The PS3 Is Harder To Develop For, Now Let’s Move On

Geek Revolt writes "We’ve heard it before—the PS3 isn’t the easiest console to make games for. It’s common knowledge at this point, but every few months a developer brings it up, again. What do they hope to accomplish by voicing their frustrations all over the internet? Here’s why complaining doesn’t benefit the developer, it only makes them look bad."

Let's move on? What a Rupert Murdoch thing to say! ;)

zootang5453d ago (Edited 5453d ago )

To me, it's the sign of a good developer these days if they get the game on the PS3 on par or even better than the competition.

VINNIEPAZ5453d ago (Edited 5453d ago )

"To me, it's the sign of a good developer theses days"

Oh STFU with this already. Like many have said before some developers are very small and dont have a lot of resources/money to make big games like UC or GoW. Its stupid for Sony to keep making systems that seem made hard to program for on purpose. You guys act like just because a developer may say, "Yes the PS3 is a little harder to program for" you act like they automatically suck and they just sit in a corner sucking there thumb from the butthurt. They can probably still make great game but that's there opinion about the PS3. Stop being so defensive, you think its just some rumor that popped outta nowhere.

EDIT - lol Ok its sounds like I'm more worked up than I really am. Just hate seeing these same Sony drone making excuses for every Sony does. "Oh its harder to program for, well if you cant handle it that's your fault. SONY FTW!"

evrfighter5453d ago (Edited 5453d ago )

Ya lets just sweep it up under the rug instead of letting them know that super complex programming only hurts everyone. Especially if its proprietary to only one company for one console generation.

arjman5453d ago

Vinnie I agree with you about small developers but it's you who is acting defensive.

NanoSoldier5453d ago

calm down vinnie pooh ...

SilentNegotiator5453d ago (Edited 5453d ago )

Vigil games is NOT the developer that deserves final word on this. On both the 360 and PS3, their ONLY game is sub-HD with no AA.

PS3 haters can pretend like some new studio has the talent, and this is all the ps3's fault, but the signs are completely missing.

Plenty of other studios have absolutely no trouble at all with the ps3.

PS3 haters are trying too hard, Now let's move on.

radphil5452d ago

"Oh STFU with this already. Like many have said before some developers are very small and dont have a lot of resources/money to make big games like UC or GoW."

And yet you have companies like Atlus and NIS who are niche and smaller than other ones that don't moan or complain out to the public.

Ps3 is hardest to develop for.
I would actually say its harder for them to develop for just you have to give it full attention let me ask.
how many multiplat devs use cell properly or balance across the cores or the spu's? is it
if you give it the right attention i doubt its harder

Ranshak5453d ago

Remind me why should a multiplat developer go out of his way to develop for an unknown architecture.

Sony should have simply given it a PowerPC CPU like the Xbox and given it a much more powerful GPU like the 8800GTX. PS3 would have been playing all games in 1080p near 60fps.

I guess they initially wanted Cell to do all the graphics work which is why they wanted to implement 2 cells in the PS3, after they released how much of a disaster its going to be they rushed over to Nvidia at the last moment. Considering the PS3 was 1 year late i dont see why they didnt equip it with the latest gpu Aka G80xx series. Xbox 360 launched with the latest GPU available at its time. PS3 laucnehd with an already outdated GPU (sure it was comparable in power to what the Xbox had, but that was because xbox launched 1 year ahead).

nickjkl5453d ago

pre 90s

why should people learn power pc

what we had at that time is clearly superior since we already knew it right

basically your arguing people should stick with what they know and not learn anything different

which is why multicore development on pcs has gone no where

SweatyFlorida5453d ago

The reason for the 1st question you asked is IN the question you asked, they want to go multiplat, their gonna have to learn whatever architecture that is on that other system then, simple as that. Sure its hard but the pay off is quiet nice, sorta like Demon souls ;)

You overcome challenges to make you more skilled, devs shouldn't be spoiled like your saying wanting everybody to hold their hand. And Cell produces games (once done right)that are better than some(if not all) 360 games in terms of graphics. Killzone 3's graphics are unmatched for 1st party games and Uncharted 2 is simply awe inspiring. and Sony probably opt out for the better GPU because the Ps3's price was already insane at launch.

Ranshak5453d ago

@sweetyflorida

Actually aside the firstparty devs hardly anyone is using the cell to its potential and again most devs dont invest the time because they dont dont want to be wasting so much resources just for 1 platform.

Had the Cell not been developed that money could have been saved toward a 8800gtx or so, trust me PS3 would have been leagues ahead of what it is today just with that one change. When it comes to graphics tasks cell stands no chance against a piddly RSX let alone G88XX class gpu.

dangert125453d ago

listen if your not going to utilise it properly don't complain its too hard to use. thats like going to war and falling to the floor screaming argh i'm dead before you've got out of the base

Persistantthug5453d ago (Edited 5453d ago )

But it and the CELL PROCESSOR (newer versions of it) are likely to be used in their next Console interation.

If it wasn't for the PS3's architecture, we wouldn't have all of the new AA implementations that we currently have which spawned from MLAA. DLAA, FXAA and others.

New things spawn new innovations, Ranshak.....that's how it works.

Edit in: Ranshak also said:
"Actually aside the firstparty devs hardly anyone is using the cell to its potential"

Apparently VALVE doesn't agree with you, seeing how they used MLAA on Portal 2

No offense, but I don't think you really know what you're talking about, sir.

Ranshak5453d ago

@persistantthug

yea and lets turn a blind eye to the rest of the developers. is it so hard to accept hardly anyone aside firstparty use the cell.

God you PS3 fans are a deluded lot. no ones arguing at the capability of the cell, i am just saying most devs dont invest in it because they dont see it worth the financials it needs. Which is why PS3 is mostly always in 3rd place when it comes to multiplats.

Had Sony saved their money and gone with a G80 class gpu i can assure you it would have resulted in better graphics then whatever cell + RSX can dish out. regardless of how even first parties optimise for the cell it wont ever reach to the sort of performance a G80 can, i hope that clears things up.

tiffac5452d ago

Sony couldn't make the PS3 any easier to develop because the philosophy of Ken Kutaragi (the father of Playstattion) believes that a machine that is harder to develop will make the developers better and create new ways of developing products (in this case games)

Ken was looking at it at a tech junky point of view not at a casual developers level. There is a reason he is not with Sony anymore. lol!

He should thank Kaz Hirai too. Kaz sticked his neck out for Ken by making that lousy ten year cycle excuse thing.

Persistantthug5452d ago

For 1, obviously without use of the Cell Processor, you'd have no game....It wouldn't work, obviously.

2nd,
I just gave you an example of the Cell processor being used with MLAA and Valve using it....VALVE of all people.

In fact, MLAA is now part of the EDGE toolset that allows all developers to use it.

From what I understand, DICE is going to use it too.

Sony creates the tools, develoeprs use it.......that's how it works, Ranskak.

Now if you mean to say that the MOST IMPRESSIVE stuff seems to come from Sony's first party developers, vs most of the 3rd party devs, then yeah.....but I think we all know that.

Ranshak5452d ago

Please dont give us the garbage without Cell you wouldnt have the game. An 8800GTX with a dualcore cpu beats whatever a PS3 (Cell + RSX) cand dish out. I initially played a game like Crysis in 1080p on that setup. Seems like PS3 with a dumbed down crysis 2 can barely handle 720p. So i wouldnt say game wouldnt be possible if Cell wasnt there.

You do realise MLAA is a shader effect its not even real AA and can cause games to go blurry. The only reason they introduced MLAA is because its not as resource hungry as MSAA.

Also its not like MLAA is limited to the Cell, PC GPUS can do it to, its just that they never used MLAA because MSAA is still superior. PC never really needed MLAA and still most people with AMD GPUs prefer not to use MLAA because it tends to blur text, hence is not a good option for games where you need to read too much stuff.

Persistantthug5451d ago

On the PS3, If you DON'T use the Cell processor, your game won't work.......PERIOD. That's not conjecture...that's a fact.

Secondly, Sony's implementation of MLAA is not the same as the one used by AMD....Sony's is a custom version. In fact, there is no better rendition of MLAA in gameplay than the one that is used in PS3 games....that is also a fact.

Godmars2905453d ago (Edited 5453d ago )

Don't make games on it then. Ignore its user base and don't make money off them selling your games to them. Deliver sub-par titles equal to the effort you want to invest which will then be compared to 1st party titles, devs who do give a damn, and see sales of your game on the system be negatively effected as a result.

Otherwise shut up.

JellyJelly5453d ago

Or it could be that first party devs get more technical support from Sony than third party devs, and therefore more often deliver better looking games.

renegade5453d ago (Edited 5453d ago )

Well Kojima productions is third party and they still have one better looking ps3 game up to date. Only dedication that's what matters not laziness.

dumahim5453d ago

That's true, but being a PS3 exclusive probably got them way more help from Sony than they would have gotten had it been a multi-platform game.

DJMarty5453d ago

Move on yet 'geekrevolt.com' needs to go over old ground just to get hits to it's lame site..........LOL

matey5453d ago

wow this site wanks on about mainly ps3 so much a developer voices his concern because after recently working on WiiU he felt the ps3 is a pain whats wrong with that the 60 is close to wiiu in terms of ease of development ect if he said the wiiu is hard as hell to develop for N4G would be doing the opposite to this get over it the ps3 CELL is crap

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle56d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.
