Catherine: More Difficult Than Demon Souls?

Geek Revolt writes "Demon Souls is notoriously difficult, it requires you to die a million times and learn from your mistakes (while pulling your hair out), but Atlus’ upcoming game Catherine might have just stolen the title of hardest game this generation."

"it requires you to die a million times and learn from your mistakes"

I'm sorry but that is NOT considered difficult. Its considered annoying and tedious and I'm still shocked that people still enjoy dying over and over again. Definitely a niche market.

CernaML5414d ago

So uh... what is considered difficult then?

bwazy5414d ago

Needing much effort or skill to accomplish, deal with, or understand.

Trial and error DONT fall under that umbrella term.

frjoethesecond5414d ago

@ bwazy

By repeating you learn, gain skill and better understand a situation. Re-trying is an effort. Did I miss anything?

beavis4play5414d ago

so, bwazy - you come up against flamelurker for the first time - there is NO skill or effort that will help you. unless you have a strategy guide to tell you what he will do - most people are going to die a few times before they get him...... and there are tougher enemies than FL waiting. having to die doesn't mean it's necessarily "trial and error". it can just be hard.

LOGICWINS5414d ago

I LOVE the fact that its difficult. More replay value and more satisfaction when you actually win.

I played the demo which was on easy mode and I was surprised by how many times I died at first. I counted more than 20 deaths in all. Personally, I like that. It forces you to learn the game and feel like a God when you master it!

Lyr1c5414d ago

Maybe not a God.

Possibly a High Ranking Officer. ;)

Tru_Ray5414d ago (Edited 5414d ago )

I died at least 20 times myself before I finally completed the demo. The second staircase puzzle was pretty tricky, but I was very satisfied when I finally mastered it. This is the kind of gaming that enjoy. The greater the challenge the greater the reward upon completion.

"more satisfaction when you actually win"

Not me. When I win (after dying like 6+ times) I feel like I just wasted a lot of time and enjoyment that could have been had elsewhere.

Ryo-Hazuki5414d ago (Edited 5414d ago )

yep that's whats wrong with this new breed of gamers. Love to have there games easy to beat and if the going gets tough they lose interest or complain. That's why the majority of the games on the market nowadays are just easy and very few hard games.

flyingmunky5414d ago

A little caution and prepping goes a long way to relieving frustration in Demon's Souls.

The only time I got really frustrated was when I tried to take on the red knight at the beginning of the game when I had no right to. I didn't know what I was doing at the time and also thought that killing him would give me something awesome.

Ah man now I want to play Demon's Souls again...

Cpt_kitten5414d ago

erm okay so your mister golden gamer and can go through demon souls with out dying?

it is difficult if you don't think which is what a lot of people tend to not do because most games hold there hands

you said "Needing much effort or skill to accomplish, deal with, or understand." which is what demon souls is all about, understanding that you make mistakes even the very little misstep can ruin you. you do need skill to be able to take down bosses and learn there weaknesses and there is a lot of effort getting to the end

just because you have a hard time playing it doesn't means its annoying it means you have no patients and don't pay attention to what you are doing and make mistakes

BubbleSniper5414d ago (Edited 5414d ago )

actually.. that was what it was like back in the 80's, for me... I died in most games, but you tend to get good enough to know the "patterns" once you learn those you understand how the game functions against you and you eventually own it, literally.

games are way too easy now at days... and accessibility is just a kick in the groin for someone like me who craves the hard... hell.. games like Fallout or Left 4 Dead have to be on hard or expert so I can enjoy them, otherwise I'd beat them much too fast.

admiralvic5414d ago

Everyone is different... some people said Spelunker was a horrible game for the same reason.

vickers5005414d ago

"I'm sorry but that is NOT considered difficult."

Disagree.

"Its considered annoying and tedious and I'm still shocked that people still enjoy dying over and over again. Definitely a niche market."

Agree.

Trial and error (through death anyways) is just annoying and isn't any fun at all to me. I don't mind dying 3 or 4 times every other chapter, but when I'm dying 3 or 4 times every 10 minutes, then the game ceases to be fun, and when it ceases to be fun, then there is no reason to play it.

I also don't care about pretending I'm a badass for beating a certain part of a game, so when I hear comments like "don't be a p*ssy" or something along those juvenile lines, I just laugh. I'm not going to waste my time on a game that I'm not having fun on. And I don't feel better or feel that sense of accomplishment after beating the thing/level that killed me 15-20 times (like the last boss in Uncharted 2 on crushing difficulty, that mother f*cker), I simply felt like I wasted my time being frustrated and pissed off.

Dunno about the full game ( haven't got mine yet ) but level 2 in the demo was a bit of a tricky b*st*rd.

LOGICWINS5414d ago

Agreed. Def buying the game eventually.

NellyNel_7_1_35414d ago (Edited 5414d ago )

im buying it for the ps3 real soon!

NellyNel_7_1_35414d ago

Yea, level 2 demo (360) was a pain in the ass lol.. After like 5 tries I finally beat it.. I will try to get it for the Ps3.. I like games that challenges me to think...

Lyr1c5414d ago

@TheColbertinator

...Andddd that's what HE said.

Peaceful_Jelly5414d ago (Edited 5414d ago )

this is a puzzle game where you need to actually use your brain and some people find that difficult. This is not the same kind of difficulty that you'd find on a game like Ninja Gaiden or Demon's Souls.

TheColbertinator5414d ago (Edited 5414d ago )

Use your brain.

Catherine requires you to calculate the block moving seconds of the collapsing structure.Manage time, accuracy and reflexes to survive and head for the top.No one will hold your hand or congratulate you for failing so it comes down to two things.Rely on yourself and push your mind.

Think fast or Die.
