PS3 Price Cut: A Problem for Vita?

PS3 has been seeing an "immediate" sales bump, if you ask retailers, and while the new $249 price point for Sony's console is clearly being welcomed by consumers who may have been on the fence, the MSRP does bring up an important point: PS3 is now exactly the same price as the upcoming PlayStation Vita portable.

I think it's a slight problem, but the Vita will have other bigger problems to worry about.

LOGICWINS5440d ago

What bigger problems does Vita have to worry about?

dark-hollow5440d ago (Edited 5440d ago )

Competition.

@dramscus
For me and hardcore gamers, they will choose the vita hands down.

But there are bigger market than those dedicated gamers.

Dramscus5440d ago (Edited 5440d ago )

Competition?
From what?
The ps3 and xbox?

I know your not talking about mobile divecies and the 3ds.

@dark-hollow

But it's clearly not aimed at those markets.
It makes some forays into them but it is very directly and clearly going for a shooter and hardcore gaming crowd.

Yes it has touch and motion input. Plus the augmented reality stuff (which looks awesome by the way check out that tag real graffiti app!) but sony are clearly aiming for an adult device.

Their not looking for it to be the first choice for people that want to play angry birds, and pokemon.

These were arguments that had weight with the 3ds when it released as it was targeted at a casual crowd but this is very much not aimed at those people. It'll take them if their interested but they are not it's prime target.

donniebaseball5440d ago

3DS that's $80 cheaper and has just come off a likely big holiday with Super Mario and Mario Kart. And then of course there's the iPhone and iPad markets. And iPad 3 is strongly rumored to be launching early next year too.

MaxXAttaxX5440d ago (Edited 5440d ago )

People don't buy phones or tablets TO play games.

They're not competing for the same crowed. These comparisons make little sense.
They're aimed at two different audiences.

- PSV is mainly aimed at gamers.
- Tablets/smartphones are aimed at the web browsing app obsessed casuals.

Just because there are phones that do multiple things, doesn't mean that dedicated devices are dead.

A lot of people still prefer to use their MP3 players for music instead of their phones.
There's a reason why Apple still sells multiple versions of the iPod(Mini,Shuffle,Touch,Classi c).

Couldn't agree more.

No.1 problem: smart phones

5440d ago
5119ent5440d ago

smart phone games don't compare....won't ever

Neko_Mega5440d ago

To bad the only real good gaming smart phone is made by Sony.

Other then that, I see no problems for PSVita.

What Zir0 is pretty much saying is, that smart phones will replace everything (Even PC's).

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5440d ago (Edited 5440d ago )

''And then of course there's the iPhone and iPad markets. And iPad 3 is strongly rumored to be launching early next year too.''

Is iPad a mobile device focused for Gaming? Not to mention it will have a price possibly twice than PS Vita, mostly with Games that won't be near as PS Vita Games, and is a device without buttons for gaming.

Silly gameAr5440d ago (Edited 5440d ago )

Apparently, no matter how cool the Vita is, a home console is going to affect the sales of a handheld and not only that, but mobile devices are going to come out of left field and totally destroy the Vita.

According to the gaming media, the Vita just doesn't stand a chance.

fluffydelusions5440d ago

Vita's specs will already be beat by the time it releases but show me a phone with dual analogs and designed for gaming

Dramscus5440d ago

technically it will be beat by phones and tablets spec wise but thuy are not dedicated gaming devices. The power they have has to continue to support the phone features while running games so no it won't be beat out spec wise by any of them because this will be only running games. The games will have all of the resources to use where as phones and tablets will have only like half to three quarters of the available power and ram.

Plus the phones and tablets will be two to three times as expensive.

Not being negative on your comment just sayin

Ju5440d ago

"Vita's specs will already be beat by the time it releases" By whom? Tegra3? If we are lucky, we'll see that at the time Vita launches in NA and Europe - and when we ignore the fact that it launches in 2011 in Japan.

And even when Tegra3 releases (and IPad3 with a similar tech) - there will be 0 (Zero, Null, Nada, nilch!) content which will use that chip on those devices while Vita will launch with a series of games which will blow all the others out of the water.

Vita is real silicon (seen for example at the GameCom - not some random back room prototype) and I would suspect HW wise Sony could release now. But Sony is in the gaming business long enough to know you cannot launch a new device without SW.

harrisk9545440d ago (Edited 5440d ago )

I disagree... Some in the gaming media are being overly critical, but most are positive and have talked about how it is just a matter of Sony marketing the Vita correctly (something that took them 4 years -- Kevin Butler campaign -- to do with the PS3) and the games available at launch.

So far, Sony has been doing great in building hype among "core" gamers... the questions is will they be able to do that with the general public. They should start advertising it during the holiday season even if it doesn't come out until a few months later. And I don't mean just print ads or TV ads. I mean go on Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, etc. and prepare the retailers with information -- Put up posters and stuff around Best Buy, Game Stop, etc. and train the employees of the retail stores to talk about it. And a good viral marketing campaign.

So, bottom line is that I think that the price point is fine. But, being the same price as the PS3, if they don't market it right, parents are going to compare the 2 and possibly choose the PS3 unless they are informed and hyped.

golsilva5440d ago

so if it was a problem then that would mean laptops should always be cheaper than desktops

dark-hollow5440d ago

The thing is, laptops ARE desktops but portable.
The vita is not a portable ps3.
It's...a vita.

BitbyDeath5440d ago

The vita is not a portable phone either...

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8578d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele78d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk77d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay77d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10178d ago (Edited 78d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit77d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg77d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10177d ago (Edited 77d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14978d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle91d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit91d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog91d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog91d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad91d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_91d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage91d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda91d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
