5 Sequels that Surpass the Original.

A brief look back at some of the best sequels ever to be released.

AlienBlaster5453d ago

BioShock really? I mean sure it is a fantastic game and one of my all time favorites but there is no way in hell it is better than System Shock 2. If you played it you would understand why. System Shock games are one of the first games that blended FPS and RPG, and arguably no game after did it better except maybe Deus Ex.

Ser5453d ago

Personally, I enjoyed BioShock way more than System Shock 2.

The atmosphere and characters are what won me over in BioShock.

Darkfocus5452d ago

I doubt you've played system shock 2 then. It's atmosphere and voice acting was much better done and far more eerie. The only thing bioshock has going for it over system shock 2 is the graphics and that's only because its a newer game...

Ser5452d ago (Edited 5452d ago )

@Darkfocus

You can doubt oxygen, Darkfocus, it doesn't mean that you're right.

I have indeed played System Shock 2, (before BioShock, mind you) whether or not you choose to believe me is irrelevant to me.

Also, BioShock's voice acting and atmosphere was far better than System Shock 2's in my opinion.

RankFTW5452d ago

Absolutly no way is BioShock better than System Shock 2. System Shock 2 is the greatest game ever created and I cannot see it being surpassed ever.

MrSpace5453d ago

"While I know BioShock isn’t a direct sequel to anything (and by god, did its own sequel suck), writer and designer Ken Levine likes to argue that it’s a “spiritual successor to SystemShock 2"

See this is why I don't understand why they didn't make BioShock Infinite into it's own franchise and call it something like Areoshock/AirShock. You could call that a spiritual successor to Bioshock, if it's got nothing to do with Bioshock then why call it Bioshock....is it just for the sake of sales.

NukaCola5453d ago (Edited 5453d ago )

Bioshock is like Final Fantasy. It's a name in which each game in the series is set in a different period, with similiar traites that make it unique to the game.

Bioshock 2 should of been called Sea of Dreams, and Infinite was supposed to be Bioshock 2.

I wouldn't call Bioshock a sequel. Spiritual successor: yes, but sequel: no.

_____

I don't agree with a lot of this.

Nightfire wasn't good at all. Agent Under Fire was the only other worthy Bond game.

Rayman 2 didn't compare to it's 2D masterpiece.

Bioshock isn't the sequel to SystemShock 2. That's like trying to say that SotC surpassed ICO.

There is no way in hell Oblivion was better than Morrowind. Oblivion was good, but it was completely repetative and lacked the originality that Morrowind had. One of the greatest WRPGS ever made if you ask anyone.

I'll give you Silent Hill. SH2 was the best of the series.

fr00ty-wizenhymer5453d ago

I agree with everything you said, but I think Daggerfall was better than Morrowind. Both were better than Oblivion though.

Bigpappy5453d ago

I hope this is not saying Oblivion was better than Morrowind.

My first question would be: did he play Morrowind?

Lord_Sloth5453d ago (Edited 5453d ago )

Actually I agree with the claim that Oblivion was in fact superior to Morrowind.

Did he say Morrowind was bad?

Ser5453d ago

I enjoyed Oblivion more than Morrowind. Lock me up and throw away the key!

Morrowind is an AMAZING game, don't get me wrong. I just prefer Oblivion is all.

BitbyDeath5452d ago

Oblivion is a great game but has a massive flaw where every object and enemy levels up with you.

That is actually such a massive hole in the game that i'd consider it to be a bug that never got fixed.

Morrowind did it right and I hope Skyrim fixes this.

ASTAROTH5452d ago

Of couse he played Moronwind... you people always geting to insane conclusions...0_0

MisterMarston5451d ago

Haha! Finally. Thanks Astaroth - I completed Morrowind.

Worst trolling I've seen in months...

I don't know what's worse:

A) Apparently the writer doesn't know what a sequel is.

B) Not only is 007 Nightfire not a "sequel" to Goldeneye, it wasn't even the next Bond game to come after Goldeneye. 007 Agent Under First came out before it on the PS2, and there were PS1 James Bond games like Tomorrow Never Dies and the World is Not Enough.

C) 3 sentences is not enough to explain why a sequel is better than the original.

n to the b5452d ago (Edited 5452d ago )

agree 100% and would add,
D) the writing itself is sh**

btw the expression is 'well-rounded', not "fully rounded", MisterMarston

n to the b5452d ago (Edited 5452d ago )

1st paragraph states no Mario or Zelda sequels because the originals are "iconic". this is immediately followed by the 1st actual entry that states its predecessor "set the bench mark" (which basically means it's 'iconic').

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle46d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg52d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree52d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai52d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.
