If I remember correctly the PS3 OS at launch was around 120mb? or something similar, and by the time UC2 arrived it was around 50mb. And I think 360 OS is around 32mb? I don't see why Sony cant keep trimming the fat to add new features. Maybe they said what they said to make Vita look more impressive? or just maybe as its 2011, its never going to come.

The old PS3 had extra ram. Earlier revisions had 512mb xdr ram and 256 ddr3 ram.

It was taken out of the newest ones.

Earlier PS3'S had 256mb nandflash memory for firmwares.

In the slim it's just 16mb.

RSX = 63 max vertices 7800GTX = 45
Texture Cache Per Quad RSX = 96KB 7800GTX = 48

Also does more shader instructions then 7800GTX.

If Sony really wanted they could add Xchat in a fw update .
The problem is that all games on the PS3 uses all avaiable ram memory and if this xchat sucks , lets say 50megas , it means that future games would have minus 50M available .
And it would be too paintful (probably not possible) to make old games compatible with xchat .

So my guess is that Sony finaly resolved to say bye bye to Xchat and keep their games beeing able to continue to do the best possible graphics .

Would not be funy for PS3 users to see like UC2 using 512 ram and them UC3 just using 450 megas (just an exemple).

To make this xchat TO work more or less then they opted just don t do it.

Of course they're full of shit. They just don't want to add it because it's a free feature they'd make nothing off of. I'm sure it's also prolly difficult to add to the current system as well. So of course a company is going to lie about something like that. They don't want people even more pissed. This way they just brush it off and use an easy out by saying the PS3 can't do it. That and most likely it'll be a key feature of the PS4 which will be coming out soon enough.

It can handle Full HD films and Crysis 2, but it can't handle XrossGameChat. Something fishy's going on...

As far as I know X game voice chat is a FREE feature on the PSVITA.
But you might have to pay for PSN Plus if want to transfer gaming save data.

I'd rather Sony invest time in what they have been doing: GAMES. Cross Game Chat is cool, but I love playing all of these exclusives. Why follow Microsoft? They've thrown their install base under the bus.

I don't particularly care for cross game chat. Although new community features including a universal party system or ways to connect Vita and PS3 gamers together would be awesome. I believe they are working alot of requested features and awesome new additions. Sony has already hinted at these (recently leaked vita docs) and has said they are going to bring alot of surprises to get Playstation fans trust after the PSN outage. Regardless the gaming industry is healthy and publishers are pumping out awesome games this gen, so I am happy. New features are only icing on top of the cake.

This is how it is, The Xbox owners never asked for a X gamechat in a first place when the 360 first came out we didn't even know you could even private chat, even that didn't get used that much. But MS knew they had the space to do it. And I'm pretty sure the community didn't ask for anything like talking to you're friends while chatting. It was just somewhat of "random" givin for us. And its certainty something the Xbox Fanboys shouldnt insult the PS3 owners about. And its also something that PS3 fanboys, shouldn't of never denied they they wanted it in the first place.

Sony wouldn't tease us for that long, and then troll us by saying it's not ever coming only to reveal that it is coming a month later..... I don't care though because I'm not a big fan of multiplayer games anyway, and the few that I do play, I play on my 360 or on my PC.

i gave up on this feature kinda like on nintendo and no DVD feature... its pointless for them not to add this one feature other than being an ass i bought my ps3 on launch and have been waiting ever since investing in games and waiting but o well ill enjoy the campaigns of great games and mostly stick to gears and cod on the xbox for the multiplayer part

Sony could easily have the RAM set aside and have games programmed not to use all 256MB and only use 248MB and have 8MB for the streaming data for the mics directly the OS could use for it, and then playing it in the background is simple too, if a game runs and has that single bit flag set for "248MB Game mode with enhanced chat." It'd work with an OS update tomorrow if they wanted it to.

It can be done, they just don't want to make it happen. Don't let them BS you. Heck, I'm sure you could even scrape off 8MB of OS RAM if you tried to even do it, Sony. Don't tell me your OS takes up every single MB of the 64 or 128MB it has available in main RAM for it's self!

Why all the comments about a useless feature. Personally, it would be like talking on the phone while trying to pay attention to the game. For me it's a pointless feature and I don't know why people make such a big deal out of it. The whole point of speaking to people in games is to coordinate in that particular game, why talk about an unrelated subject while gaming, I just don't get it, but I guess some people want to make a big deal out of nothing.

1 - Why would you want to talk to other gamers while they're playing a different game?

2 - What are you talking about that needs addressing at that moment? Shouldn't you be paying attention to the game you're playing after all? What are you, a 13 year old girl? You need to be on the phone? That's all it is at that point. It's not helping you game.

3 - Don't you guys have phones for speaking to friends? I thought game time was for games.

4 - I have come to believe that this is a silly novelty that is only hyped up because 1 console does not have it. Let's be honest though, how often do you use it?

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
