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing34d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9234d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay36d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn236d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn236d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown36d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay36d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay36d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac35d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger36d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300036d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde36d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde35d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_35d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
