I think Sony doesn't need to produce a new console... if they make the proper updates through Software updates the console will be fine. We still have beautiful games being made and from what every publisher has said "the full potential hasn't been unlocked yet. I honestly don't believe that BF 3 mess. As long as they find ways to improve visiuals and help gameplay improve on the console then I believe the PS3 might because to hold its own even if Microsoft and Nintendo both release their own new consoles. If sony does choose to release a PS4 before 2016 I think it will be must more powerful than the competition. I just hope they make sure everything is fixed up properly before release

The real question that needs to be answered is

"Is it possible to effectively manufacture a PCB with a decent DX11 GPU and a modern CPU with enough RAM and other essential components while maintaining temperatures with custom cooling solutions in a condensed space, a fraction the size of a modern gaming PC. All at a price that would attract consumers (AKA not over $599)?"

Now I know it is possible to have a $599 custom built PC that can run DX11 games, etc.. But will that PC run those games with settings on high while maintaining respectable frame rates? I mean that is what it's all about right, the visuals and play-ability when it comes to high end PC gaming.

Consoles will probably never match the PC at any given time when it comes to graphics, etc... Only because the PC market changes so frequently and a ton of research and development has to go into answering my first question. Why do you think such an old GPU model was used for the current gen? To maintain temps upon load, etc...

In my honest opinion, the PS3 has shown me games that in some instances blow away what I would expect from a PC built with the same specs as the PS3. Why? Because developers for the PS3 can code graphical operations on the CPU, PC developers do not have the same liberty to do that with all their games since they can not focus on one GPU/CPU combination. Not saying they couldn't, but I bet it would take a long time to code the game specifically for each GPU/CPU combination to get the best optimization.

The cash needed to run Crysis 2 vs PS3 for me ainth worth it...and it has nothing to do with not having the money...it's just not worth it..

We will need a PS4 in probably 3-4 years. The longer the better in my opinion. Looks almost identical. You can notice the difference though. Still nothing too drastic.

Plus some of the comparisons are not in the same locations and not always looking at the same objects, just look at the mini maps.

Seriously too many gamers nowadays are graphics whores. Does it really matter which one looks better its the same game. I don't care if a game doesnt look photo realistic as long as it fun to play I play it. Look at the Uncharted series yeah the graphics are great but it goes beyond that. It has a cinematic qualiy that few games produces.Developers need to brush up on their story telling skills instead of worring some much on graphics. Alot of games nowaday look good but their story is garbage.

One or Two games that go beyond the graphic capabilities for consoles doesn't mean "ZOMG NEED NEWZ CONSOLZ!". Sure there's various graphical differences but Crysis 2 is still playable on the 360 & PS3.

However its not as simple as releasing new consoles and expecting amazing graphics. Not every developer will be able to utilize new hardware, not to mention it takes years to develop new tools for the Studios. So lets say next year Xbox 720 or PS4 came out, it still would be around 2 years after that before you start seeing truly stunning games that actually access a system power.

But to be fair, its not like every PC game coming out these days are benchmark crushing machines. You could say that for the PC industry has slowed down on High end PCs. So sure, people are quick to blame Consoles for that but the truth is rather on what consumers are buying these days. Walk in any store where PCs are sold and you'll see a mountain of Laptops and Tablets. Only a small handful of Desktops are available and even less with decent stats.

I personally am in no rush to buy any new console. I still want to wait a few more years before I buy any new hardware.

Cryengine 3 is a DX9 console engine that can be easily ported to PC. It's sole purpose was to make games for the consoles with super duper quality in mind.

The DX11 in Crysis 2 is stapled on and is not that great. So therefore sure the PC version looks better not because of the DX11 but because the PC has more power to display more richer and colorful textures plus better physics PERIOD If the PS3 had more ram and a real GPU then there would be no difference.

CryEngine 3 one day will kick ass when they modify the code and inject DX11 into the base of it and not just glued on. Actually i should say run DX11 natively and not as an add on

Can someone get better screen shots? That is the worst one I have seen. The first one is a close up view for PC and PS3 its far back and more looking to the right.

I don't see much to say PC looks really better, I can see more details on things. But not much, but most people go with console because they don't have the money to build a PC to play most PC games on high.

Yes, we need a new generation of consoles, sooner rather than later.
It's all well and fine that the current ones can pull off graphics that don't fall too far short of PC in screenshot comparisons, but that means running those graphically intensive games at 720p or less (and this low resolution is definitely a bit more obvious in its flaws on my new 51" TV compared to my old 40") - vs. the typically 1680x1050 or higher PC gamers will be using on much smaller screens - and far too often at shaky framerates that frequently dip into the mid or even low 20s (even my aging gaming PC with a Geforce GTX 260 can manage 1920x1200 at 40-60 fps in most games).

And that's before adding 3D to the mix. Killzone 3 is a fantastic looking game in 2D, but I was sorely disappointed when I first fired it up in 3D when I bought my 3D TV a month ago and was exposed to something that - despite it's impressive 3D depth - frankly looked way too much like a low resolution mess full of jagged edges.
The Uncharted 3 beta fares better in 3D, but it still has some visual trade-offs compared to the 2D version.

You can hardly say the PS3 by talking about multi-platform title which was originally designed for PC gaming. Game like God of War III look simply amazing on PS3 (way better than this) because it was designed and produced for the PS3.

Graphics have not made the revolutionary jump they are usually known for over a 5 year cycle. For once consoles are not as far behind pc in terms of graphics as they have been every other year in gens gone by. Pc fanboys will argue till there blue in the face, but facts are facts, and fact are that graphics have kind of stagnated for the past few. And now PS3 is being opened up a bit more, & showing where that extra grunt has been hiding that xbox fanboys have denied it having, the PS3 is actually showing it can come a lot closer to pc graphics than most thought possible,....now even though the pc fanboys keep crying foul about BF3 running sub par hd, it has actually been proven since in several articles on N4G's that it is in fact running in proper hd, albeit a slightly lower pixel count than the pc version. Fact is, pc fanboys will be crying in there laps, as you won't be able to tell the difference, especially whilst playing & enjoying this awesome game. Then, look at Rage running at 60fps, with it's awesome graaphics & sick looking levels & gameplay, as well as MW3 also sporting 60fps & top notch graphics. These consoles haven't been outdated enough at all to require new consoles immidiately, as they have plenty of life & games left in them yet, & PS3 looks to be pulling ahead of 360 at a faster & faster rate, & I hope that 3rd parties start to have a bit of a go at unleashing more power from the PS3 & using smarter programming to get the most from this powerhouse little machine, as PS3 owners deserve it, Sony deserves it for building such a great machine, & developers deserve it & owe it to themselves to push as hard as possible to get the best from a machine, as it is sure to help them when the next gen machines are unleashed upon us lucky consumers....which I hope & believe will be late 2012. Yep, I could handle buying a fully backwards compatable, (blu ray using, 4 stickytaped together cells powered) PS4 & 5-6 games, for Christmas 2012. Would be a great strategical move if Sony hammered the PS4 out by next X-mas. Think about it, beating MS to the market & either being in line with Wii-U's release, or at worst only a couple of months later to market, as opposed to the 18+ months with 360 to PS3. Also, as Sony has stated, they hardly need to spend anything compared to what they did with PS3. I mean, I have been Sony's biggest fan with there approach in using a new media with every machine, PS1=cd, PS2=dvd, PS3=blu-ray....but, I must say, there new machine is the only time I say they really don't need to, they would be silly not to use blu-ray again with PS3's successor, A) because blu-ray can hold up to 200gig's on last count that I heard & someone has probably outdone that now, & B) Disk formats are about to become a thing of the past once Sony, MS & Ninty are sure that well enough of the popula, have access to internet, or a fast enough version of it.

All Sony has to do with PS4 is use a much faster Blu-ray reader, use the version of cell many speculate they have going, which is basically just 3 or 4 cell chips in one, put in a very capable cooling fan/s or system, have a graphics card custom built by one of the top 2 that is as future proof as possible....now the rest is just the bibs & bobs, but I think Sony should do these 2 things to help ensure they kick some butt this time, from the offset, & one is that they should make these small changes to controller 1. Leave anologue sticks in same position but just concave in the tops of the sticks, so your thumbs sit down into the sticks. 2. Add a bit more wing size to it, so it looks like the baterang PS3 prototype controller they showed off early then canned (it did look awesome apart from small changes it needed). 3. Make the triggers biggers & more like a trigger, and just place them right & in conjunction with L1 & R1, so all 4 can be used with ease & comfort, without the need for moving ones hands. 4. Add extra 2 buttons onto face, 6 buttons on face for fighters is a must & would be great addition to DS4. And moving from controller, add FULL backwards compatability to PS4 to make up for the terrible decision to axe it so early into PS3's lifespan which hurt sales IMO & also affected customer trust. Adding full b/c to PS4 would be a great & smart step for Sony with PS4, as it would give PS4 early adoptors (like myself I'd say) the chance to finish off some of the great PS3 games I'd either never got round to playing, or had started but never got round to finishing. This full b/c, as well as a new version of psn that has X-game chat, party options, more friend options such as obvious things like being able to join any friends game just by logging on, seeing what there playing, loading up yours & hitting join friends game from the xmb bar, as well as the little unimportant things like custom soundtracks for all games, & just do all those things that Xbox 360 fanboys don't want PS machines to have so they can act like school girls because Sony's machine don't have it, would be great. Just add all those things most of us don't care about & will barely use, to shut up dopey fanboys. But, things like X-game chat & easily joining friends, & party invite systems are all useful that I use on my 360, & definately believe if PSN had them, then Live users would have no legs to stand on, saying Live is better.

We don't need a PS4 yet, the difference would be pretty minor compared to ps2 > ps3. why? games price, to be able to achieve greater graphics, it also needs more money to develop. so even if ps4 gets released today the difference would be minor.

We have yet to max out the consoles as I see it. Killzone 3 just came out a couple of monthes ago and it is quite a bit better looking than Killzone 2. Gears 3 is about to come out and by whats been seen so far it is quite a bit better looking than Gears 2. Uncharted 3 is coming out soon and so far it looks as though it will look a lot better than Uncharted 2. Forza 4 is coming out soon and for sure it looks a lot better than Forza 3. So until we see these games and others not changing for the better graphically, we hane not maxed out the current consoles. Do some PC titles look better than all these games? Yes but is it enough to hope for an early new generation of consoles? I think not.

It doesn't make the game any less sucky, so no, we don't really NEED a new anything.

Im not too excited for a new console if it isnt upgradable. In a year or two after launch it will be outdated as usual without the ability to upgrade. I think i'll stick with PC this time around.

ps4 is not coming any time soon, so if you want something more powerful get a pc, companys cant even make as many games as they use too like the last generation because it cost alot more to make games, so if they make the ps4 there will be even less games and less companys to make them, so ps4 would be basically a pc really powerful and very little games i rather take more games and i think the graphics of this generation of games are amazing, i did grow up playing atari, sometimes i pause while playing games like uncharted 2 and just realize how much gaming has evolved

Crysis 2 was downgraded to run on consoles. The PS3 is nowhere near as powerful as even a budget PC.

Playstation 4 won't use proprietary code nor dose it need to because proprietary code restricts & limits any platform maximum performance & capabilities.Also all playstation platforms have always been open platforms & use open source code & always will & i wouldn't want it any other way.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.
