The Last Guardian progress has been "difficult" - Sony

TVGB: It’s been quite a wait for Team ICO’s The Last Guardian, and the development cycle clearly hasn’t been easy for Sony and co. Unfortunately, it looks like we’re going to have to keep waiting for details throughout the rest of 2011. That is if Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida is to be believed (which he kind of is).

I hope the team that developing this aren't having conflicts. I really want to play this game.

ATi_Elite5389d ago

maybe after this release they will have more money to hire a bigger team!

Team ICO makes great games but are very small Dev team. Sony should send them some help!

DigitalAnalog5389d ago (Edited 5389d ago )

Ueda's standards for hiring are very strict. He barely managed to get 50 to work for his team out of all the applications.

However, what he can do is get the team to work together (ICO/SoTC is proof of that) but the drawback is you somewhat lack manpower. Whatever, this isn't a game that's supposed to be competing with others, it's an entirely a different classification in it's own. They can take all the time they need really, too MANY games to play this and the next year.

ATi_Elite5389d ago

@ DigitalAnalog

I disagree.

With the game engine that they are making it would be cool if they could make more than one game per console Generation.

Yes ICO and SotC were PS2 but ICO was supposed to be PS1 but took forever!

They put a lot of time crafting a great engine that it would be nice to get another project out on it before the end of the console Gen that's all i'm sayen!!

Pufferfash5388d ago

If anything, they shouldn't be hurried with excessive support in trade for unity of artistic vision. We should be buying this game, whether it's in our interest or not, purely because of what it represents: an idea that is not being marketed, is not selectively targeting its masses, but instead exists as a vision whose progression is pushed by a diligent and unified team. If we don't embrace this time to support developers like this, what do we care for the industry?

If we want an industry that creates art, if we want developers to make games for the sake of experiences and not profits, we should start by supporting the developers that are doing this now, whether we agree with the final product or not. A little selflessness from consumers could help this industry in a big way. Choosing to support or not support a developer or publisher can make all the difference in how an industry develops.

DigitalAnalog5388d ago

I too would like to see more than 1 game Ueda this console generation. However, after the recent success and accolades from the media on SoTC, it is safe to say that he got very ambitious for this title.

But who knows, this console generation may last longer than the previous one and we may see a 2nd game from Ueda himself. This game must be really something if progress have been "difficult".

I it takes this long to perfect the game I'll gladly wait better than rushing it and it being shotty craftsman ship

Tilian5389d ago

I just hope fans (and critics) remember Team Ico is a very small team -- only a few dozen or so. The small size explains the length of development, but also the quality of their work.

StifflerK5389d ago

I'd rather they take their time and release the game when it's ready, rather then rush anything.

Waiting is a pain , but it'll be worth it in the end.

Ness-Psi5389d ago

A bit worrying but with a game this ambitious (molyneaux take note) they want it to be perfect.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8521d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele21d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk21d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay21d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10121d ago (Edited 21d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit20d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg20d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10120d ago (Edited 20d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14921d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I wonder if he tried to stop Shawn Layden from starting it?

Profchaos23d ago

Technically horizon came out in 2020 under Jim Ryan who took over in 2019

It's hard to tell who initiated the project but the Decima engine makes porting to PC fairly easy so who honestly knows if this was Jim's initiative or not I get the feeling it was

Redemption-6422d ago (Edited 22d ago )

It's actually not hard at all. Shawn Layden said he started it. Shawn Layden has confirmed that he was behind the strategy to bring PlayStation exclusive games to PC. Regardless of whether you hate Jim or not this wasn't his idea. It happened during his watch, but it was started before he took over. Below are links with him confirming it started with him

Reaper22_23d ago

Fake news. He didnt say that. This video was posted on YouTube and on here they decided to change the title. Shame on you.

i81duce23d ago

At 5:16, he literally states the thing you say he doesn’t say. Did you even watch the video?

GotGame81823d ago

Sony already said they weren't porting to PC anymore. Or, at least that is how I interpreted a couple of articles. I think if it were not for Helix, that may not have happened.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga28d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199228d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga27d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman27d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

blacktiger27d ago

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box28d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion27d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7228d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7528d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit28d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14928d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7728d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
