What other Developers can Learn from Blizzard and Diablo 3

The real world trading problem is one that has caused great disruption and headaches to game developers worldwide. Blizzard may just be the only company that has learned that real world trading (RWT) can not be combated. No matter how hard game developers work to find a way to combat these illegal black markets, there’s always a way.

What other developers can learn from Blizzard and Diablo 3: How to alienate your fanbase by designing features to cater to the people who have been breaking your TOS for years.

Real world trading is inevitable, if that's what you are referring to. This is the only way. Kudos to Blizzard imo, other dev's go ahead and change the game due to RWT, Blizzard simply integrated RWT to the game itself. That's what I try to explain in the article, have a read =)

"Real world trading is inevitable"
your point?

diablo 3's not even an mmo. Going through all kinds of hoops and shady web sites to buy items in d2 that could be scams was enough to keep it to a niche market.

granted that niche market had money to blow. At what point did it become ok to design a game that catered to them and not the core fanbase?

Diablo should have been a one time buy. As long as Blizz got their cash from the initial sale anything else that happens after the sale should not be their business. I've never seen a company try so hard to keep their hands in the jar of things that shouldn't even concern them.

If they put this much effort into stopping RMT like they are thinking up ways to nickel and diming us. RMT may have been an afterthought.

after thinking 10 seconds a very effective way of hampering RMT is making EVERYTHING Bind on Pickup or Bind on Account.

How to make a real PC Game that caters to the likes of PC Gamers and not stupid console ports. Add Valve and the Euro Devs as Devs you can learn from.

As far as the Diablo 3 store or whatever, cut Blizzard some slack cause they are just cashing in on something that has been going on for a while now. It's only right that Blizzard gets a cut cause hey it is their game that other people have been making money off of.

Don't you think Blizzard cringes every time they see some clown making $1000's selling Warcraft gold on E-bay?

In all fairness, people have always given Blizzard crap for everything, yet they still buy the games and play them for hours/days/weeks/months/years. People gave them crap when they would sue sites selling D2 items for real cash and now that they are implementing a cash auction house in the game, they do the same again.

palaeomerus5401d ago

If things go on as they have (no stat building, always online, auction house with real money, etc.) then I'm not buying this one. That's not the sort of stuff that I loved about Diablo. I'd rather just settle for Torchlight 2 and go back and play Titan Quest if this is the best they can do.

And before you start with the "you'll buy it anyway" I didn't buy SC2 either.

I think this is Blizz' way of testing the waters. I have this feeling that should this work out well for D3 that this type of auction house could end up being implemented into WoW. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if it's already listed as a feature of the next expansion.

Blizzard Wants Faster Diablo Releases and More Expansions

Blizzard reveals plans to speed up Diablo releases with more frequent expansions and updates as the franchise moves toward a live-service future.

All I want is a physical disc release of remastered D2 that doesn't require online check-ins.

I've lost complete interest. Too much FOMO with seasons as it is, now it's expansions? No thanks.

Michiel198982d ago

what fomo? everything gets reset each season and you start new characters unless you're playing on the regular servers and then you're already maxxed anway and just need to participate in the new season stuff.

Michiel198982d ago

i played only during launch and i found the ones in that battlepass to be absolute dogwater, the only ones that looked somewhat cool were the paid ones in the store and i wont bother with either. The game itself was just so hollow, there were no cool builds cause every synergy was just "x or y skills does more dmg or has this extra effect" almost no experimentation needed, couldnt give a rats ass about armor if the core of the game is boring af.
