That's the problem with Ubisoft. They talk like the only way to make a quality game is to push the AI further and make it smarter. How about fun gameplay, well-written stories, and a little replayability? Making good games is less about technology and more about the development crew creating the game.

Hell, Assassin's Creed and Far Cry 2 are the only games I can think of they published in the last few years. Yup, a new generation will definitely improve this lot's games!

How quickly the tables have turned. A matter of months ago devs and gamers where quick to say how much life is left in the hardware and the "we don't need a new gen" shouts. Seems that's gone out the window, I'd almost suggest Battlefield 3 was that turning point.

I dunno. Halo has had perfect AI since the original Xbox, so they must be doing something wrong if they think the 360 and PS3 aren't capable of pulling off something similar. Fair enough, if there was more ram available it would be easy to make the AI scale better.

The two things that are limiting creativity at the moment:
360's DVD
The RAM quantity on both machines

Both of them severely restrict the scale and interactivity that can exist in 1 currently loaded scene/environment of a game. The DVD limitation particularly restricts open world games with a fairly flat unique content distribution accross the game progression time or explorable world... like GTA or Elder Scrolls for example. Linear or semi-linear games can solve the issue with multiple disks, but who knows what major gameplay/story changes had to be made or how different the game would have been if disk capacity wasn't going to be a problem.

Give these devs what they need and want. If Crytek need 8Gb Ram, fck it give it to them. These guys are making the games we play. Give them the tools. That said i smell newt gen a comin' there's way too many articles around lately.

Don't forget the huge lack of creativity on their side...

I want new consoles, no doubt about it, 5 to 6 years with the same hardware is long enough, time to catch up with the newest PC hardware again, but don't say you feel extremely limited with those pos games you released lately.

I'm assuming they're mainly saying this since they're started development of a few titles for the WiiU. But at the end of the day for almost all their titles Ubi still work first from the consoles and port to PC later on so I don't see why they're complaining. Sony and MS have surely been developing their next consoles for a while (not saying they're very close to release or anything but they've got to at the very least have their plans set out and I'm sure they're many steps ahead of that) but even then Ubi and every other dev knows that not many can afford to buy consoles in their first year and so their sales will dip from what they would have been if they just went ahead and developed for the current gen. There's obviously some limitations but they've dealt with them for how many years and all of a sudden they're "extremely limited"?

I don't care how much the console is being pushed, but when I was playing Uncharted 2, I was immersed in a world of intense action (especially the scripted destruction parts) and I had A LOT OF FUN!

I don't care if it's scripted, linear, or has baked in shadows or animated water. When it all comes together and immerses you like Uncharted 2 did with me, THAT'S what I care about.

Uncharted 2 was such an excellent game and the most fun I've had gaming on this generation. I would unplug my PS3 from the internet if more games like Uncharted came out. I miss the good old single player adventure games. Tomb Raider used to be some of my favorite games, but Uncharted 2 went so far beyond Tomb Raider that Tomb Raider just doesn't seem very good anymore.

So basically... let the developers do what they gotta do... let 'em use the resources they have and lets hope they work on better story telling and gameplay. Why is gaming these days so much about visuals that people can't have fun playing the game? Like as if great games can't exist if they don't have PC-like mega graphics.

Did anyone read the article? Ubisoft is talking about how the current gen limits the ability to have great AI and graphics and sound, physics etc. It can only have great graphics currently.

Might want to iron out all the glitches in your games before you say all this. I've never played a Ubisoft game that didn't hard freeze at certain points or after certain button presses.

The hardware may be hitting a peak but the limitation actually brought about different ways of developing. Look at the first Xbox 360 games compared to modern games like Gear of War 3, Halo Reach, and Modern Warfare 3. The graphics and features continue to improve. I have not seen one Ubisoft game come even close to the graphics or features of the blockbusters so they need quit whinning and learn how to develop better. I think the release of the next-gen in 2 year will be at the proper point.

When they say limited I assume they mean graphics right, that being said ND & GG are scratching their heads at that statement. Surly you are only limited buy your imagination when it comes to creating a great game, so Ubisoft, maybe your limitations aren't with consoles.

So PS3 and 360 are to blame for the bad controls in Farcry 2, what about the awful framerate in the PS3 version of Splinter Cell: Double Agent. It seems to me Ubisofts only limitation is their developers lack of motivation to put out a polished product. If I remember correctly most of Ubisoft's titles have always suffered from bad AI.

Curent console games look great don't get me wrong, but with 512 Meg of ram and and CPU and gpu technology from around 2004, if a console was built now with a half decent budget, it would blow you away in the hands of a decent deveoper.

PS3 hasn't hit it's peak. Developers ALWAYS say that and then you hear that they found new ways to use the SPU's. And the Uncharted 2 to 3 graphical jump is irrelevant. They aren't trying to wow you with graphics anymore they already did that. They are trying to perfect the gameplay and most importantly to them, the multiplayer. Ubisoft can suck one if anything its the Xbox's DVD discs that are holding them back!

Yet developers always find ways to get more out of a platform. To be fair Ubisoft haven't come out with an ORIGINAL concept in a long time, I think it is their imagination that is as limited as anything.

UBisoft is correct xbox360 and the PS3 is coming to an end in term of Graphics and hardware performance. Take a look at Gears of wars 1 and 2 vs Gears of Wars 3; you will see a big difference.Epics game developers used Better lighting effects,Better usage of Polygons & texture maps, and more realistic graphical tricks, and longer running effects. And to achieves this level of graphics means they had to push the system to the Max. So I don't think we would see anything better than the last Gen games(uncharted 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Kill-zone 3, Modern Warfare 3, Resistance 3, etc) That being said, I would say that the xbox360/PS3 has about one year life left in my opinion.

when multiplatform developers can make their games look like Uncharted or Heavy Rain on both consoles then i believe it... only game on both platforms that look amazing is RAGE.. i think having graphics up to that level and 60 fps should be the goal.. not having a game such AC made by ubisoft running on sloppy framerates..

Are developers looking for excuses to be out of a job? Look at the state of the industory caused by this gens hardware. Development costs are high and if a game dose not sell over 1 million the IP is dropped and the studio is closed do. We are seeing less and less exclusive games form 3rd party developers because they dont want to make the gamble.

Plus since when do graphices make the game fun to play. Yes game look amazing now but thats not why we play games we play them because of how they make us feel. Look at the top selling games this gen. Halo, GT5, Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Wii sports mario Kart, COD. All sold more than any other games this gen. Now look at games like KZ2 & 3 UC2, Motor Storm 2 & 3, Alan Wake, BFBC2. All look better than the other games of the same gore but did not sell as well as the less wow looking game. Why because of how it makes people feel when playing them.

I really hope the next xbox and Playstataion are not announced for another 2 to 3 years are I think a new gen before then will cripple a falling games industry.

When these dev mention this its referring to not so much graphics but physics, advanced lighting and interaction with the environment...with high level graphics. All in one package.
BF3 is showing that these consoles are indeed old and aging. This is the first game to have this all in one package looking the way it does...on the PC. With full destruction.

You can make an amazing and I mean amazing looking game on the PS3 and Xbox360, YET to have a game look like Uncharted 3, God 3, GEARS OF WAR 3 OR KZ3, then have a full Dynamic Real Time lighting engine; Real Time Soft Shadow effects; Eye Adaptive Higher Floating Point HDR running in Real Time with Real Time global Illumination in conjunction with a Dynamic Procedural Destructible Environment running also in Real Time is NOT possible on these consoles.
These consoles SIMPLY cannot do this.

Developers WANT to add these graphical/Effect features in their games but cannot because the PS3 and Xbox360 lack the hardware to do these things fully like a PC can...even a MID-Range PC costing under $900 can do this.

There is NO Exclusive game for ANY console that is rendering what the Frostbite2.0 engine is doing on the PC. Everything running on the PC Frostbite2.0 engine is running in Real Time. The same why the Cryenegine 3 ON THE PC is running all the effects in REAL TIME.

The console versions of BF3 and Crysis 2are not running most of the effects in real time as compared to the PC version. There had to be major compromises or those games on the consoles would run well under 30fps almost to single digit frame rates.
Not even considering or mentioning the lack of DX 11 effects/support the Xbox360 and PS3 has; effects and hardware features that can increase texture detail greatly through Tessellation that these consoles can never ever achieve due to 512 megs of memory and lack of Advanced Tessellation support in Hardware...
And some of these texture heavy PC games out now and coming out use more than 512 megs of memory for just textures alone in games.

Developers are saying they don't want to make those compromises anymore. That's why they are bitching LOL

Not enough Bandwidth...or memory and aging CPU's/GPU's are the reason for console games being gimped this way.
It's not excuses from developers. It's just simple MATH and FACTS.
Less memory and bandwidth and procession power are the reasons.
