Is Uncharted 3 Being Overhyped?

GamerFitNation's Gregory Laporte provides his opinion on whether or not Uncharted 3 is being over-hyped and overshadowing other great PS3 games. "Uncharted was a great game and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was game of the year. Now where does Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception go from here."

I'd say no, previous titles have seen it merit the hype it receives.

Abash5425d ago

*sigh*

I hate all these "Is PS3 exclusive """"" " being overhyped?" and "Where's the hype for PS3 exclusive """"" "?" articles

Notice how you never see these low-end sites doing it for the exclusives of 360 or Wii

WhiteLightning5425d ago

@Abash

Like Alan Wake....then on top of that bring it out on the same day as Red Dead.

On N4G every ps3 exclusive is proclaimed the next big thing. Now label me a troll, but you cant deny the truth.

On topic: Uncharted deserves all the hype its getting, its one stellar game.

DaTruth5424d ago (Edited 5424d ago )

Is awesome-sauce on epic fries being overhyped?

darthv725424d ago

it is typical of series (any kind: tv, move, game) that if you have a good first and a great second that the third has more pressure riding on it to top the previous ones.

That is really dependent on the story. I guess it is easier to do this in games than movies as you can create whatever story line you wish for the follow ups. In movies, sometimes it isnt that easy.

I just started in on UC2 and find it to be a really good game. I am expecting no less than the same quality out of part 3. For them to exceed that is a bonus and I welcome that greatly. If part 3 turns out to be more of part 2 then fine with me. 2 is turning out to be fun and entertaining to play.

If it aint broke....

i say yes...
will be the same as Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 case

TBM5425d ago

Yes that's why part 2 won sooooo many goty awards right?/s

This game is getting the hype deserves because this series is that good. It has everything we want gameplay, story, characters, great looking graphics. We couldn't ask for anything more.

perdie5425d ago

@TBM wins in every possible way with his post.

M-A-R-S-H-A-L-L5424d ago

Uh-huh. Uncharted 2 was named game of the year so um...no.

Greywulf5425d ago (Edited 5425d ago )

Sony's games are hyped differently imo. They are hyped based on tangible factors. Not advertising campaigns with budgets that could have made an Uncharted4.

1. Gameplay,Story,Tech,Visuals not seen in competition. = True.
2. GDC/Media Awards for said tech = true.
3. GOTY awards, more than HL2. = True
4. More gameplay variety = true.
5. Defining the "BAR" to be compared to.. ie competition "Our game will look better than Uncharted.."etc = true.

And its all Hype based on what has been seen & demonstrated. Its hard to knock someone for saying "I'm hyped to play the level I saw with the water flooding the ship and dynamically changing the way you have to play" versus "Man, did you see that old man shed a tear in the commercial??!?!"

Example:

MW3 is hyped for the units its going to sell.

@abczby
While I agree with Half-life being a genre defining game and it being a totally new innovative way to do story telling that doesn't make it better or worse than Uncharted. I think Uncharted took what Half life did and expanded on it aka INNOVATED upon the ideas of Half Life. Greywulf also has a point in saying that Uncharted 2 gained more awards. It has more awards than any other game that has ever come out, including Half life. Greywulf wasn't trying to sound like some ignorant fanyboy, what he says is true. Also haven't you noticed that a lot of developers are comparing their tech, story, how cinematic their games are to Uncharted? Uncharted 2 has set the bar just as Half life 2 did. Plus they are in completely different genres. What Uncharted does better than most games in its cinematic approach. I like playing games feeling like I'm experiencing a movie with high production values. Also the GOTY award you are talking about is the SPIKE VGA's which is only ONE award out of the many Uncharted received. Plus the nominees were good (excluding COD). I mean C'mon? Assassins creed 2? Batman: Arkham asylum? LFD2? Those are some fun games! Plus, what you said about Halo 2? really? Halo 2 wasn't good (not as good as 1 which was a genre defining game). So in the end to say that Uncharted 2 has ZERO innovation and ZERO originality is quite ignorant. It may not be as innovative or original as half life when it first came out, but just like Half Life did it set a bar for games to follow and is helping the industry evolve as a whole as are many other games. Now as for my opinion I prefer to keep it to myself and just go along for the ride the game industry is taking me on.

solar5425d ago

what games are compared to UC2 by the media the same way HL:2 is? i dont remember a single one. plus, in 2004 you didnt have 200 nameless websites like today crowning "GOTY" awards. todays journalists are jokes, see: IGN, the PS3's extremists most hated.

IcarusOne5424d ago

1. Gameplay,Story,Tech,Visuals not seen in competition. = True.

This cracked me up. Gameplay?! Story?! Lol. Please. Let's call a spade a spade. UC does everything that the best games have already done 100 times over. It just does these things incredibly well.

Angels37855424d ago (Edited 5424d ago )

@Solar

You obviously have never heard of the Interacttive achievement awards, golden reel awards, Academy of interactive arts and sciences awards, Writers guild of america awards, Game Developers choice awards, and the Annual Game Audio Network Guild Awards. ALL OF WHICH were around when HL2 came out. Some of those awards aren't picked by journalists, they are picked by professionals from the film and writing industry (not even the game industry in some cases). Also I NEVER said nor will I EVER say that Uncharted was compared the exact was HL2 was compared to other games, but they are similar. Like an example would be the director of DICE comparing their tech and cinematic story of Battlefield bad company 2 to Uncharted 2, the game director of visceral studios (dead space) comparing the exact same aspects. There are plenty more as well who have also compared. Notice though how they compare only graphics and story? Thats because like I said HL2 and UNCHARTED 2 are DIFFERENT. HL2 did some thing that Uncharted doesn't do and probably never will do which was innovate gameplay for their genre. Lastly their were tons of nameless sites when HL2 was around. Many went by the wayside. Also if you bother to look at the GOTY awards Uncharted 2 received there are only CREDIBLE publications. So again what Uncharted 2 has innovated is the cinematic approach to video games (HL2 did it as well, but uncharted took bigger leaps and bounds). Their were not games as cinematic as uncharted before it came out, granted there were close ones like MGS4 and Gears of war, but they never hit the sweet spot. They were all kinda hitting a wall that needed to be broken.

@ Icarus one

Read above^
Also you kinda just discredited your point.
"UC does everything that the best games have already done 100 times over. It just does these things incredibly well."
HENCE INNOVATED upon previous ideas and made them better. I do however agree that the "Gameplay and Story being better than the competition" is laughable. I say that because the gameplay of uncharted is as old as the 3rd person action adventure genre itself LOL and while the game is AMAZINGLY cinematic that doesn't make the story good. The game does a good job of making you feel like your there in intense situations fighting for your life and puts together a satisfactory story to boot. So basically to the untrained eye the story seems amazing. But in reality its the way that its told that is amazing.

Ser5425d ago

Nope. Uncharted 3 is fully deserving of its hype. I know Uncharted 2 was.

DanSolo5425d ago

Not at the moment, and it certainly isn't getting hyped up as much as some other games.... although when we get closer to release I'm sure the hype will turn up a notch!

Unicron5425d ago (Edited 5425d ago )

I haven't seen that much hype, just Beta talk lately. Especially when compared to other fall titles. Though I'm fully expecting to see UC3 be reviewed as better, yet score lower.

UNCHARTED2FANATIC1664d ago (Edited 1664d ago )

I cant even say what the point was its easily the worst story in the series. The online was a whole lot of fun though but overall doesn't come even close to 2

porkChop1664d ago (Edited 1664d ago )

It was a step back for sure. Personally, I thought even the MP was way better in U2. Solid game, glad I played it. I just think they didn't push as hard as they did with U2.

UNCHARTED2FANATIC1660d ago

Yes both the online and story was better in 2 no doubt

Flewid6381664d ago

The "young Drake" portion was pretty top notch, story-wise. But yeah, everything outside of that I felt was inferior.

DanielEndurance1664d ago

Villains were all over the place in this… one second they wanted Drake dead, the next they needed him, then they want him dead again, then they coulda killed him, but poisoned his friend instead, then coulda shot him again, but had brunch with him, then needed him alive, then coulda mowed him down, but decided to kill him by fire and let him escape… Uncharted 2 was way better. 😅😅

slowgamer1664d ago

=D Sounds crazy. I don't remember any of that. Played it on ps3 and I remember thinking that why was this game so bashed compared to second one. I liked it.

Chocoburger1664d ago (Edited 1664d ago )

Another thing that annoyed me about UC3 events was the agent Talbot teleporting around Turkey. It just felt off to me, and made no sense.

Also, for about one third of the game, you go on a wild goose chase to rescue Sully, who wasn't even there to be rescued, and you end up back where you started again. There was simply no pay off for all the events you go through, so it fell flat in that regard as if they couldn't figure out how to make the game longer, so they decided to side-track you to do something with no pay off, hoping you wouldn't notice due to all the incredible action set pieces they made.

Overall though, even with its flaws, I still enjoy the game.

TheEnigma3131664d ago

This was actually my least favorite in the series. Didn't have that same impact that part 2 set.

Flewid6381664d ago

Uncharted 2 is the pinnacle of the series (to me).

Granted, 4 had the best story in my opinion, but 2 was the overall best game.

When arguably the weakest game in the series is still awesome and more fun than most games today, you know you're onto a winner!

coolbeans1665d ago

I'd extend "arguably" before awesome too. Many technically demanding scenes were jaw-dropping for the time, but it's tough to ignore the sub-par context propelling the action forward.

SullysCigar1665d ago

Tough for you, perhaps, and that's fine. I enjoyed it very much. Perhaps a little less than the others in the series, but then the bar is extremely high.

I remember being blown away by the water and sand tech in U3 for the time too. It certainly was a visual treat!

LucasRuinedChildhood1665d ago (Edited 1665d ago )

It is very good, but when I originally played Uncharted 3 it was the most disappointed I'd ever been in a video-game because Uncharted 2 was just that good. I enjoyed 3 much more when I replayed it in the Nathan Drake Collection though. I could just enjoy it for what it is and accept that it's not Uncharted 2 - it's not a roller coaster, and it doesn't balance and rotate between action, puzzles, platforming and set-pieces in the same way.

Uncharted 3's gameplay is a bit more compartmentalized and focused on one thing at a time. I'm not surprised the scrapped version of Uncharted 4 was going to have no gunplay for the first half. It's also paced much differently - it takes a long time to get to the notable set-pieces. Uncharted 2 is insane from Nepal onwards which is about an hour into the game. haha.

I did like the introduction of chase sequences, and I love first hour (bar fight, young Drake) and from the airplane sequence onwards but I just think the rest of it just sort of meanders along without as much purpose as 2.

When it comes to the script, you can feel the absence of Neil Druckmann and Josh Scherr (writer on every other console Uncharted game). Drake gets hit in the face, and the game goes on a random side plot for an hour to give you some boat set-pieces. He then washes up on a beach close to where Elena is staying to get you back to the real plot. Drake just says "How convenient" to try make you laugh off how sloppy the plot got.

In retrospect, I'm not sure if Naughty Dog were ready to work on 2 different games at once. 3 clearly had production issues that 1 and 2 didn't have, and Hennig's version of 4 didn't work out. They had to crunch so hard to get the rebooted version done on time that Bruce Straley gave up making video-games.

coolbeans1665d ago

I'll give you some props for the extra analysis. I remember Druckmann climbing his way to a writer spot in UC2, but wasn't aware of Josh Scherr. I didn't know that was the reason for Straley's departure either. That's pretty damn rough.

GhostofHorizon1665d ago

They had to make some weird choices as far as story went because the actor for Cutter had to bail which left a few holes in the story.

Uncharted is one of my favourite series and while the leap from 2 to 3 was not nearly as big as the leap from 1 to 2, I think it was an amazing experience none the less.

coolbeans1665d ago

Graham McTavish's departure wasn't easy, but I don't think that would fix many holes tbh. Because the main issue to consider is the precarious mindset Naughty Dog was operating on: an increased emphasis in set pieces that HAD to go in and worrying about the context later.

Petebloodyonion1665d ago

I really liked part 3 ( Among Thieves is still the best in my opinion) My only complaint was the interactions with the villains and how they were a missed opportunity, Linda MacMahon (Marlowe) was an interesting antagonist due to the history with Sully and Nate but it fails basically flat especially with her ending. And I couldn't care about Navaro 2.0.

What I did love and made me care was Cutter, in the short time he was in the game you could feel that the guy was a good treasure hunter for example when he pulled his own notebook with the clues he founds so the team can escape a room.
It was a small touch that add a lot to the character.

Good-Smurf1665d ago

Marlowe was played by Rosalind Ayres.

MadLad1665d ago (Edited 1665d ago )

I have mixed feelings on the series. I still own all of them on the PS3, and the collection for PS4, but I didn't truly "love" any of the games until 4.

They're good games, but they always stumble on some element.
The first is good, but the climbing mechanics weren't exactly fine tuned with the first showing. Not to mention the spongey enemies if you played on anything past normal; but you're then faced with a fairly unchallenging game experience.
The second mostly fixed the climbing, but added in a pretty clumsy stealth mechanic.
Three was just two with a new story.

Four got it right though.
I don't remember once getting annoyed by any mechanic had in the game.

I know that everyone has a soft spot for 2, and 3 is sort of the black sheep of the series; but they did, overall, get progressively better. Which doesn't always happen.
