Equality: How Video Games Are Outpacing Reality

SFL Chronicle: Not all video games take the chance to make a political or social statement, and I don’t personally mind that. Sometimes, I just wanna’ shoot sh!t and have fun. But when video games do take on difficult subjects, it’s surprising how much they tend to outpace our own reality. This article (one of hopefully many) is to discuss how games are working towards goals of equality, how tastefully and honestly these subjects are being handled, and how these subjects in the game world compare to the real world the players encounter on a day-to-day basis. Specifically, this week I will be focusing on LGBT subjects, and will focus on a different subject relating to equality in video games (racial equality, feminism, etc.) each new week.

That was such a well written article.

I'm already disappointed that it has been approved less than an article released after it that as poorly written and rambled about being addicted to generic shooter leveling systems and challengers.

Just like gaming needs equality so does this website. Don't be so conservative.

Dramscus5394d ago

There you go, it still took eight times longer than an ign what game do you want on your ps4 article. Which sure it's ign but how many of those have we seen already.

Now Dramscus won't call us idiots.

Godmars2905394d ago

I'd rather have more surrealism in my games, thank you very much.

Neckbear5394d ago (Edited 5394d ago )

This man gets it.

That said, if you truly want equality, stop branding yourselves as different by any reason. This applies to about everything; from sexuality to race. Not like this applies to the article, but hey, just saying.

Oh, and by the way, most actually hate the homolust in BioWare games. Again, just sayin'

@KFox109

Interesting data; however, I do believe they're just trying to justify the fact they want to appeal even the faggiest of fags. About everyone I've actually talked to who has played, say, Dragon Age II, felt that the homosexual option was nothing but...needless, if bothersome.

I can't speak for everyone, sure, but ah.

@Godmars290

You know, I do have to wonder how hamfisting stereotypes in a videogame makes games more diverse. Surely they could at least handle it in a much more...normal manner, if anything? As it stands, it's as pitiful as looking at a retarded puppy die suffocating in its own shit.

"Oh, and by the way, most actually hate the homolust in BioWare games. Again, just sayin'"

Clearly not, considering Bioware is adding same-sex romance option in Mass Effect 3 because they feel that it's justified with the data they have collected on how many people actually use the option. This isn't stated by me, mind you. Those are the words of Casey Hudson, Executive Producer of the Mass Effect series.

Godmars2905394d ago (Edited 5394d ago )

Its not about "equality" but devs realizing that the industry needs to be diverse. That not everything needs to be first or third person, in real time much less as good if not better than reality.

@KFox109:
Yeah, just so long as my male Shepard doesn't become butt-buddies with Mordin from asking him too many questions.

That was about as awkward as him telling me that many women have approached him.

KFox1095394d ago

@Godmars290

I think that's less of an issue of same-sex romances than it is of being ninja-manced in most Bioware games. They said they were working on it. I personally find it hilarious sometimes. I've accidentally romanced crew members, laughed it off, then reset to the last checkpoint.

Thoreau5394d ago

games do not outpace reality. movies, books, and video all are representations of a type of reality.

whydoyouask5394d ago

It's a fictional universe, you can make up anything you want.
Including Equality.

30fps sucks. Especially on an OLED.

Dragon Age Lead Says Including World State Reactivity Felt Like It Was "Irrelevant Or Not Enough"

Dragon Age 2 set the precedent that the series would always carry our choices over, but was it worth it?

If the choices won't matter, why bother? Bioware works so hard at giving meaningful choices but rarely if ever carrying out the impact of such choices to the end.

Mass Effect - N7 DAY 2025

Bioware writes: "Like you, we’ve heard the rumors lately. You’ve made it clear you care deeply about what’s next. So let’s start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe."

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed

Like with Fallout, it's starting to feel studios are using TV / Film adaptations when they have no game info to talk about.

toxic-inferno189d ago

I feel the same way.

I mean, how difficult would it be for them to release SOMETHING of substance? Another short trailer? A couple of proper hints? A short story set during the original trilogy, but focused on fringe characters?

Hopefully they're working so hard on the game that they don't have time. But still, with every passing year and so little to show, the franchise will be slipping further and further from people's minds.

Profchaos189d ago

Yeah agree it's almost a cop out since Dev times are 5 to 10 years just throw out a few seasons instead you get them done in a year

jznrpg189d ago

I still haven’t beat Andromeda. I am waiting for a lull of good games in my backlog

P_Bomb189d ago

So the TV show will take place after the OG trilogy. I wonder which ending they’ll use?

Rebel_Scum189d ago

Should’ve just posted a picture of an Elcor saying “regretfully, we have nothing to share.”
