I'm not a big fan of 3D. Mostly because I don't like wearing glasses over my glasses and it gives me headaches.

EYEamNUMBER15457d ago

3DTV isn't really going to take off until they make cheap glasses free 3DTV's wont really happen for a while though until then 3DTV's are gonna be somewhat stale in terms of adoption

fr0sty5457d ago

They do already have those passive 3DTVs that use the movie theater style polarized glasses. Those things are cheap enough to give away by the buckets with the tv's, and replacing them is so cheap it won't be a big deal for the average user.

Xof5457d ago

That's never going to happen. The "glasses-free" 3D optical illusion is too dependent on the distance of the viewer from the screen and the viewing angle. It can only really work with a handheld, because there's only ever one person viewing the 3D at a time (and because the angle and distance are easy to alter).

With a television, things are much difficult, especially when you consider multiple people viewing the same image at the same time. The ONLY currently viable method is glasses. And there are many, many downsides--the duplicate imaging has an adverse effect on game performance (lower fps, inability to properly AA stuff) and many people find the glasses cumbersome.

Particularly people like myself and *sigh* buttclown.

The simple fact of the matter is that 3D media entertainment, as it exists today, is simply a gimmick. The "3D Revolution" -- the next big innovation in how we percieve our film and games... that's years away: that's when we have televisions capable of projecting high-definition, high-contrast holographic images.

It'll be cool as hell once it gets here, but that's decades away. Until then, current "3D" technology is little more than a gimmick and no matter how popular it gets, will never be anything more than a passing fad.

"Particularly people like myself and *sigh* buttclown."

I LOL'd.

@ xof

"The "3D Revolution" -- the next big innovation in how we percieve our film and games... that's years away: that's when we have televisions capable of projecting high-definition, high-contrast holographic images."

And how do you suppose we get to that technology without the current technology. All technology is transitional, think of it as evolution.
Also, why is current 3D technology a fad and the future "televisions capable of projecting high-definition, high-contrast holographic images" not?
People used to think television was a fad when it first hit the market. In those days TVs were black and white so perhaps the then critics of tv saw black and white tv as a fad and were holding out for colour sets. Or perhaps the people that thought it was a fad were wrong.

"It'll be cool as hell once it gets here, but that's decades away. Until then, current "3D" technology is little more than a gimmick and no matter how popular it gets, will never be anything more than a passing fad."

Perhaps all technology is a "passing fad", once a technology is superceded it tends to becomes obsolete.

@frosty

Eyeamnumber1 is talking about cheap 3dtvs that don't require glasses, not 3dtv with cheap glasses.

socomnick5457d ago

Correction.

3dtv is never going to take off, its already declining.

People that own 3d tvs are not even watching 3d content.

This is just a dead money pit for gaming and for the film industry.

Just kill it.

buttclown5457d ago

I love how people find my name funny, and yes it's intentionally that way.

And to the 3D perspective, I think it will get better but not really revolutionize anything or get the kind of support anything mentioned above.

GrandTheftZamboni5457d ago

I bought a 3D TV last December and I don't watch much TV either 2D or 3D, but from what I've seen if every movie or game looks as good as Imax Deep Sea or Super Stardust HD, then we'll have 3D revolution. There were freaking fishes all over my living room. There is hardly any artifacts in those two, unlike some other 3D media.

It isn't for everyone. Some have sensitive eyes and get headaches easily, and will tire of 3D after a few minutes. But for those of us that can enjoy it comfortably, it really does enhance things like gaming. Movies, not so much. More there for "wow" factor than anything in movies (so far, I haven't seen someone make use of 3D in a film that wasn't just there for the sake of throwing things in your face). But for gaming, it does offer a strategic advantage. we game in 3D worlds, to be able to see them as they are rendered is nothing but a good thing.

the fact that not everyone can enjoy it doesn't mean it won't take off though. Not everyone can see clearly enough to enjoy the benefit of HD. some people are color blind, so color TV isn't as useful to them. some people are just blind, so TV isn't very useful to them. Deaf folks don't care for surround sound. But neither of those limitations stopped those technologies from succeeding. I do admit that 3D appeals to a much more niche market than any of those others to though.

buttclown5457d ago

I think you stated it best saying that it's a much more niche market. I believe if they push it hard enough and they are, it will take off. Right now though it's just a lot of investment

TheDivine5457d ago

I think the opposite, 3d is great for a movie here and there but not great for gaming. Its awesome but not really good for long 5 hr plus gaming sessions. I like it for an hour or 2 max occasionally. Its like an added bonus that will get used on special occasions, not daily tv and gaming. I will say that i really do love it on the 3ds, perfect for a handheld (1 person) and its great without glases. Its a plus u can turn it up, down, or off.

evrfighter5457d ago

I can see 3d just fine. But its nothing compared to high res high fps gaming

baodeus5457d ago

a problem would be standardizing the 3D glasses. Every company has their own propriatary glasses to go with their TV (supposedly only work on their tv). It doesn't make sense.

theIMP5457d ago

To be honest as cool as it is to watch for a few minutes, I realistically don't see too many people watching TV with those glasses on all the time. I also had issues with blurry vision for 30 min's or so after I was done as well. That part of it I really, really, didn't like at all. I, unfortunately, am one of the people that gets headaches from it. I tried it out a few times to make sure because I really wanted to get a 3D TV, but for me it's just not worth it. While it is very cool, I don't think people would ever make it the main way they view any kind of programming.

baodeus5457d ago

yeah that is also another issue. Our eyes aren't used to watching things in 3D and could put a lot of stress on the eye in that case. Nonetheless, some are pretty cool with 3D, like Kung Fu Panda for example. I thought it looks great in 3D compare to non 3D. It seems 3D looks good for animated movies, but usually doesn't work well with real life movie though.

SaiyanFury5457d ago

I tried it, and while I find it mildly interesting, when I tried 3D, within 5 seconds it started giving me what would become a splitting headache. I won't be getting anything with it, if it had that rapid an effect on me.

bunt-custardly5457d ago

This is not 3DS. I've been looking forward to 3D, but after Sony recent 2-player split/full screen showing I'm intrigued to hold out that little bit more.

madjedi5457d ago

I wonder if that isn't a new technology or line they introducing slowly or more specifically targeted at a lower income crowd that wants 3d, i am curious to see it in a 40 inch+ screen.

Serjikal_Strike5457d ago

Its just a fad...

everyone knew this already

ATiElite5456d ago

actually 3D has been around since it was patented by William Friese-Greene in the 1890's.

3D has been a FAD that comes and goes once every decade. More of a gimmick that is tossed on top of TV film and now gaming as the tech evolves.

Except for iMax theaters 3D will be gone very soon (gone after someone slaps 3D on cellphones) until next decade.

Chaostar5457d ago (Edited 5457d ago )

Recently been to the cinema to see both Kung-Fu Panda and Green Lantern in 3D. Actually heard a kid say that he wouldn't see it in 2D because that would be "crappy" compared to 3D.

With all the newest movies including the new Harry Potter coming in 3D, I fail to see how 3D has a "gloomy future".

GamerSciz5457d ago

Agreed, I just saw GL 3D yesterday and it looked good. However the highlight of my night was seeing Transformers 3 Trailer in 3D. Holy hell that blew me away.

kaveti66165457d ago

I fail to see how anecdotal evidence justifies such a claim.

Chaostar5457d ago

Harry Potter is coming in 3D, that was my evidence. Let me put this in perspective for you.

Harry Potter is one of the biggest book/film franchises in the world. The past movies have proven it does not need 3D to sell tickets yet for the final installment they have choosen to shoot in full stereoscopic 3D. I don't have to tell you how many copies of the dvd/bluray are going to sell and a good percentage of the kids that see it in 3D will want the same experience in their home.

My point being that if one of, if not, THE biggest movie franchises has adopted 3D for it's final and probably most important installment then I'd say that reflects well on the future of 3D. The anecdote was just that, with no claim attached to it.

metsgaming5457d ago

11 millions homes in 3d by 2016, i think it will be more than that, the number seems very low.

godslayer4295457d ago

i agree, and once those sony tvscome out there will be even more 3dtvs out there

Soldierone5457d ago

Consumers barely made the switch to HD. Glasses free TV's have yet to be cheap and hit mainstream, and 3D still has a long way to go for innovation.

Plus people like me couldn't care less about it. 11 Million is about right, it will be somewhere around there. Maybe 13 at max.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio33d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing33d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9233d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit33d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing33d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9233d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
