A Love Letter To Splinter Cell

DigitalVideoGamer writes, "A nostalgic recounting of the golden days of Splinter Cell. When I first purchased my original Xbox, they already made changes to the controller.
Gone was the mammoth black beauty, the odd, cumbersome design, seemingly meant for a gorilla. Unfortunately, it wasn’t marketed towards Gorillas."

Yep. Both Pandora tomorrow and chaos theory are in my top 10 games of all time.

ilikestuff5421d ago

yep, the game makes me feel like such a badass lurking in the shadows like a ninja and what not

NoobJobz5421d ago

I'm just hoping the next Splinter Cell plays like Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory. Didnt like Double Agent or Conviction. Need the night vision goggles. Need to be able to whistle at a guard then throw a brick in his face. Or shock him with sticky shocker. Hanging upside down and grabbing someone and snapping their neck. Good times.

seinfan5421d ago

@Tompeeper
You could do that in the original xbox version of SCDA. The storyline is similar to that of the PS3 and 360 versions, but it's basically an entirely different game.

St05421d ago

Worth getting Chaos Theory on steam for £3? do people still play multiplayer?

NoobJobz5421d ago

I have no idea whether people still play it online but I would recommend the game. Absolutely fantastic. And for the price, you can't do much better.

coolbeans5421d ago

Pretty much all the main iteration's Splinter Cell MP's are played by many others. PT, CT, DA, and Conviction all have different aspects to them. I could find a game of Double Agent (360) in about a minute; I'm not exactly sure about Conviction since I haven't played that in a while.

St05421d ago

Thanks. Which one would you recommend for multiplayer, Chaos Theory, Double Agent or Conviction?

St05421d ago

Bought Chaos Theory just in time, back up to £6 now

aww yeah I loved those games. I had the first 2 SC games on xbox1.

I remember how awesome SC 1 was when it first came out on xbox. Me and my gamer friend were amazed how awesome it was to be a spy, that and walking through curtains/blinds in the First SC.

BeastlyRig5421d ago

Yeah I really hope the next one will be the best ever made! And on pc to!

BlmThug5421d ago

Double Agent Was A Good Game (Other Than Decision Gimmick). Dont Know Why People Didnt Like It

NoobJobz5421d ago

Because after playing Chaos Theory, expectations were high. If that had been the first game in the series, it might have seemed better. However, Chaos Theory was amazing. It seemed like a step backwards. It just wasn't what people were used to.

bozebo5421d ago (Edited 5421d ago )

Nice article. I have exactly the same feelings for the franchise.

The new splinter cells are still awesome games, but they are just not splinter cell, why would Sam spend 30-odd years perfecting his stealth work only to decide to ditch all that and risk dieing all the time?

Chaos Theory had one of the best single player campaigns I have ever played. Up there with OOT, Perfect Dark, FF7, Halo, CoD1, San Andreas, Morrowind etc. Those games that are just legendary in their single player perfection.

I couldn't play the multiplayer because you aren't allowed inverted aiming as a merc... so I refused to ever play as a merc which lead to lots of ragequitting lol.

Thinking about conviction still makes me rage.

Ubisoft Worked on New Splinter Cell Game That Spiraled Into XDefiant Thanks to Live Service Goals

Ubisoft cancelled the new Splinter Cell project and shifted it into XDefiant, due to live service ambitions.

P_Bomb178d ago

“However, over time, Ubisoft lost interest in the Splinter Cell game and shifted it into something designed to compete with Call of Duty.”

Omfg.

Wonder how many times this kinda thing has happened. The games we lost.

1nsomniac176d ago

How can these people get it so wrong. People really want a new Splinter Cell. Is that because they want a game that plays like another game….. no, it’s because they want a Splinter Cell game that plays like… you guessed it, a splinter cell game. I really cannot comprehend how the people in this industry have become so utterly useless.

CrimsonWing69176d ago (Edited 176d ago )

I hate GaaS so much. Like the whole model, the purpose around why it exists, and how they literally can’t f*cking make a game without it just adds to the mess of it.

BlackCountryBob176d ago

Live service games aren’t for me, though I don’t hate on anyone who decides to try to develop one of these games. However, I really wish some developers would realise not all the games need to be live service.

While I loved the original Splinter Cell trilogy, and Double Agent was good too (everything after that less so), 20 years later it’s bad that Ubisoft hasn’t been able to produce a remake or decent sequel, but I’m even more confused that no other developer has been able to make a decent knock off / spiritual sequel to a series which was so beloved. Surely anyone who tried to Kickstarter a spiritual sequel would blow past their stretch targets in only a few days.

Software_Lover176d ago

Exactly. Just completely remake the first 3 Splinter Cell games with new (better) textures, better lighting, etc etc. Redo some of the cut scenes. Sell them as a trilogy. Make money. It's that simple.

BlackCountryBob175d ago

I can’t work out why they haven’t even done the cheap option of just porting the PS3 era HD Trilogy Collection to PS4, would surely be a licence to print money. While I’d love a proper remaster, especially to add HDR as that would really pop visually with the shadow / light detail, I would settle for being able to play on a modern system (I have a PS3 but the system itself is so sluggish, and the Sixaxis controller so poor, I would always choose a zippy modern port with a PS5 controller).

isarai176d ago

I also hate when a small but super talented studio gambles their livelyhood on a GAAA totle like remedy with firebreak and mucurysteam with spacelords, or united front with triad wars

BlackCountryBob175d ago

If it is a success then I imagine those small companies are now huge companies, but so rare it will happen. What I don’t get is artistically for the development team, once they launch a live service game and it beats the odds to become successful, those devs now are purely focused on how to get more from their players, maintain engagement and find a way to slot in brand partnerships. Have to imagine they would hope the success would mean they have more freedom in future projects, instead they become more creatively unfulfilled than ever

shinXseijuro176d ago

Last good splinter cell was conviction in 08 -09

How??? Would love to hear the pitch.

Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Trailer

The new trailer for the game based series has been released.

Software_Lover263d ago

.................... Man, I thought it was a game. How can Ubisoft sit on this franchise for so long????

Garethvk263d ago

I think they are hoping this Jumpstart the interest in the franchise and brings new people to the game.

victorMaje263d ago

I clicked so fast I didn’t even notice the “a netflix series” in the thumbnail.

Garethvk263d ago

Ubisoft has a movie and television division and they haveban Assassin’s Creed project and others coming to hopefully increase the audiences for their franchises.

Noskypeno262d ago

They've been working on a remake for 5 years, and no updates since they said they're working on it. This and the Tomb Raider game that had a "sort of announcement with one concept art that it's in UE5" back in 2020 are really just taking longer than it needs to. Give us concept art or something. I enjoyed when devs like Bungie would give community updates on their projects and keep the community in the loop even if it's very vague like saying "our buddy Dave here is testing out this gun on this yet to be revealed monster in this secret location that we're working on".

SimpleSlave263d ago

After all these years, we get an animated show... 🙄

shinXseijuro262d ago

So it’s like conviction but animated
