The Visual Limit: Are We At the Cap?

Visuals this and visuals that. People care about how good a game looks, but what if we are closing in on the limit that visuals can actually go?

The human eye can very easily tell what is real and what is fake (in terms of CGI), and even the best CGI movies (Avatar for example) have some moments where you can tell it is CGI. So even movies aren't at the cap just yet though they are getting extremely close. I think games still have a ways to go since it is all processed in real time unlike movies.
Also its not just static visuals but animation as well is just as important

I do think we're reaching a place of diminished returns. Devs are using almost 100% of the added processing power on graphics alone. I would like to see better physics, more enemies, bigger maps, better AI, etc.

Sure, we see that sometimes but for the most part it's just better graphics.

@Wenis

i agree, regardless of how amazing a game may look, Battlefield 3 on £2000 PC for example, you still KNOW its a game so your going to be looking out and will easily notice its not real anyway.

"are we reaching the cap" is asked every so often, from PS1 to PS2 and now PS3 etc, as long as technology continues to grow and expert designers continue to take advantage of future tech i don't think its possible to hit a "cap"

With Gears 3, Uncharted 3, BF3, Rage (?) I think we're pretty much there. it's not so much a bad thing though, because it now forces devs to explore the architecture of the consoles more than ever to squeeze out every resource they can. Lately, I've been seeing games with better lighting effects, particle effects, physics, etc.

@darktower

UC3 looks incredible having played the beta and watched demos etc, but seeing what devs can produce for the folks out there with $3000+ gaming PC's, in the future graphics will be far superior to that of the witcher, uncharted or gears

its not just about how they look either, its all about fine tuning sound, making animation more fluid and realistic, we dont sit aand look at screenshots all day after all, games are constantly in motion.

we're nowhere near peek.

DarkTower8055422d ago

@faceless, I wasn't talking about pc's. Of course pc's will always be ahead of the curve. Devs rarely make full use of what a pc can offer. I'm talking about consoles.

Senshaitian5422d ago

Animation is actually what I was referring to mainly, but very good points nonetheless.

Until we can get a game that LOOKS exactly like real life and PLAYS at the speed of real life, then no. Not yet. But we are close.

Xelestial5422d ago

It's to the point where CGI can sometimes make you double-take, like Avatar, but consoles especially are not pushed that far, and frankly, it'd be a waste of money to do so.

Not sure if we want a game that looks like real life exactly. Real life can be very ugly.

What is with all of these dumb articles and peeps with poor brains that seem to think that graphics have reached the limit.

Maybe you peeps need to get out of the house more and visit real forests so that you will know how far away we are from the max graphics possible.

How the DMCA Laws Put Indie Developers at Risk

Filing a false DMCA claim costs nothing, requires no proof, and can destroy an indie game's launch in minutes. Fighting back can cost tens of thousands of dollars and take weeks (if you can afford it at all).

Copyright is copyright. DMCA is a good thing that protects creators IP., revenue and usage. and you can absolutely appeal a wrongful DMCA takedown. It’s happened to me. Was easily resolved.

....I don't feel like you read the article, at all.

it's a good thing, but it's also long been reported, across a variety of industries and websites, that currently the system is ripe for and full of abuses. From fair use strikes, to matters like the one reported in this article. It's clear the law needs some tooth to punish bad actors and that parameters need to be set in how reports are filed; ie human review of said content and not some AI bot false flagging stuff. As is the system is far to easily abused by those who have motive to suppress and flag content they have no business or right to.

Commentby97d ago

No system will ever be perfect, but there needs to be a review, unless it blatant.

Nevers0ft96d ago

Until there's genuine consequences for this type of abuse, it'll keep happening across all media. DMCA is in principle a good thing, but it needs an overhaul.
