Seems like the console has a bad reputation in the market in terms of it. The Xbox 360 is becoming the cultural choice for gaming for many adults and teens alike in England.

The price reduction was set to cause a boom in sales but I said it from the first minute that Sony need to continue that trend, and to even better it, if they want to overtake Microsoft in world sales.

What's equally worrying is that there seems to be indications that Ratchet & Clank isn't selling too well either. Although VGChartz isn't the most accurate source of data, it estimates the game sold around 140,000 since launch. Ace Combat 6 has outsold, and this Ratchet is meant to be an AAA title.

This should be a cause for worry for Sony. It seem's perhaps that suggestions of "too little, too late" may have some weight. Have Sony ruined their reputation with a high launch price with lack of games? Are people just not thinking any different of the console as of late?

Sony must sell atleast the same amount of hardware as Microsoft this holiday semester. It's a must. Although I'm confident games like MGS4 will sell alot of hardware, what will the future be for the console of the Xbox 360 continues to outsell it?

Regardless of what happens this generation, Sony have learnt a massive lesson. That $600 price tag of the console and the lack of games, despite its first year - it was competing with a console in its 2nd year, with AAA games coming out frequently, the first year is a sad excuse. It was their own doing for the hardware that was delayed and it just seems that people have decided that PS3 is not for them so they're looking elsewhere. Again, the price has gained a reputation. The lack of games aswell. I bet there are still people in the world who think the PS3 has no good games or it's still too expensive.

What a poor day for Sony. If they fail this holiday, especially in Europe, then there's no way back unless they sell atleast 1 million consoles every month in 2008 and not even the most avid fanboy could imagine that.

Sony just never really tried, but they are starting to now. A year after launch they've started to put on good commercials, cut the cost and delivered great games. It's like a relaunch but is anyone listening, is anyone watching? They should have done this at the start of 2007 or early then, it's almost 2008 now and I don't see how Sony will finish anything but last this generation.

With the price cuts and upcoming games, I expected around 2-3million consoles sold this holiday. Ofcourse it can still happen but I'm getting vibes that it won't. Personally it doesn't bother me because I bought the console for the games and I'll enjoy it anyway, but it's disappointing to see such lack of ambition on Sony's part at the start of this race.

If anyone is considering buying an Xbox 360, you honestly won't be disappointed. It can be faulty, yes that's a big negative for the gaming experience it's fantastic and no one should be surprised by how well it's doing. I'm not negating the PS3 here but Xbox 360 fans have alot to enjoy and I think some PS3 fans ignore this fact. It get's too much hate from people because Microsoft are the underdogs in the industry compared to Sony - who owned this industry 2 years ago. But you gotta give credit where it's due.

Well the ps3 is in for a big week this coming week. Europe will be have games such as Lair, Ratchet and Clank, Call of Duty 4 and other. I think those games will move some ps3 units over there.

yea, one needs to look at the monthly total to get a clear picture. also, the ps3 is still maturing. how quickly people for get that the n64 pwned the psone during its launch year and that the dreamcast pwned the ps2 during its launch year. how quickly people forget how things can turnaround in this industry. too many kids/teens running around quoting numbers and stats and opinionated news articles. if one wants a clear picture, one only needs to look at history to know that all successful consoles (including the NES, SNES PSone, Gameboy) have all struggled out of the gate but still ended up on top. Another interesting side note: Only one Major Franchise has ever determined the dominance of a console. that franchise is Final Fantasy. look at it like this:

Sony is a stupid company, they make the most stupid decision ive ever seen in ma life time. i could run that company better then they can. First mistake they release a 600 dollar system, they should had released te 40gb ps3 first then release the 80gb. Second they let all their exclusive go. they should hve know that they must keep these game exclusive, but they let them go. third they didnt advertise the machine well, there commercial was horrible. We get this sort of news nearly every month, who cares? This is just a splash in the ocean for Sony.

Well in 2 weeks the Ps3 will of been out a year and has only managed to sell 6 million units in that time...

We can simply say, what we knew in front and have seen with the price drop in July:

The 360 sells constantly on a steady rate and outsold the PS3 in Europe (especially most important market: UK) for 2007 besides July and the past week or two.

Microsoft will give the final blow just before Christmas, lowering the price of the 360, the 360 Premium will hit 279 to 299 Euro/Dollar for sure. Prepare yourself to see the battle of two giants, like Sony was up against Nintendo in the 90's. Sony = the new Nintendo. Arrogant, slow moving, not able to catch up.

Those people were buying up the 60 gigs when they were thinking they were going too be discontinued...look for NA sales too be on par.

in Europe PS3 and XBOX 360 are neck and neck. The PS3 gets a spur in sales because of price drop but it still costs more than 360.

i dont think sell numbers are that important anyway =D. ds is outselling psp like a crazy frog on drugs, but psp still has some amazing ultra nice games. just becouse one console does bettter than the other wont kill anything. this generation there isnt the same effect than in the last one with xbox beeing really messed up. this time all three are doing ok to great. we should enjoy that. competition is a great thing. so dont insult people. we will all have a very good generation. =D

i dont dispute the fact that ps3 isnt doing very well, in comparison to 360, and i can appreciate why with the launch of halo 3 and mass effect.

I am just tierd of waiting, ma patence is wearing out. My wife bought me a PS3 last christmas have yet gone a week without playing. There are fun games for it if you really sit down and play. Also in the artical its says they use vg charts numbers, i thought they were not reliable. Any way all three systems have there plus and minuses it just comes down to what you want in a console. Enjoy your system whatever you get.

XBOX fanboys don't mention that according the VG charts PS3 sales are up %26 higher than any other console. This is where PS3 has to make an impact. They have to start somewhere. November and December will be crucial. If PS3 doesn't hang in there, then I think it is an early grave for the PS3.

The 360 has 2007, but 2008 is all Ps3. The ps3 has the best 08 line up then both wii and xbox360 put together. And no one can argue with that.
Nex year is sony year, microsoft released all their good game on the second year of their console life spam, that is why the xbox360 is selling more than the ps3. But next year sony has the better line up. Everyone is going to want to play mgs4, ff13, ffversus, grant turismo and god of war 3. Also sony sold 6 million ps3 in one year in the Na and 7 months in other countrys. So its not doing horrible at all. this time next year sony will releas its peak games and we shall see a big turn around.

I do plan on picking up a PS3 next year.

Sega and Nintendo did. The third console syndrom! Sega's third console was the Saturn (not the failed 32X) and it was trounced by the Sony PS1.

Nintendo's third console was the N64 and it too was trounced by the PS1.

In fact if you look at every console maker and see past their 2nd system you will find that it was usually the 2nd gen system that was their highest grossing system. So in most respects the third comes at a loss compared to the 2nd. Mostly due the the much larger install base of gamers who dont want to move past the great games for that gen system.

MS is on their 2nd gen system and this will most likely be the high for them. If Sony follows suit and makes it to a 4th like Dreamcast/GameCube/Jaguar (yes the Jag is Atari's official 4th console) it may spell doom until they try for a 5th (ala Nintendo's Wii).

Maybe Sony can break the 3rd system curse and have it turn around this upcoming year. We will just have to wait and see.

Before the PS3 stands a chance it needs two games:

Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gran Turismo 5.

People need games they can trust to be great fun before they get into a console, and Sony hasn't given that yet.

Sure, RFOM and Ratchet may be great games, and there may be other good games in the PS3 lineup right now, but nothing is generating enough hype. Nobody really cared much about Ratchet or RFOM that much because they aren't industry big names.

Just look at all the hype around Halo 3 and Mario Galaxy and you'll see my point.

The 360 had the hook in right away with Oblivion, PGR3, and Forza 2, and other sequels because those games had big followings. Now the industry is in the middle of the Halo 3 following joining up with the 360 side of things, which is huge for the 360.

To hook people on IP's like Mass Effect and Bioshock, the 360 needed games people could trust to support it. I'm sure this has a lot to do with why multiplatform games like Guitar Hero III are doing so much better on the 360 as well.

Sony should know this, they did it with the PS2...it's just taken them far too long to polish off their heavy hitters for the PS3.

Hopefully for good competition to keep up, when MGS4 and GT5 come out, the PS3 will pull out of it's slump to meet up with the 360.

With this long of a wait there's no reason for MGS4 and GT5 not to be big system sellers.

you are definitely the sonykid I thought you were, but you at least have the ability to take off the sony goggles and see reality, I had alot to say until I read your post, that basicly says it all no matter which console you favor your #7 post is spot on, I said in one of my posts the other day, micro simply has the popular opinion/word of mouth on the streets that its a great gaming console, people are impressed, I know on n4g we tend to forget that we are the vocal minority on both sides, all the gaming sites members total is still a tiny fraction of the whole gaming community (console owners and potential owners) and for the most part they have no care for this petty little "war" we speak of= THEY BUY WHAT APPEALS TO THEM THE MOST, and despite what n4g sonykids say, other than the wii, the 360 is thought of by most as the best gaming console= sony has alot of catching up to do, people are sick of promises, sick of talk, don't blame the media, don't blame micro, BLAME SONY.

I am hating this generation so far I wish I was still in blissful ignorance when I got the PS2.

360 or PS3, HD-DVD or Blu-ray it is starting to annoy me.

I hate all fanboys on this site with equal disdain. Yes the PS3 is a year behind and the 360 is doing well and the sales are higher that I expected but there is no need to rub it in peoples faces. Thinks can happen like today about the rumour of the 40% failure rate in the PS3 and some people were at a loss for words at the tables had turned and the same could have happen to the 360 if PS3 sales pick up next year.

Well I have a PS3 and before people label me a fanboy and put in on the ignore list I will tell you why.

1. The PS3 has established franchises that I love and 360 hasn't got any that are not mutiplatform.
2. I hate on-line play and 360 seems to be its main focus. I add two or three points on reviews if they had been taken away for no on-line play.
3.Lastly 360 hot games are all shooters and Mass Effect looks good and it will appeal to 360 owners at its an action RPG shooter. I hate racing and shooters and I only have one which is resistance. I might get Haze as it seems to bring something new to the table but I will decide later.

I will admit the the PS3 will end up in third place after FFXIII comes out. With the PS2 FFX release helped to send the PS2 into the success it is now. It these sale and everything in between doesn't boost the PS3 we have entered the era of the Xbox and thats where I will get off. At least I have over 200 PS1,PS2 and PS3 games in total to keep me entertained.

This generation sucks. The leading console is just plain HORRIBLE, it's not next-gen. I mean, I really don't care if it gets "many games", the way you play it, and the way the games look and feel, the fact that many next-gen games on it are IMPOSSIBLE to make just really turns me off. I'm not gonna buy a Wii until it's readily available and $99 or less.

And the leading console, which although has a good online service, charges for playing online (even with lag), has died on me 3 times, scratched 3 of my games and killed 2 of my hard drives. Couple that with the fact that, while a lot of good games, MOST OF THEM ARE OF THE SAME GENRE THAT MADE THE FIRST XBOX POPULAR! That is, it's not really different from the first Xbox! Just one japanese game here and there, but even if it does, the lack of blu-ray drive makes the experience inferior to what it should be; LONG GAMES like the ones you found on PS2. That's because next-gen games require a lot more space.

And third, the PS3 thanks to its lateness in... everything, even though hardwarewise it's almost perfect, its games are coming too little too late. I hope it gets at least half as many japanese games as the PS2 got, otherwise I'm gonna have a very dry taste from the game industry in this generation, since games made for the Wii will not be as good as they could be, especially Since Nintendo games steal the spotlight anyway, and Xbox 360 is prone to failures AND it just won't succeed in Japan. Hell, the best bet for Xbox 360 is that Sony somehow finds success in Japan, otherwise great next-gen games won't be ported to Xbox 360, since developers won't even bother making them (And say hello to the dark age of videogames).

Please, Meus Ressistance and others, don't tell me Xbox 360 won't disappoint me, because it has already several times with failures AND with lack of variety of genres. If PS3 doesn't partially succeed this generation, then there will not be another "PS2", at least not soon, definitely NOT this generation, since Xbox 360 will keep flopping in Japan and it's not the state of the art console that PS2 was for its time (yes, the first Xbox was even better hardwarewise, but it failed in Japan and its controller was horrible).

There's still hope for PS3 though. There are a few Sony made games or sony published games that seem to look and feel great in every respect. But if those don't work, then indeed the game industry is doomed as we know it, say hello to acceptable failure rates and an excess of casual games. The only thing good of that is that I'll find more time to work and make money...

I dont get this site. First it shows totals of systems and games..sold or shiped? Then you have people saying the numbers are true and then the same people saying they are false. Which is it? Is it true when it is in your favor and false when it is not? It can't be both!

You all act as if the decline of sales is something to seal the fate of Sony. If that were true then the decline of sales in Japan seals the fate of MS but it doesn't. Just be satisfied with the system you purchased and play the games because no manner of words will convince you that you purchased the wrong one. It shouldn't matter to you if the rest of the world likes or dislikes the system. It comes down to the individual decision to own it. You get it for what it gives you. Games that are fun and entertaining to YOU if that is all that matters....and it should.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

So now there's certifiable proof that Ryan was in fact "fired", as opposed to when it was first announced that he "retired", in order to save face.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
