Commander Shepard has Finally Played a Mass Effect

Jennifer Hale, celebrated voice actor for the female version of Mass Effect lead Commander Shepard doesn't play video games.

But she decided to play "middle-of-the-road Shepard," as she defines her choice to Bissell. "I want to hear my middle responses, because they're the hardest to land. Filling them with energy and emotion takes a lot of focus."

She only played the beginning of the game. She thinks she could have nailed her first line in Mass Effect 2 better, isn't so good with a right analog stick, and is able to possibly enjoy about an hour of the game before she's had enough. She doesn't seem to be smitten with Mass Effect 2—not from playing it, at least—but she does seem to enjoy acting the role.

She didn't play the game. Way to research a role...

Its hard to play a game for "research" before it has even been completed. Most voice actors/actresses aren't even given a full script before they hit the studio in an effort to minimize leaks.

Yes, but playing games and listening to your own voice helps as she discovered herself.

As a huge fan of ME (one of my favorites IP this gen) the voice acting could be better on ME.

grifter0245392d ago

I agree with pote.

She should have at least played or listened to the Mass Effect 1 dialogue before she jumped into ME2.

Good VA but she seems not to care enough to play the game or even watch someone play to hear the choices...no wonder her VA in the game is super monotone with huge gaps in between words to show the illusion of emotion.

At least Meer has played the game.

tigertron5392d ago

You sure you're not talking about Mark Meer's super monotonal voice?

jakethesnake5392d ago

I loved her voice acting in both 1 and 2. Way better than Meer's (IMO). I don't think it is really fair to criticize her since she did a phenomenal job.

grifter0245391d ago

Tiger- I agree in 1 Meer was super monotone, 2 he got better and in Arrival he did a phenomenal job.

I'm not saying Hale is a bad VA I just mean she should put in a little effort and actually finish the game instead of SAYING she wants to hear and see the choices but puts the controller down in 1hr.

Jake
I'm not criticizing her VA work Im only talking about her not putting the time to play the game and see the character she brought to life.

jakethesnake5391d ago

@grifter - I never played as a male Shep in ME2 (I was so turned off by his voice acting in the first). But if you say it is better in ME2, maybe I'll give it a try in my next play through

Jennifer Hale IS the role. She pretty much made Shepard from the 1st game when there was no game to play. Why should she need to then go back and play that to know the role for a sequel?

MasterD9195392d ago

Should be required to get familiar with the characters by playing the game beforehand....

Its like being in a Shakespeare movie but never reading any Shakespeare- you would be like "WTF is this???"

Bioware writes: "Like you, we’ve heard the rumors lately. You’ve made it clear you care deeply about what’s next. So let’s start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe."

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed

Like with Fallout, it's starting to feel studios are using TV / Film adaptations when they have no game info to talk about.

toxic-inferno188d ago

I feel the same way.

I mean, how difficult would it be for them to release SOMETHING of substance? Another short trailer? A couple of proper hints? A short story set during the original trilogy, but focused on fringe characters?

Hopefully they're working so hard on the game that they don't have time. But still, with every passing year and so little to show, the franchise will be slipping further and further from people's minds.

Profchaos188d ago

Yeah agree it's almost a cop out since Dev times are 5 to 10 years just throw out a few seasons instead you get them done in a year

jznrpg188d ago

I still haven’t beat Andromeda. I am waiting for a lull of good games in my backlog

P_Bomb188d ago

So the TV show will take place after the OG trilogy. I wonder which ending they’ll use?

Rebel_Scum188d ago

Should’ve just posted a picture of an Elcor saying “regretfully, we have nothing to share.”
