4 killer features needed via PS3 firmware not PS4

With so much talk of the next-gen consoles of late we think that some people have forgotten that Sony can still improve the PS3 via firmware update - what new features and improvements would you like to see?

At this point I'm convinced that there'll be an improved browser. Sony and other entertainment partners want it just as it is so they can control the amount and type of content that can be shown through.

Hulu blocked it, Youtube has restricted its functions and the most popular media players outside of flash, Bliptv and Dailymotion, just need updates but that's been about two years.

danswayuk5397d ago

I want a better browser too, but more importantly cross game chat.

Ranshak5396d ago (Edited 5396d ago )

Lol @ cross game chat as a killer feature.

Steam has it, XBL has it. I dont see whats so killer about it.

Having a proper Web browser isnt a killer feature either, Steam has a built in web browser, one that actually works. You can Shift + tab anytime to bring up the browser during game play.

In game music isnt a killer feature either. I used to be doing that like in the late 90's on my PC.

They should instead replace killer with ordinary or something along those lines.

kreate5396d ago

yea those arent really that 'killer feature'

ps3 has cross game chat.
but text only while xlive is voice only.

its the most wanted feature amongst ps3 gamers cuz thats what the xbox fanboys use as an excuse to justify their xbox live payments.

but still, many gamers probably legitamately want that feature although its not worth the money.

and girls like text chat. most ppl like text chat. thats why we text instead of calling.

Godmars2905397d ago

How the hell did I exclude "wont?" As in there WONT be an improved browser because Sony wouldn't be able to limit/control content.

Ever since I've tried to improve my typing its gotten worse!

3GenGames5397d ago

I don't have a PS3 and think it's an okay system, but the day the PS3 gets Chrome is the day I buy one. At the same time my Xbox would get IE9 and I avoid it like the plague. >.>

SeanRL5397d ago

While I don't agree with buying a ps3 for just chrome, I do agree that it's a very important thing to add. Actually I agree with adding all of these things, they would definitely make the ps3 even better.

3GenGames5397d ago

It wouldn't be the sole reason, but having that feature and then the free online would both combine and make me want to pick one up over my Xbox possibly.

BitbyDeath5397d ago

We haven't gotten a decent firmware upgrade in, i don't know how long. I think they've switched focus to the Vita & PS4.

I don't mind though, what we have right now works great.
Roll on PS4.

3GenGames5397d ago

Yeah dude, and the last update was only to stop homebrew, right? Sad. :(

willie325397d ago

I would rather see them focus on PS4 at this point. A few updates would be nice. However, I have given up on cross-game chat. It will be in their next system.

sikbeta5397d ago (Edited 5397d ago )

Pretty much all the stuff that was left behind in the PS3 will materialize in the PS4, case XGC and such and all the things that would be added in the PS3, would be more like a beta test for the PS4 as well, case cross-platform gaming between PS3<->PSV being standard for the PS4...

Close_Second5397d ago

You obviously dont try pull up the xmb whilst playing a game and your tv does media playback if you think the ps3 does everything well.

The ps3 is dead in terms of firmware updates that actually deliver. Sony want you to buy their new tvs or the vita so why would they enhance the ps3.

BitbyDeath5397d ago

You're better off waiting for the PS4 for that. ingame XMB came later and obviously does not have enough memory to run properly.

No device is perfect.

RevXM5397d ago

@BitByDeath

I believe that is bullshit, the xmb is quite a hog at resources (id softwares J. Carmack said so)
And with some code optimazation and a redesign a lot of memory would be freed up.

I think ps3 would be that much more awesome if it gets:
XGC voice messages.

A deep notifican app.

A stable up to date WEB browser.

Redesigned XMB and more customazation, maybe more streamlined interface that ties stuff better together sort of like steam does on pc with tying your stuff, your system with the store, community and etc in one and the same UI, that is great and easy!(Maybe too much to ask for tying everything together but it would be great)

Defragmentation option.

(Faster and simpler PS store).

REAL auto trophy sync.

Better/richer PSN profiles.

VLC media support!(MKV, M4V etc)

JBSleek5397d ago

A revamped OS and better servers.

Sony is a great hardware company but fails at software!!

Karum5397d ago

Yeah the only software they excel at is games, otherwise they are very below par and that isn't just the PS3 but things like their Walkman as well.

For example I bought one of their touch screen (I think) X Series walkmen and whilst it was great, it was missing an absolutely HUGE feature to me which is the ability to create custom playlists on the fly.

It's sad because their hardware for evertyhing they make is top notch but software lets them down here and there.

ChiVoLok05397d ago

They should also do something where you can watch sports, sort of like Netflix.

thebudgetgamer5397d ago

they already do, with mlb and nhl.

ChiVoLok05397d ago

Do they do it with soccer?

thebudgetgamer5397d ago

just those two as far as i know.

NyGiants75397d ago

Or just watch it on your tv O.o

ChiVoLok05397d ago

I was just wondering if they had soccer and was at a cheper price then cable because all I use cable for.

rmatott5396d ago

well i would assume you could subscribe to foxsoccer.tv and then watch via your browser on the ps3, I havnt tried it, but assume it works, you can test out the site before purchase, might be a way to watch soccer through your ps3

Cross game chat? How bout we get people to actually use the damn mic first!

FAGOL5397d ago

What games do you play? I've found that on PS3 there are alot more people on mics on CoD (but I mute them because they're usually immature kids). BF:BC2 I rarely find anyone who is on a mic.

Also usually people play with friends and mute everyone else.

videoxgamexfanboy5397d ago

i play pretty much everything and most of the time ppl dont use mics. the only game i play were ppl seem to use mics is socom.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8522d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele22d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk21d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay21d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10122d ago (Edited 22d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit21d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg21d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10121d ago (Edited 21d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14922d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle35d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit35d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog35d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog35d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad35d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_35d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage35d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda35d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
