Sony: We're testing 3D virtual reality games

The forgotten fad of virtual reality gaming may be set for a surprise revival, with Sony confirming to Develop that it is experimenting on the technology within its studios.

I think Virtual Reality is one thing a lot of people will be interested in. I mean, how many people have wanted to feel like they are IN the game?

If Sony can do it, good on them.

But, right now, I dont think the right technology is about. We're close. I mean ive seen demos of mind control with a device, but... its not good enough yet.

EDIT: Lol im editing this post 1 day later because I kept this page up.

But everybody is entitled to their own opinions. Virtual Reality is pretty much the next big thing. I mean, what else is there really?

To think, what comes after virtual reality?!?!?!?!

theonlylolking5411d ago

I will be using a controller or mouse and keyboard until virtual reality comes into gaming and works.

NewMonday5411d ago (Edited 5411d ago )

could this be the PS4?

i think the next generation of graphics can make it possible.

zootang5411d ago (Edited 5411d ago )

Leave it to Sony to try to push things forward. We'd be stuck with DVD and CDs if it was only for the Xbox and Wii.

Yes we know xbox live but its features have been used on the PC for years before Live implemented them.

Rush5411d ago (Edited 5411d ago )

Zootang, you really do have a habit for talking nonsense.

Need I remind you both the Wii and 360 where released before HD-DVD and BluRay was even ready for consumer release?

Also I would like to remind you that love it or hate it, the most revolutionary console this generation was the Wii.

I mean how else do you outsell the PS3 and 360 with a reboxed gamecube?

I mean what did Sony real bring to the table this generation?

A bigger media storage medium and a web browser? Microsoft brought the Online gaming Nintendo brought the motion controlls.

If anything they pushed the game industry far more forward then anything Sony did.

HaHa_Ostrich5411d ago (Edited 5411d ago )

@ Rush
To your question "what did Sony real bring to the table this generation?"
I would say unmatched (quantity/quality) first party software. Thats what matters to me the most. Games. (I know your question was probably more technology/innovation oriented)

kramun5411d ago

@Bender

There's loads of multiplats that are as good or better than Sonys 1st party offerings.

UnSelf5411d ago

these are Sony Fanboy Googles literally

sry i had too

CrazyForGames5411d ago

LOL i find it funny that the only thing anyone could say to rebuttal rushes comments was to say they brought unmatched quality seriously LOL

that's like saying sony quality during the ps1 and ps2 was so bad?
that isn't even a valid point that isn't even something sony brought to the table quality is a subjective term
everyone has quality some more than others

so i agree with rushes comments sony didn't bring anything new or amazing besides a larger storage format
the same thing as the ps2

kikizoo5411d ago

"Leave it to Sony to try to push things forward. We'd be stuck with DVD and CDs if it was only for the Xbox and Wii. "

exactly, always 2 years or more advance over nintendo (home console but also psp, and soon the new one)..
bluray, cell (new and revolutionary : consoles used to be supercomputers), bluetooth and battery in the controler, best motion controler, etc etc..and like every gen (ps1, ps2), best library.

some people are really blind, hate for a brand seem to brainwash them to the point they can't see and accept the reality.

EYEamNUMBER15411d ago

@kikizoo
the irony in your remarks is just so blinding lol

miDnIghtEr5410d ago (Edited 5410d ago )

Rush is completely right.

Kikizoo... pass whatever it is you're smoking.

little big planet 2 -- 92
dc universe -- 67
killzone 3 -- 84
motorstorm apocalypse -- 77
yakuza 4 -- 79
mlb 11 the show -- 90
socom 4 -- 67
white knight chronicles 2 -- 61
infamous 2 -- 83

that is a whopping average this year of the all mighty PS3 exclusives of 77.8.

jony_dols5410d ago (Edited 5410d ago )

It looks like Back to the Future 2 just predicted Sony's PS4!

2015 here we come! (I can't wait to see Jaws 19 on my holographic TV!)

@above:

Factor in Uncharted 3, The Team Ico collection & Resistance 3 at the end of 2011, and show me that metascore then :)

perdie5410d ago

@miDnIghtEr now if your gonna be a fanboy show do that little average thing with the same amount of "exclusives" but for xbox... oh wait those 2 games haven't come out yet...

see I can be a fanboy too its not hard

Staude5410d ago

@Rush, the wii and ps3 were released at the same time in both america and japan. So how could the wii had been released before blu ray was ready if the ps3 was not ?

miDnIghtEr5410d ago (Edited 5410d ago )

Doesn't matter about the 360's exclusives yet. The facts are, so many people have touted the mighty PS3 exclusives this year. And there are the facts on the averages so far. And yes, Uncharted 3 will get around a 93 I'd imagine... R3? Probably an 85 or so.

I can't wait for Uncharted 3. Loved part 2. It's too bad most multi plat games are better than exclusives this year and Gen.

Skyrim, COD, Batman and more... they all say hello.

zak94ma5410d ago

oh yeah ! i love to see that . it will be like a total mind control but if it was good ,who cares !

Why o why5410d ago (Edited 5410d ago )

Midnighter

You kinda owned yourself

Why dont you add up the averages for all the multiplatform games and give us a total and ill be sure you'll find sonys average is higher... Lmao, too easy. exclusives dont all have to be terrific neither do multiplats because if thats your stance you wouldnt of played too many games this year at all. Think of exclusives as an extra choice of games instead of games that have to vie for goty awards. Only people who are unrealistic or fanboys who make stupid comments like yours believe what you're implying. I just like more choice and many of the games you downplay have no better alternative. Show me a better alternative to yakuza or motorstorm. Infamous 2 or lbp 2 therefore irrespective of their score they were the best in their class so to speak. Questionmarks can be drawn over killzone 3 because people may prefer any one of the other shooters but you cannot deny its quality. Ive not listed all of the excluives...i hear there are like 10 plus varying in qulity. They.re just extra game on top of the multiplats that also vary in quality

Rush

Boy, comments that annoy you really bring out the fanboy in you. Sony didnt bring ugc to consoles in a big way or blu tooth peripherals. Cell processor or goty games that utilised it. Blu ray, maybe. C'mon man. Throwing fud at fud just makes a bigger pile of fud

seinfan5410d ago

Yeah, I'd definitely want Matrix-type controls to be a reality.

insomnium25410d ago (Edited 5410d ago )

Oh man I really love your comments why o why. I wish I could give a bubble for "owning". Instead I give you a "well said". I love the truth and you speak a whole lot of it my man.

@rush

Sega brought online gaming on consoles. MS just perfected it and added a pricetag along with it. That IS innovative.

Ravenor5410d ago

I own a PS3, I don't just randomly hate on Sony just cause it's Sony. I just don't believe Sony, MS, Nintendo, Nvidia, AMD and Intel care at all about me beyond the fact that I purchase their products.

I love games no matter the platform, it's a lot of fun. You should try it.

Hell, if the graphics look like The Samaritan or Avatar, the head direction controls the right stick, and you have two Wii-like or Move-like controllers with haptic feedback or even some kind of rumble, I'm all for it. It's the way of the future baby!

1. Wii was successful. Revolutionary? Not on *my* 'book'
2. "Reboxed GameCube" ..I guess your 'revolutionary' console wasn't that 'revolutionary' after all. *IMO* Sony's STILL bringing all the thing that the 'others' forgot and then some. You know like things they[others] couldn't come up with.
3."Microsoft brought the Online gaming Nintendo brought the motion controlls." I believe Sega Dreamcast brought the Online gaming to a console, Microsoft just made it 'mainstream' (?) and about the Wii motion controls** Sony had been developing their motion controls for over 10 years I believe, so I think it's debatable. Nintendo DID launch it first and made it somewhat 'mainstream' [more casual than anything].
4. Funny how you didn't mentioned ANYTHING Sony has done this gen or the past gens [as you went and talked about Microsoft making Online gaming]. I won't talk about Sony's achievements, they don't need me to speak for them.. their work speaks for itself.

**controls NOT 'controlls' as a troll that cons.

Have a great day my gaming brothers.

ECM0NEY5410d ago

Sony sure did bring it to the table...

PS3 launched without a XMB. So when they went to add one to keep up with xbox, they were like "oh crap we only have 512k to work with". With that limited memory and lack on hindsite PS3 still doesnt and never will have crossgame chat.

Honky Kong5410d ago

that was one childish post. i dont care about any of this crap i just came in here cause i knew it would bring out the worst of the worst. i was right

fr0sty5410d ago

assclown, that is quite typical of a post someone with a name like yours would make.

First of all, PS3 did launch with a XMB. From day one. PSP even had one. Xbox never had a XMB, ever. And they never will, it's a sony owned IP. Also, PS3 has 512 MB's of RAM, not 512KB. Guess what? So does Xbox 360. Cross game chat is also featured on Vita, which... You guessed it! ... has 512MB of RAM.

a_squirrel5410d ago

The playstation took us out of the cartridge era, then the ps2 took us into DVD, and now the ps3 has taken us to bluray. I guess ps4 will be virtual headsets?

Anyways, I totally agree.

Also, motion controls were released by sony for the ps2 (not very much support, as no one wanted it) The Wii made it popular. Online was on the Dreamcast first, and also on the ps2 (while you needed an adapter) For some reason, the paid Live service was more popular, because it was more accessible and there were more online games for it.

The Xbox took us into harddrive consoles. Before that we had memory cards.

Hayabusa 1175410d ago

Nintendo came up with the D-pad, analogue sticks, force feedback, and the first portable game console to use touch screen. In fact, I might be mistaken but I believe the gameboy itself was the first portable gaming machine.

MS aren't nearly as innovative, but they did make the first console with a built in hard drive, and regardless of what you say about Kinect's marketing, it's far more innovative then the Move. In terms of online gaming, they added the universal friend list across all games, party chat, lobby systems, matchmaking e.t.c. plus included headsets with every 360.

Sony copied the analogue sticks. Copied vibration feedback. Didn't think online was worth anything until the XBox showed them how it was done. Added last minute motion control in the sixaxis after they saw the Wii, and pretended it was "innovative" when PSone had done the same thing years ago. And when developers gave up on the Sixaxis, they outright ripped off the Wii. And now they're adding touch to PS vita :)

The best Sony has done is push forward the use of discs in games, but even that wasn't new or innovative.

I'm actually not having a dig at Sony. Both Sony and Microsoft are copy cats, but that's fine: they refine technology and bring out it's potential, which I think is key. There are rarely any true "new" ideas in this day and age anyway. But the fact is Nintendo innovates the most, then MS, then Sony.

RedDead5411d ago

I said this the other day, Motion controls come first, if Motion control actually gets perfected/ Then you move onto the 3d image display around your head, simple as that. A kinect which actualy worked and this together would be amazing

specialguest5411d ago

It's not a matter of right technology. It's the high cost that have been keeping virtual reality away from the mainstream consumers. There's a company called i-glasses that have been making head mounted displays with 3D and head-tracking for many years now, but that shit cost at least $1000 with limited software support.

Pedantic915411d ago

But what im wondering is, will Sony release this for the PS3 in an attempt to revitalize the PS3's life (kinda like what MS did with Kinect) in order to have the PS3 stay in the market a bit longer before they decide to reveal the PS4 ?

Or will they release this as an accessory for the PS4 ?

TronEOL5411d ago

PSMove was meant to revitalize the PS3. They wouldn't release 2 different motion controllers for PS3. So my guess (and a very educated one) would be PS4.

Pedantic915411d ago

Forgot about the move -_-'

Well, i guess that leaves the PS4 as the only option for now.

Unless the 3D headset in future is changed only to work for BD 3D movies.

Jdoki5411d ago (Edited 5411d ago )

If you look at Move, it really is a great complimentary technology for use in VR.

Move will not go away with the PS4; and whenever Sony launch VR (if they do) I'll bet it'll work well with Move)

EDIT: And Move was not meant to revitalise the PS3 - because the PS3 didn't need revitalising. It was just another controller. Sony didn't bet the farm on it; it was purely to compete with Wii and support their strategy of 3D (and by the sounds of it VR)

damnyouretall5411d ago (Edited 5411d ago )

vr would be cool. im sure the head tracking would be spot on while looking around the world. add my move shapshooter and id be really down with that. great alt to a big screen tv as well.

DaTruth5411d ago

If I had to sum up the Move strategy, I would have to look at it like Sony telling its fanbase that if they're looking to motion control gaming, don't buy a Wii and spend money on Wii games that could be spent on PS3 games; buy our controller and games!

They obviously didn't pin the future of the PS3 on Move, they hardly even advertise it!

Fishy Fingers5411d ago

More than likely just R&D. I doubt you'll see this at home any time soon. Certainly not by the time the PS4 rolls out.

DaTruth5411d ago

They're probably just covering their asses, so they don't put ten years of R&D into this new product and if someone beats them to the punch by a year or two, they'll be called a clone and ripoff!

a_squirrel5410d ago

No, these things work, and work well, but not good enough. There's still bugs to work out. This is old news.

TronEOL5411d ago (Edited 5411d ago )

I think we pretty much now know what Sony's PS4 Motion controller will be. Take the PSMove tech idea, and apply it to the 3D headset (seen in the picture) and you got gold. I just don't understand how they'll pull it off. Will it be like using the PSVita's camera for their augmented reality games? Or will they make an entire contraption where you can actually experience virtual reality gaming? That's the question.

Anyhow, I'm all for this idea if they do it right and don't pull a "Eyetoy (PS2)". Do tons of R&D before bringing out Virtual reality gaming and try to make it as perfect as possible.

ikkokucrisis5410d ago (Edited 5410d ago )

Yes yes, it will be "welcome to the game grid" all over again!

Imagine playing vehicle sims with this 3D-VR tech:
- Racing inside a premium interior car of GT5
- A game based upon the Tron Legacy Light Cycle sequence
- ANY flying sim (full range of view while in the cockpit, WOW)

This would once again change the face of gaming as we know it!

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.
