Why Has the MASS EFFECT Series Never Been Duplicated?

The Mass Effect series has garnered a huge fan base around the world (including myself) and can easily be considered one of the top current gaming franchises. That being said though, I have to ask why is no other video game studio trying to copy or clone it’s success?

The video game industry is like most other industries in that it is very copy-cat based; the Call of Duty franchise being the best example. We now have hundreds of cloned first person shooters, with some being good others not so much. But if we as an industry are going to move away from originality for monetary reasons, isn’t there money to be had by trying to duplicate some of what makes the Mass Effect series so special?

.
To recreate Mass effect would require substantial resources, skill and passion...all of those are in short supply and with this generation of gaming coming to an end, it's a little late to start from ground zero.

Unfortunately, Mass Effect has changed quite a bit from the more traditional Bioware RPG to a more, user friendly hybrid of TPS/RPG.

EA has ruined Bioware as they will ruin any unique developer in their search for COD like sales and money.

On one hand it's understandable, they need to make money and by law, a publicly traded company like EA has to BUT...

...on the other hand, there are different ways to reach that goal...EA's way is to just copy whatever is the latest trend and that leads to the same old, same old.

Lukas Arts has seen that Bioware has been stealing their concepts that were actually intended for their own IP, Star wars and have said that they will no longer work with EA and Bioware once the current projects are done. I suspect EA will start to lose more and more as the realization that there is no artistic integrity at EA or any of their developers. It's strictly all about dollars and cents now...maybe it always was.

Let me just say this, with Mass Effect going on part 3 for this gen. I really hope this will be the last time we see part 3 of ANY title. You wonder why the sales ( other then COD ) have flat lined for these titles...people have see it all before. The time for a new gen is now.

MysticStrummer5423d ago

I won't start looking forward to next gen until I stop looking forward to games in this gen. I have games to look forward to well into next year. If Sony doesn't show anything new and interesting at next year's E3, then I'll start to think about a PS4. As for ME, I wasn't impressed enough with the ME2 demo to play the full game so... idk and idc are my answers to the title question.

Alpha Protocol?

I know it's not the same atmosphere/theme but it has the basics

NukaCola5423d ago

Mass Effect is the duplicate of Knights of the Old Republic. They took the interface and style of their original RPG masterpiece and transitioned it into this newer scifi sensation. And while I am on it, Dragon Age II is definitely taking a lot from the ME series.

Palodios5423d ago

I hadn't heard about Bioware stealing ideas from LucasArts. But that is interesting.

I just wanted to comment-- when I played Mass Effect the first time, it felt very similar to Knights of the Old Republic. The atmospheres of the cantinas are almost identical. Sure Bioware made both, but my point is that Mass Effect borrows from the Star Wars universe enough on its own to be considered purely original in its own right.

SilentNegotiator5423d ago

Considering that it's becoming more of a TPS with text options, I really don't think making a Mass Effect clone is getting any harder.

I would rather see someone rip off KOTOR than ME.

TheDareDevil5423d ago

Mass Effect isn't as huge as COD. COD regularly sells like 18 million copies, whereas Mass Effect sold around 2-3 mil. Making a Mass Effect clone requires a lot of resources and a great single player story. Even if your game reaches the quality of ME, it will be a smaller %age of ME's sales.
A COD clone, however requires a similar MultiPlayer experience and you can get around 3-4 mil in sales, which is more than the original Mass Effect sold anyway.
Look at Homefront, bad graphics + decent multiplayer + short campaign = 2 million sales in 3 months

Mass effect seriese is overrated...i like it but..no mass effect has come close to doing uncharted numbers... And the seriese is on platforms...thats not good with all the acclaim this series gets

iamgoatman5423d ago

What? Some of us don't speak gibberish.

MerkinMax5423d ago

"watch as this man attempts to compare Uncharted and Mass Effect's sales to make some kind of point."

"FAIL!!!"

"roll the next clip Steven."

RedDead5423d ago (Edited 5423d ago )

I agree Mass Effect is overrated, Uncharted is also overrated though.

Numbers don't speak, Cod has the numbers. Actually I take that back, I love Uncharted 2, but still, not nearly the best game ever. Not close.

I've said this a number of times now but eh, ME has no grounds to be called a RPG, other games which seem closer to the Rpg genre don't call themselves one(STALKER). Because they know at the heart they are not Rpg's. Bioware just don't want to admit it. They're turned away from the Rpg genre. We have genre's for a reason anyway, you wouldn't call "Saving Private Ryan" a thriller would you, imagine if it did. Same with ME2

Also, Mass effect is more comparable to Uncharted than it is too Morrowind. Difference is Mass effect has a mission select screen and some choice's.

Louis_Guzman5423d ago

Mass Effect is indeed overrated and is not as big as the author would like you to think, heck it's not even the best selling rpg this gen. Yes, to be fair, Uncharted is also highly overrated.

TheOtherTheoG5422d ago

Does it really matter how much 'of an RPG' it is? Does it actually affect the quality of the game, whether or not you can call it 'overrated'? Sure, it may not have that much in terms of traditional RPG elements -mind you, it's still closer to KoTOR than Gears in structure - but some of my favourite games of all time, say, Half-Life 2, Portal - don't have any RPG elements at all, does that make them overrated all of a sudden? Does it affect how much you might enjoy the game, possibly, in the same way that I don't really enjoy playing Starcraft, it's not a genre that I'm particularly interested in, but does it make it a worse game than everyone says it is, in actual quality, the definition of 'overrated'? No, in the same way that even though I don't enjoy Starcraft, yet I can still respect that it's one of the best games of all time in it's true quality.

spacedelete5423d ago

its what i was thinking the other day except thinking why there is a lack of platformers on 360 and ps3.
look at super mario galaxy it sold 8 million yet the closest to smg2 is ratchet and clank crack in time which isnt that great anyway. gamers are sick of the fps genre. we want something new and fresh.

Kee5423d ago

Well if someone else were to make a space shooter RPG, then they'd never hear the end of it. People would be in an uproar, much like they were with the uncharted clone. That's not the kind of attention a game developer wants.

They don't want to be seen as a total cash-in company and they want to make their own market by providing original experiences.

DaReapa5423d ago (Edited 5423d ago )

"They don't want to be seen as a total cash-in company and they want to make their own market by providing original experiences."

That holds true...for SOME developers/publishers. Unfortunately, fewer than most.

Lord_Sloth5423d ago

The endless parade of samey FPS titles disagrees with you.

Mass Effect - N7 DAY 2025

Bioware writes: "Like you, we’ve heard the rumors lately. You’ve made it clear you care deeply about what’s next. So let’s start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe."

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed

Like with Fallout, it's starting to feel studios are using TV / Film adaptations when they have no game info to talk about.

toxic-inferno195d ago

I feel the same way.

I mean, how difficult would it be for them to release SOMETHING of substance? Another short trailer? A couple of proper hints? A short story set during the original trilogy, but focused on fringe characters?

Hopefully they're working so hard on the game that they don't have time. But still, with every passing year and so little to show, the franchise will be slipping further and further from people's minds.

Profchaos195d ago

Yeah agree it's almost a cop out since Dev times are 5 to 10 years just throw out a few seasons instead you get them done in a year

jznrpg195d ago

I still haven’t beat Andromeda. I am waiting for a lull of good games in my backlog

P_Bomb195d ago

So the TV show will take place after the OG trilogy. I wonder which ending they’ll use?

Rebel_Scum195d ago

Should’ve just posted a picture of an Elcor saying “regretfully, we have nothing to share.”

Good games but no Phantasy Star?

merlox1090d ago

Why do people forget Phantasy Star? That is one of my favorite RPG series. Another ther good but overlooked series is ,Y's.

ES3 set things off, it's a shame they got greedy and decided to cut corners so the executives could get huge pay days.
