Fighting Game Renaissance

Gamers have entered another golden age of fighting games much like the early 90s. With the recent releases of Mortal Kombat, SF IV, and Marvel vs Capcom 3 fighting games are on the upward swing. Developers and publishers need to take notice, this is the perfect time to release another Power Stone game, Darkstalkers 4, or the perfection cross over game featuring characters from Dead or Alive.

I'd love to see a new DOA.

darthv725388d ago (Edited 5388d ago )

DOA from VF from Tekken. They all have the same mechanics and style. Basically its the characters and controls.

So a crossover of VF vs DOA vs Tekken would work. For me it was more about the Art of fighting, fatal fury, SF2. An interesting crossover weapon based fighter would be Soul calibur vs Samurai Showdown. Or the ultimate capcom vs snk which is more than kof and sf2 characters. It would be ALL the different characters that span the various capcom and snk games.

I can see having characters from darkstalkers taking on the batter from baseball stars 2 or magician lord or even ninja combat.

edit: yeah baka...Capcom and SNK had their crossovers but I'm talking about something bigger than those two. Still a Capcom vs SNK but on a grand scale.

You are right about the similarities of the DoA and VF, etc. I was thinking on the obvious of how those games could be put together. The SF vs Tekken crossover is (or was) never conceivable until now with the character style of SF4 being closer to that of the 3d models in Tekken.

I'd like to see a real "fighters mega mix". Bringing fighters from across the gaming world into one game. Kind of like the sega one but having characters that made an appearance in ANY and ALL fighting games before. Turtles, clay fighters, dinosaurs....etc.

Prob wont happen with the amount of licensed IP's they'd have to use. Not to mention who would be entrusted with the development.

Baka-akaB5388d ago (Edited 5388d ago )

It's obviously just my opinion ,but i dont think the first idea works .

While having differences that set them quite appart , they are too similar in styles .

Also with VF , mixing with either would probably be a bad idea for VF fans , given how simplified the result game would be .

For me crossovers works between fighting franchies that are more dissimilar and complement each other .

Adding doa chars to a tekken based game , is just that adding more 3d models and skins .

Of course you might reply that Capcom vs snk happened , but even then we had two 2d games that didnt have the same mechanics nor pace , and with 2 equally charismatic rosters .

DOA chars dont have the same brand appeal than tekken ones . Tekken chars are colourful and easy to remember .. while doa got replacable boobs , and more recognizable boobs like Kasumi :p

Baka-akaB5388d ago

For dead or alive to be featured in any kind of crossover (an idea i dont like at all anyway , as i dont see the franchise being remotely as good as the most likely crossover candidates) , it would need to come back first with an interesting new doa main game .

puffkix5388d ago

That's actually what I would want. A brand new DOA entry into the main series.

Myst5388d ago

I'd like to see a bit of power stone revival or at least an HD make of it.

DanSolo5388d ago

I'd like to see a remake of that PSone weapon based fighting game in which you could kill someone with a single hit.... I forget the name of it, it had potential but never quite lived up to it!

I'd like to see Tekken losing the over the top combo's and ariel juggle combo's!

Soul Calibur is a great game, but needs some oomph to it!

Baka-akaB5388d ago

Bushido Blade (and a rather similar game on ps3 Kengo) .

As for the absurd juggling , at least tekken tag 2 will tone it down a bit .

Here's what Harada had to say about it :

PSB: I remember Tekken 6 being a bit controversial when it first came out — with walls hits and juggles and bounds, some people were annoyed by how long combos could go on. How will you balance this juggle-heavy gameplay with the addition of a tag partner?

Harada: There are some people who say the combos are too long and that it gets out of hand. The flip-side is, if you’re the person doing the combos, it’s really entertaining and fun. But you have to look at it in a new light with Tekken Tag 2. A lot of tag combos aren’t as long as those in Tekken 6 but they’re of strategic value: they reduce your opponent’s red recovery gauge. So you may wish to play that way. Also, after the bound, you can do a “Tag Assault” where you and your partner pummel the opponent. It looks really over the top, and it does a lot of damage, but the flipside is that you lose your red recovery gauge. So there’s a strategic element to the tag juggles — the goal isn’t to just perform the longest combo possible. You really have to choose the best time and place for each combo that you use.

DanSolo5388d ago

Oh yeah.... Bushido Blade, thanks mate!

I hope they do tone down the juggles in Tekken, it is a good game and I used to play it a lot with friends and I tended to fight quite strategically and found that to be far more enjoyable than doing ridiculous combo's and juggles!

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.

-Foxtrot48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

I was just going to say this, their biggest and top rated game here is TLOU2 for PC….it’s embarrassing.

Even Ubisoft and EA are ahead

Kind of surprised Nintendo is pretty low aswell, their biggest game is also a rerelease with the Switch 2 version of TotK.

StoneColdCrazy47d ago

That’s what happens when you start shutting down your own studios and forget what actually made you matter in the industry in the first place. Sony used to set the standard — now it feels like they’ve lost that identity. And if they decide to walk away from the PC market too, that’s going to be another huge mistake — that platform is only growing, and ignoring it now would just put them even further behind.

1Victor48d ago

@christopher:” Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.”
.
Why single out Sony? Microsoft didn’t do any better than the year before 5th same as Sony 9th and they have acquired activision and other mayor titles that have boosted their score massively from a 9th and Sony a 4th the year before the acquisitions.
Sony does need to do better without a doubt and I do hope they do take note but not the note of buying publishers is the way to succeed.

Christopher48d ago

1. Microsoft didn't get worse.
2. Sony got way worse.
3. Because Sony needs the criticism the most considering their publishing output this generation has been propped up by last gen ports and third-party developers for the most part.

thesoftware73048d ago

1Victor,

I don't wanna speak for Christopher, but like most of us we recognize that Sony's output this Gen has been way below their own standards.

Also Sony did buy a fair amount of Devs, I know you will say they were not publishers, and don't compare in size, but they had their fair share of Aquisitions, including the very well established Bungie.

The overall point is with their stellar first party track record of the past, they should not be going down, they are singled out because they are some of the best videogame devs/publisher on the planet...no matter what reasons we attribute to the situation, they are moving in the wrong direction... period.

KyRo47d ago

Its widely accept that Sony this generation has been underwhelming. We've had more peripheral releases, controller variants, PS5 accessories than games it feels like. The exclusives were also PS4 and what little output they have put exclusively on PS5 is nowhere near as memorable as what came in every generation before that.

This isn't a Sony hate post but anyone who's older and has been around for a long time gaming will agree that PS5 is by far Sony's worst generation. As much as Xbox is in the gutter, I pray the do bounce back in the hope we get Sony to wake up again.

darthv7247d ago (Edited 47d ago )

If you want to critique MS... you are doing so towards their management. The games output and their hardware have been much better than PS this gen. Sadly... people still hold a grudge against XB because of MS. Thankfully i am not that petty... I've been enjoying their games output in the drought of PS. And add in some NS1/2 games as well to balance things out. Things will change for me once Wolverine hits, and I start using my 5 more. That one I'm looking forward to. And the Marvel fighter... I'm not a GTA player so that has no bearing on my view of things.

Big part of that has been the live service push resulting in cancellation or flop after flop but when they put out the games their fans want we get amazing stuff like astro bot

Leadership really screwed the pooch trend chasing

Well I apologize I was wrong about not doing worse but my statement of Microsoft getting a boost still stand 🤷🏿

1Victor47d ago

Well OBSCURED unlike you I’m honorable enough to recognize when I’m wrong and apologize.
.
@ The software you know there’s no comparison between what Microsoft acquired and what Sony acquired that’s why you tried to get ahead of the conversation, yes we all know Sony can do better than what they have done this gen but they inhaled the poison GAS they thought would bring money for years but we make sure they got the message and quite a few games got cancelled you know as well a hit like that take years to be corrected and by now they hopefully will have taken steps away from the GAS and slowed their approach to them.

You will say anything when you are in denial that your hardware is dead and nobody wants your platform. Good luck with Helix because nobody will buy it.

But... but... the garbage-mongers always tell us that Square Enix is in trouble! 😂

Christopher48d ago

Square doesn't help that it fear mongers itself with ridiculous 'goals' that they can't reach and then they proclaim failure if they don't reach it. They're quite freaking profitable and people act like they're dying.

SimulationDaily48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

Keep in mind that these "proclamations" are usually third-hand bad translations from somedude who was at the investor conference, posted on Twitter, and picked up by press and youtubers like they were gold, and then when the official translation comes out, they're much softer statements, but at that point, the damage is done.

gold_drake48d ago

to be very fair

being number one on these things does not indicate how "well" their games do selling wise.
