It was a 1-2 punch against his PS3. Dust blocked the vents and coated the chips like a blanket, and the entertainment center didn't allow proper air flow.

Haha, although this sucks for the guy, I can see how this is a legit void on the warranty. Has anyone ever opened their computer cases after a few months of not cleaning them? Due to the air flow, they are balls of dust everywhere. You have to clean them out every once and awhile or you risk the chance of shorting out the board (although this is rare) or risk not getting enough airflow. The same applies to any electronics, you have to vacuum the vents every once in a while. I guess it also depends on how dusty your house is, and whether or not you keep the air filters clean in your a/c. I know I've been over to some college friends of mines apartments whose places have been extremely dusty, because they never vacuumed or dusted anything.

Did it occur to anyone that it wasn't working because of the dust? The dust is obstructing the view of the laser (diode), and if its out of warranty he should just get it back and clean the dust out himself, a simple compressed air clean might solve all his problems.

While I agree this is unfortunate, how hard is it to check every couple of weeks to see if your unit has dust and then clean it. It's like people have never taken care of electronics. You paid a lot of money for your PS3 so take the time to clean it.

I wont delve in to whether this is true or not. But I will say I have had to put up with some ridicules situations on helpdesks and costumer services so I don’t think even if this isn’t true that any body can say 100% sure this is a lei.

If the head of the costumer service was told to try and save money (which is pretty likely) then some dumb person would come up with bull like this to not have to replace something.

Normally I hate it when someone post negative news for any of the console just for the sake of starting a fire, but let me ask this. Why is it when a week ago when a post about the MS Customer Service every damm person jump on it saying how crappy MS service is.

But when Sony does the same thing, because as I mentioned in the last thread every company has their share of bad Customer Service Reps., its just all bs and of course a complete and utter lie. Yea I bet this game sat down and wrote a 3 page story just because.

The PS3 gets dusty regardless no matter how much you use it. The type of plastic it's made out of and it being shiny black attracts a lot of dust. The 360 attracts just as much dust, you just can't see it as well because of it's color.

If you have both systems try it for yourself and see. Use a white rag and wipe each system down and you'll see just as much dust coming off the 360 as the PS3. That's why i clean all my systems daily.

The fact of the matter every system no matter what collects dust. It's not a conspiracy; it just happens. If you opened up most people’s desktop computer you would find a huge amount of dust just sitting in the case. Some case designs are better than others at preventing it but face it happens, and it’s not a diss on the hardware, just most people don’t think about it because dust while being a slight fire hazard or allergic hazard doesn’t normally cause the hardware to fail. So I would be surprised if Sony never even designed the case to block dust, I’m sure if they had none would get in. My guess is he just got a bunch of crappy people working when he called. Many times at centers like that there is a lack of available management and support calls that need to go to a manager get passed to a friend who just backs you up. Bottom line is just don’t know what temperament the employees he talked to were in. I’m sure if this same guy explained his problem to the CEO he would have it replaced and sent back first class.
As for all these fanboys trying to dismiss this guy as a troll get over yourself. Every single day the Better Business Bureau has complaints from large corporations where lowed paid employees pull crap like that. Yes even to the mighty Sony it can happen. The problem comes when they get 1000’s of reports that say this. So do us a favor except it and if anything this would be a time to help a fellow PS3 owner get his PS3 fixed (petition, calls, whatever it takes) so he can get back to gamming and supporting the community; other wise another PS3 owner might just trade sides. (For crying out loud what if you were in his shoes and all you wanted was your PS3 back so you could game?)

This is pretty messed up. I'm not terribly inclined to believe crap like this, but at the same time, this isn't the first bit of news I've heard of people getting ass-raped by Sony customer service, or any other customer service for that matter. Most people that work in customer service are generally buttholes, and if they're not by personality, they will be after having to deal with ridiculous phone calls from d*ckhead customers b*tching that their product doesn't wipe their ass well enough. I used to be customer service rep a few years back, and believe me, after a few months, God help anyone that had the misfortune to talk to me.

Customer Service is a VERY VERY VERY VERY stressful job, and I don't recommend it to anyone with pre-existing tendencies for human obliteration, because a job like that will NOT restore your faith in humanity.

Position it vertically. After using it, allow to cool down and place just a cover on the vents (they are placed at the top.) If you lay the console flat on things like carpet you`ll be collecting dust like a hoover.

The author gives names and extensions. I hope the article is not true, but if it is, it has to be the worst custoemr service I have heard. If dust can take out a PS3 in less than a year, there clearly should be a filter over the air intake. I suppose refusing to service in warranty PS3's keeps the failure rate down though.

Collects a ton of dust, and i play all the freaking time. (im not going to lie to you guys, im a PS fan and the 360 could suck my nuts) but like any geek, i use the compressed air to dust my electronics monthly(PC, PS3, LCD TV and monitors). Use common sence people...and if you are unlucky enough to have gotten sucked into the MS ad compaign and purchased a 360, DUST IT WEEKLY. dust slows fans and heats hardware.

Strangely enough though, my PS3 doesn't get much dust... I don't know how.. Of course neither does my computer that doesn't have a side panel =P. The PS3 is sitting on a small table in the middle of my room, next to my wii, about 4 feet from the TV, my room is always around 80-90 degrees in the summer, and around 50-60 in the winter(the insulation inside my walls is weak, the house is 150 years old!) My PC doesn't even collect all that much dust, of course it has a huge fan in the front, no side panel, and the PSU's fan sucks up all heat and crap inside the casing and blows it out. Only thing on my PS3 is a tiny dent on the very top corner on the disk-side. Probably got it from moving it all over the house until my sister moved out and I finally got my own room. I don't get much dust on anything in my room, but yet the whole rest of the house does.

Anyways, back on topic, if this story is true, sucks to be that guy. If he's making all this up to make the PS3 look bad while he's waiting for his RRODed 360, he is truly a sad, sad person..

Why do people say just wipe it down its got nothing to do with dust on the outside. Any thing with a fan inside will suck dust in. I always open my PC once a month and get my air compressor on it and give it a good blast out. Same with my PS2

I just read the entire article, and it's actually pretty convincing. This sounds like bad support, probably due to poorly trained representatives. If he keeps elevating his case, he might still be able to force Sony to send a replacement out. Honestly, this is sort of an off-the-wall circumstance when you really think about it. What I get from this is that he says they won't repair it b/c off too much dust in the console, hes not saying that the dust caused the problem. I don't remember reading what happend to make his ps3 go out, just that they won't fix it due to so much dust in the console.

People need to clean their stuff. Same go to 360 owners, as long it have a moving fan in it, clean it periodically, because it does collect dust inside. (doesn't matter if outside looks clean or not, inside can be like cotton ball)

Sony's policies for broken consoles have always been really terrible though. I remember when my first PS2 broke (disc read error, exactly 1 full year after I bought it), I tried to get it fixed, but they said it would cost $200 for repairs. Just went out and bought a new one instead...for the same price.

PS3 or 360, it doesn't matter what your warranty covers you for, if you don't take care of it. I had a PS that got soda spilt all over it, which caused "wierd" things to happen. Called up service, then Warranty Claims and finally got a "restrained service agent" to tell me no "as politely as possible". My own fault, right? Exactly. So, don't give these guys more ammo then they need. Lie over the phone if needs be. (That's how I got my 360's power supply replaced)

That's freaking crazy!! Mine gets dusty around the USB ports and side vents so I've been taking the air duster to it every week or so. Dust be gone.

I guess that means if you let your system collect dust because you dont have anything to play on it then you are out of luck.

Thats why i bought a extended warranty from Gamestop.. if any thing happens i take it in and get a new system with out a internal check for dust..

but, that aside, this just sounds bogus. and if it is the truth, why not just get a lawyer and sue. but then they will ask for the receipt! so, this whole story just sounds fishy. i've had my ps3 since launch and haven't had any trouble. i dust it every couple of weeks along with everything else in my entertainment center. if it did break because of "dust build-up" then i would say it's consumers problem. you have to take care of what you own. if you don't, it isn't up to the retailer or product maker to cover up consumers mistakes.

i know because i called sonys customer support just to ask them a couple of questions.
one question - would it void my warranty if i used a can of air? the answer was yes. but you could wipe it down with a dry cloth and use a low power vac (that i bought for $10 at radioshack)
another void of warranty - do not use dvd cleaner. only use the low power vac.
in the manual it says - dont let it collect so much dust in the vent, and if it does, you need to wipe it off because it will create heat damage.

this is a filter. i asked them if i could use this, and the customer support rep said yes. as long as it is not an intercooler (anything electronic, that plugs in to your ps3) - it will not void your warranty.
im not here to flame war or whatever you call it. i am only here for facts, news, and the truth, nothing more. i am not hating anything, but everyone has their preference and fav. ps3 and blu-ray happen to be my favs. i like technology and i think that the japanese are pretty good at what they do. if xbox was 100% made in the usa, i would support it 100%, but they are just selling their name. i am not saying that xbox doesnt have good games, as a matter of fact, i think they have great games. but i feel that the hardware is really crappy (the only reason i say that is because i had to fix one for my cousin, and two of my friends had them and they broke as well - i didnt fix those because they were still under warranty - who had to wait a really long time to get them back, where as my cousins - it took me a few hours to fix). when i looked inside, i said holy crap, everything was made in china, crap. but dont get me wrong, i did take advantage of this - i kept the xbox for a week and rented a few games and it was great to play :)

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
