Is There a Place Left for Innovation?

First of all, be warned, as this is a long post and its many inquiries might feel unanswered at end, but if you also feel like the industry is increasing the size of the cookie factory and you keep getting the same batch of bland chocolate chip cookies, you might like it. Without further ado, let’s begin:

What is the most innovative game you've seen lately?

Yes, but I don't think there's much in the realtime and real world direction the industry is currently on.

Someone needs to step back, ignore graphics, and pay more attention to mechanics.

I think there is a lot of room for innovation. Assassin's Creed proved that. It combined a multi-layered story about history, religion, and science with a fluid parkour system combined with knife/swordplay.

To this day, the Assassin's Creed franchise has become the best selling new IP this generation.

Im looking at you Guerilla Games

I wouldn't say that there isn't innovation in the industry, but rather many creators have developed a "me too" attitude.

For instance, if a shooter is released with a brand new feature never before seen, and it works well within the genre, then every subsequent shooter will incorporate this idea. Very rapidly, that new innovation becomes stale and overused.

This isn't a new phenomenom, but it seems to happen more rapidly this gen then in previous ones. Part of this blame is on the developers, but comsumers/critics are also part of the problem. For example, as soon as [insert new shooter] comes out that doesn't this or that feature that [insert other shooter] had, players and critics cry foul.

Also, the author uses the point that there are a lot of sequals. This is to be expected late in any console generation - companies want to bank on a known franchise that is familar to the consumers who own the console.

Developers are still innovating and creating new IPS. Just look at Little Deviants and Light and Sound they seem pretty innovative to me.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9218d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit18d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing18d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9218d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
