Have computer games become boring?

There are some vintage video games that will live long in the collective memory. Space Invaders, Tetris and Doom were original, inventive and didn't have a number after their name. Nowadays, the market is saturated with sequels and franchises.

But does that mean innovation has dried-up?

I think they hav, there either too short or too samey/borin

The stand out games of this gen (so far) in my opinion are Demon's Souls, Heavy Rain, Fallout 3 and.........Braid

Obviously there has been other games ive liked, but as much as ive like them theres always been summin i DONT like about them - example "Assassins Creed", the game looked and played awesome, just got borin as hell after afew hours

gunnerforlife5404d ago (Edited 5404d ago )

I'd say yeah they have!
i havent spent a good amount of time on a game for who knows how many years even uncharted 2 was only played twice by me, after that i lost interest! there's just too much focus on online gaming now-days for games to really grab my attention like the games on PS2, i used to play games for hundreds of hours back then, while now i can barely play one game till the end without loosing interest on it.
This gen its all about the graphics and thats something that bothers me allot, cuz they loose the core idea behind a game and thats making it as fun as possible not weather which game has more pixels on it.

jeseth5404d ago

That and games have gotten too easy.

Games are pathetic and its like they are catering to a dumber, less talented gamer. That's why I absolutley adore Demon's Souls...

DaReapa5404d ago

Well said. And I totally agree.

BeOneWithTheGun5404d ago (Edited 5404d ago )

I think for me, the one franchise that never lets me down is Elder Scrolls. I always put hundreds of hours into them. Hundreds.

rezzah5404d ago

MH series is mine, played around 2 thousand or more hours all together.

ChickeyCantor5404d ago

Don't know about your age,
But as you grow older, priorities shift.
And slowly as you play less, your interest drops drastically. Even though we want to play more we can't be bothered much because we have other things to do.
Unless you have a "super duper" easy life.

B00M5404d ago

Think your right. I remember spending hours playing games on PS1. Some I never got bored of, mainly because they were challenging. Games today are now too easy. But recently I haven't had much time to play my PS3 due to joining the Army soon. Even when I have free time as school has ended for me, I dont play PS3. Ive tried a few new demos such as Infamous 2. I just find it boring now. Think Im growing out of gaming. Used to be almost addicted lol.

ChickeyCantor5404d ago

Yeah we kinda get derailed after a while.
but when a game is really good, i do sometimes screw up my priorities xD

B00M5404d ago

Same lol. Skyrim could be one of those games.

caperjim5404d ago

I see your point but the opposite happens also. As a teenager and early 20s i wasnt as interested in video games as i am now. Obtaining a good career and gettin as much tail as possible was my main interest. As time goes on your life gets "settled" and you actually have more time to play games.

B00M5404d ago

Good point caperjim, I will see what happens in my future years lol.

Boring ain't the word.. we all need some new play mechanics/game engine.

yamzilla5404d ago

not on pc, on console yes, but pc and mobile platforms continue to innovate, while 95% of console games are pew pew pew!!!

Laika5404d ago

please stop commenting. you never make any sense. all games this generation on every platform have been perfectly fine

jeseth5404d ago

Don't worry about it. Just shows how few games he really plays.

SkittlesLikesPopcorn5404d ago

actually he is right. console games have little replay value (some exceptions like LBP, and multiplayer games). but with no mods why would u replay it ?

Pc is better for that.

evrfighter5404d ago (Edited 5404d ago )

yup he's actually spot on. In order to make a console game last you need to start throwing cash at the publishers

While on pc, all you need to is have enough space on your hard drive.

for instance i just spent the last few hours browsing and installing mods for new vegas. Ultra quality textures, shaders, weapon mod expansions, new weapons packs etc.

Laika5404d ago

you replay it because its a game and it is fun. and just because you cant mod console games that in no way means this gen and those games are boring. and also the only mod that has kept me coming back is DotA.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio5d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing5d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster925d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit5d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing5d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster925d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
