Has Handheld Gaming Lost Its Way?

MMGN.com writes: When it comes to handheld gaming the industry seems to be overly cautious right now; with the recent release of the Nintendo 3DS failing to spark the successful sales of its predecessor and the ever increasing install base of iOS and Android devices one has to question the viability of a dedicated gaming platform.

i will never use that garbage called the ipad or iphone. maybe android by from the games ive played they are all crap and boring.

3ds and vita will be the future of handhelds, these multimedia machines are just killing gaming. i choose to carry my DS and android. because gaming on a phone is horrible it gets hot in 15 mins and b4 you look your at 50% battery playing 2d crappy games imagine a game that took real processing. if thats the future of portable i want no parts.

Have you played a game like Infinity Blade? It uses the Unreal 3 engine and is just as good looking as a console game, or RAGE for iPad is another that is amazing. I wouldn't discount the iOS platform just yet.

ipad is not a gaming device y'know?

ah, whatever, these guys don't stop shitting with their fingers even if the whole world asked them to stop...

Has Handheld Gaming Lost Its Way?

"I’m not saying that there isn’t a place for handheld gaming devices, but I think Sony and Nintendo need to take a good hard look at the appeal of Apple before they lose the entire market to the App store.

I notice the trend in sticking Sony along with Nintendo in this, Problem but you see that is very Silly because the very problem these people are asking Sony is already taking Steps that Has the Solution.

Why are they deciding to IGNORE THE "PLAYSTATION SUITE"

Sony is putting the "PLAYSTATION SUITE" ON AS MANY DEVICES AS THEY CAN.

EXAMPLE:

BACK IN JAN 2011

"There are a variety of operating systems, but we're focusing first on Android," the Sony Computer Entertainment boss said in a conference this month, as Eurogamer reports.

"There's also Windows, iOS and so forth, but we don't have the resources to make it compatible with everything from the start."

notice these word's-

"from the start"

"We're not ruling out PSS even on products like Sony Internet TV Powered by Google [Google TV] if adoption rate increases, or if it will help push adoption greatly. We have a completely open stance with carriers and handset makers." -Sony boss Kaz Hirai

Example # 2

Thanks to this entirely new initiative, users will be able to enjoy PlayStation content on an open operating system for the first time in PlayStation history.

In the dramatically evolving and diversifying mobile market, the number of users who enjoy games casually on a variety of devices including mobile phones, smart phones and tablet PCs, has been increasing significantly. By offering quality PlayStation content to this rapidly growing market, SCE will not only deliver the PlayStation experience to a wider base of users around the globe, but will also be able to offer game developers and publishers the potential to further expand their business opportunities to these devices

DOES THAT FREAKING SOUND LIKE SONY IS IGNORING THIS MARKET
MOVEMENT?

OR HOW ABOUT:

go here:

http://blog.eu.playstation....

what's the first thing their showing?

http://blog.eu.playstation....

The Freaking Xperia-Play a smartphone..On the official Playstation Blog

Sony is putting out

Xperia-play
S1 tablet
S2 tablet
an The PSVita all run the "Playstation Suite"
that does not Include the fact that Tegra 2 an 3 is also "Playstation Suite" certified

that can run games like Desert Winds as an example

This Statement once again:

"I think Sony and Nintendo need to take a good hard look at the appeal of Apple before they lose the entire market to the App store."

yea because Sony is not looking at that Market..right?

""There's also Windows, iOS and so forth, but we don't have the resources to make it compatible with everything from the start."

We have a completely open stance with carriers and handset makers." -Sony boss Kaz Hirai

You can now stream games from your Xbox to your iPhone

The latest version of the Xbox Beta app on iOS is here and includes one thing that xCloud can’t do – stream Xbox games to your iPhone. There is one catch though, you actually need to own an Xbox.

It's called Remote Play. Something Sony already did to allow games to be streamed to your phone. If Microsoft would have started here first with RP, would have been less problems for them than trying to go around another company's policies and cutting Apple out of their cut of the money on the platform they own.

Still no Xcloud.

headshotfrosty2072d ago

So has Xbox....just on Android. This is now on iDevices...That's the point here sir.

NeoGamer2322072d ago

Microsoft has had remote play for years.

Tacoboto2072d ago

No, Xbox Remote Play only started on Android during the Game Streaming beta earlier in the year.

But OP is still jaded - this has nothing to do with Apple's policies or Sony or even xCloud. Though he seems to fully endorse Apple's discrimination of gaming services when they don't apply those same restrictive policies onto other streaming platforms (Netflix, Hulu, etc)

@tacoboto

Remote Play has existed about year and a half... Maybe more

NeoGamer2322072d ago

@Tacoboto
I have streamed from my XB since late 2014 to my PC.

Tacoboto2072d ago

https://www.engadget.com/xb...

It only started on Android out of beta last week. The best I can find for PC is that it's officially in-home network only but there are ways to make it accessible over the internet through router changes, through the Xbox Companion App (never knew about this feature)
