GameZone's Andrew Clouther takes a look at technology and how it is destroying the turn-based RPG.

Microsoft announced its financial results for Q3 of fiscal year 2026, including an update on its gaming Xbox business and more.
Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.
To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Thanks to the slip-up of an artist working on the title, we now have more evidence that a new Injustice game is in the works.

Spiders: "We're going to cut straight to the chase so you're not left wondering: After a long period without clear answers, we have received confirmation that Spiders is being liquidated.
What does it mean? This means the company as a whole no longer exists. We'll cease our functions immediately. The planned DLC will release via Nacon, and then-- well, that's it.
We're sorry that it's come to this and would like to thank each and every one of you for your support over the years.
If you have any questions or run into issues with your games, please contact Nacon directly as we'll no longer be able to reply."
I have a friend who refuses to touch retro RPGs or retro-style RPGs like Cthulhu Saves the World because he thinks "the graphics are horrible." I'm so opposed to that douchy thought-process. I'm all for pretty visuals, but there's nothing wrong a cool 8-bit or 16-bit game.
lost oddessy? disgaea 4? the another world ps3? srw OG
Yeah turn based has no place on a console. But it does
"My suspicion is that the desire for this genre of game is not obsolete."
No shit sherlock, its why theres over 200 made in this gen alone
"RPGs are just not as profitable as other types of games, thus companies are less willing to create them."
FALSE again. Games in general only make 20 percent profit
a 7 year old game like trails in the sky made more profit than bulletstorm and la noire combined. You tell me whats more profitable? And theres more jrpgs in development than almost any other genre.
If todays graphics mean the same enginey realism styles that are so boring even developers are complaining. Screw it.
@da shredder
in no universe is the rpg genre dying. Not with the money it makes worldwide.
Radiant historia is the crono trigger of this gen and dragon quest IX (excellent) and dq x ( will be) are carrying the flag...........
Technology is what destroyed the rpg genre. I honestly don't understand why we just can't have a good turn based rpg as good as chrono trigger and dragon warrior 4 considering those games were made almost 20 years ago. Devs act like they don't have enough time to make a good ol turn based rpg. Makes me sick.
@ Stealth 2K
Lost Oddessy's story and characters were dull, but I did like the turn based combat. Mario Rpg was on the SNES did it better, but whatever, its all subjective to your opinion,
I like turn based RPGs more than action RPGs. I find them to be harder and have more strategy in battles
Ultima Online is the reason I choose not to judge games by the graphics. There are plenty of MMORPGs out today and none of them come close to the depth of UO when it first came out. Unfortunately, EA has since ruined the gameplay with expansion after expansion, but when it first came out it was golden.
