I'm sure there will be lots of people that disagree with that article. I totally agree with this resolution part though. The Audio is pretty close to being true. The audio part should be true, but movies that have both a TrueHD track and PCM track the PCM track has sounded better. Supposedly TrueHD may have some pre-process going on with it with that tones it down when in fact it should be a bit for bit copy of the PCM track. Something for the studios and or Dolby to work on more.

As for movie prices start shopping online and screw the stores. They totally rip you off. I just picked up Cars and Ratatouille on Blu Ray from Amazon for $34 shipped. Amazon has probably the best prices for movies that I have found. If your were lucky enough to jump on their deal last year when you bought 3 movies at one time you get 10% off all High Defintion Movies (Blu Ray and HD DVD) for a year. I'm going to miss that sale come the end of the year. I may have to do a bunch of pre-ordering for some big box sets before then!

its in the ps3 physically its not an add on or nothing so even if lets say hd-dvd won(lol) then there will still be blu-ray disks around,it wont go no were its used for games to

Incorrect. That's why some compression methods are called "lossless compression". Completely uncompressed sound is always a waste of space. There's no reason to store your music as a .wav when you could go with flac at 2/3's the space and 100% of the quality.

How is HD-DVD even considered a format. It is still DVD techology with some improvments.

Blu-ray is a new format as it brings new things to the table. Thats why HD-DVD has all the extra features it was easy to convert these features over while blu-ray have to build from scratch.

mmh, HD-DVD players at 98 dollars still has no effect over disc sales.

BR is out selling HD-DVD by 2 to 1. $99 is more like a desperation push to get the format adopted.

I figure you go with larger storage capacity, which is why I went with Blu-Ray. Expect Toshiba to hit major losses for uncutting themselves.

I've said it once I will say it again. Toshiba sellings these players for so cheap is a big loss with a tradeoff for install base. Imagine back when DVD was out as long as HD-DVD...they were selling them at 400-500$ and it wasn't till a long time till we saw them drop in price.

Toshiba is being wreckless, imho.

This is all my "opinion" but it will make sense. The PSP came out with a new media format known as the UMD. UMD stands for universal media disc. Technically it isnt so "universal" if only one company is using it but it is universal in the sense in how it could be used.

Having said that, why were there no other UMD playing devices made other than the PSP? There could have been a stand alone player for the movies considering the number of studios and titles to choose from. I could have seen a small USB based attachment for the PS2 to play not only the movies but also the games. Instead we get a revised PSP with video out. Still does not solve the problem of why there is only one player capable of playing the UMD movies.

The quality is near DVD and being so small it would make storing them really easy. Studios stated that they were pulling suport for the format due to declining sales (or no sales) of the unit and/or movies themselves. Sony (i think) is the only company to still release movies on UMD as I have seen the UMD movie release of Spiderman 3 at my local Target going for $19.99.

I feel that 'had the format taken off' there would actually be compact "movie only" UMD players. The studios maybe didnt give it enough time??? The issue with bluray and hddvd are in a similar predicament. Sony has a format that was released to the market packaged in a gaming device yet this format was also given the opportunity to be made separate. This is where the parallels of UMD and Bluray part ways.

HDDVD is the true "evolutionary" successor to DVD while Bluray is the "revolutionary" successor. It has been proven by consumers in the past that evolutionary devices end up being the mainstream because of the legacy to which they have evolved. Revolutionary devices are great in that they bring to the table a slew of features that really go above and beyond the current state of things but the downside is most are viewed to be to far ahead of the curve to really be taken seriously.

There are consoles that were that way and while "revolutionary" in their own right, they did not garner the support of the general consumer. Some times they make a comeback because the time is right and the market has matured for it to be viable. DVD is the norm. People want that transition into the next gen to be as easy as possible. Price is the driving factor and if things continue to progress then it will ultimately be HDDVD as the winner. Bluray is still the better format overall because of storage capacity per layer but when it comes down to price, hddvd players are cheaper, the discs are cheaper to make and the level of complexity is lower on the average consumer.

This has just been an opinion and should only be viewed as such.

edit: I forgot to mention studio support. Yes Blu has the majority of the major studios backing it but that could change based on how well a "DVD" version of a movie does against it's high def sibling. While you can't get Disney movies on HDDVD you can get them on DVD and upscale them. The same goes for Paramount movies. You get the DVD version and upscale it on a Bluray player. Point is there is another way around the roadblocks set forth by the movie studios. If a consumer has one format player and really wants the movie that is in the other format, they get the regular DVD version to satisfy them. That is until there are strictly high def versions of new releases with no DVD equivalent. It happened back in the Tape/CD/Record days and could happen again.....

All conned by the Movie moguls. There really is no difference between the two ( that is only if your going to buy anything that's big as a projection screen-size plasma or lcd t.v. to { fully } see the big ho-ha ).

Price is the main and only factor that would drive ( all ) consumers.
Good on Toshiba for releasing a bargain basement US$99 HD-DVD for all budget conscious buyers.
