MS: Xbox 360 'about halfway through' its lifecycle

Xbox 360 is about "halfway through" its lifecycle, estimates Xbox's EMEA VP, Chris Lewis.

thank's to kinect of course if that didn't 'succeed' then no doubt we would see the new xbox next year or maybe early 2013.

on the other hand i'm happy the current gen isn't finishing just yet, I wan't them to release the new console when graphics can take another big step. which at this rate could be in about 3 or 4 years.

banned_nope5453d ago

if 360 is halfway, then wii is on the sunset while ps3 has just starting.

Wizziokid5453d ago

hense wii U and PS3 will have more life than the 360 because of the hardware but they will go into the next gen around the same time either way.

unlike Nintendo who go in early

Rifkens5453d ago

And the PC still has its foot on top of the consoles faces :)

Active Reload5453d ago

How come Drake looks the same?

DragonKnight5453d ago

@Rifkens: With the exception of my taking the time to tell you this, no one cares. Consoles have vastly superior game offerings you won't see on PC.

Joe29115453d ago

@wizzo

What kind of big step are you expecting? This gen has given us pretty stunning graphics already, I mean they could make everything play at 60fps and 1080p but would it actually change the visual style of games.. no.

I really struggle how to think they could push graphics much further. Better textures maybe and higher resolutions. What do I know, I have no idea how these guys (devs) do what they do, its pretty amazing to me.

nickjkl5453d ago (Edited 5453d ago )

because in uncharted 2 they were using a model at around 40k polygons which is really high by todays standards even up there with crysis and during the cutscenes they use upto 80k and yet people still couldnt see the difference between the two

what they need to do with uncharted 3 is focus on lighting and physics textures and effects

after all theres only so much you can do with polygons till your just wasting resources trying to make a perfect circle which isn't going to happen

Dramscus5453d ago

In the way WAY back machine maybe.

LostDjinn5453d ago (Edited 5453d ago )

It's Xbox's EMEA VP. What did you expect him to say?

"Yeah the 360 really hit the wall. We had to go casual."?!

Seriously, it's his job to talk up the 360 no matter what the truth of the situation is (good or bad). This is just meaningless PR BS.

I would say the 360 is about 75%ish perecent through.
The ps3 is around 65% or so

The reason: Both are going to be getting stuck by hardware I.E - The graphics cards in each machine will limit graphical output.
Both processors are powerful enough to go longer, but the graphics cards will limit more than anything else.

rabidpancakeburglar5453d ago

It's nearing the end of it's lifecycle not halfway through. There will be a new console in late 2013 or early 2014

dirthurts5453d ago

Just because a new console comes out, doesn't mean the 360 won't keep going. Look at the PS2.

zootang5453d ago

Would it not make more sense to compare it to the Xbox? Which lost support once the 360 was released.

rabidpancakeburglar5453d ago

Fair enough but consoles generally lose a lot of support when the newest one comes out.

dredgewalker5453d ago

I honestly think that MS is gonna keep the 360 a while longer even if they release a new console. If it still makes money why would they just drop it? The reason they dropped the original xbox is that it didn't perform as much as they would have liked and it was more expensive to manufacture (though it was built rock solid).

silvacrest5453d ago

you could also say, look at the original xbox....

karl5453d ago

its easy guys... the 360 wont just die in two years....

but it will stop being relevant

dirthurts5453d ago

There are way too many 360 owners for MS to simply drop it for a new one.
The original xbox had a fairly small audience at the time, it didn't make sense to keep it.
But at this point, not everyone will jump on a brand new console, which I'm sure will release at a high price.
It makes sense to support the original 360 as long as they can, as long as people keep buying games, it will stay around.

theIMP5453d ago

OK Zoo and Silva, we could look at the original Xbox and its success, and then look at how much more success the 360 has had, then go by that, right? Please don't act so clueless, it just makes you look more bias than you already do. Do you really think they would not support something that is making them so much money? Why do you think they scraped support for the original Xbox? See isn’t thinking fun?

dcbronco5453d ago

Obviously there still people out there that don't understand why MS dropped the original Xbox. To make it easy for those I will put it to you like this. If the Xbox was still around, it would still cost MS more per console to make than it does for them to make the 360 now. Nvidia and Intel refused to give them price breaks. They own the major parts of the 360. That is why it is very profitable for them and that is why it will continue to get support. And opening it to new markets is the reason Kinect extends it's life.

creatchee5453d ago

The original XBOX died after the 360 came out because Microsoft did not own the hardware inside of it. It did not make sense to continue to support it at that point and potentially lose market share.

Considering where Microsoft is now, they made the right decision from a business standpoint.

subtenko5453d ago

lol they kinda say halfway becuz of kinect, other than that, they are pretty much finished. Look at its timeline, its just slowing down

ImHereNow5453d ago

the 30% YoY increase says Hi

firemassacre5453d ago

interesting, casual gamers will get the other half of the support.

silvacrest5453d ago

im sure thats not what they meant but what you said is the reality of the situation

Wikkid6665453d ago

Doesn't mean a new console isn't in the near future. Just means that they will continue support the 360.

subtenko5453d ago

Just like they did with xbox, oh wait....

M$ can be real sneaky. I will never forget what they did. Sure its a tactic to make everyone switch to the 360 (in switch the did successfully) BUT, that was just mean.., Sony on the other hand still supports ps2 to this day.

So I dont like what M$ did, Im wondering if they do make a new console will the drop the old console like they did with xbox. even if they dont, Im still skeptical on buying the next M$ gaming console. Not gonna rush out to buy it

Wikkid6665453d ago

I really don't think it was tactic to make people buy 360s... more likely a MS division fighting to stay above water, so they couldn't divide their resources. In others words they were putting all their eggs in one basket... which paid off.

First off, there are too many 360s out there to do that this time.

Secondly, my money is on the next MS console will be 100% backwards compatible.

Aarix5452d ago

The original xbox didn't get much success to support it for very long. The 360 is in a whole other league.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
