PS3 hacker thinks he's 'going to jail soon'

'Graf_Chokolo', as hacker Alexander Egorenkov is known online, is in a court battle with Sony after hacking the PS3 in order to restore OtherOS to the system.
Sony sued Egorenkov, with him also forced to remove any content on his website that relates to his actions. The website has now turned into a donations page to help him cover court costs.
However, the money seems to have run dry with the hacker telling his followers via his website:
"Hi guys, no money left anymore. Going to jail soon probably because i cannot pay court costs.

sucks seeing as all this guy was trying to do is restore OtherOS compared to some of the hackers who was/are just hacking with hopes of pirating.

alousow5501d ago (Edited 5501d ago )

HACK = HACK thats how SONY see it, he shouln't have try to do none of that, buy a game put it in and enjoy, just like any other gamer. he deserves it.

mistajeff5501d ago

cmon, trying to install linux on a machine that once allowed it to be installed is a far cry from breaking the system so that you can play games for free, or breaking a network in order to steal personal information. he's not trying to hurt sony, and unlike the recent attacks, he's not trying to hurt the playstation consumer base either. i hope they handle this rationally and don't take out all of their aggravation over the PSN outage on this one person who had absolutely nothing to do with any harmful attacks against sony or sony's customers.

peace.

Eamon5501d ago (Edited 5501d ago )

It doesn't matter how Sony sees it. Sony isn't a God. This guy, morally, did nothing wrong at all. And it just shows how broken a law system is if the defendant can't have a fair case because he ran out of money.

blackbeld5501d ago (Edited 5501d ago )

Sony doing this is not good for the PR.

I hope they take it with care.

He only want to bring OtherOS back on his PS3. I don't see why Sony want him to go jail for.

Sony is going to far. Just give that boy his money back and take back the PS3. That is more fair trade.

If Sir Ken Kutaragi father of Playstation is still at Sony he will never aloud Sony to go this far.

That Kaz Hiarai making Playstation a bad name.

radphil5501d ago (Edited 5501d ago )

@Eamon & blackbeld

You guys must have forgotten the part where he THREATENED the company by saying if they went after him he'd release his stuff to the public.

Eamon5500d ago

And he did distribute it after Sony went after him and rightly so.

I'm sorry but logic dictates it's much worse for a powerful international company to pursue and harass a single individual then send him to prison than for the architecture of a piece of hardware to be distributed on the internet.

If you think otherwise than you are retarded. End of. There is no excuse here. Also, for people who believe knowledge and education is a right and should not be restricted out of freedom of information, that threat is meaningless.

radphil5500d ago

@Eamon

Gotta love the "logic" you're going with:

"My way is right. You're wrong. Conversation over".

Eamon5499d ago

lol, well if I threaten to throw an apple over a fence if Sony decides to pursue, it's not so much of a threat now, is it?

It's educational information and the man would have released it regardless.

Didn't somebody sue Sony for illegally removing Linux from the PS3 ?

I hope Sony looses big time. If they win it will set a bad exemplar and incentive other big companies to follow.

Trunkz5501d ago

Hackers deserve to go to jail, would you bail out someone who raped a little girl? A Crime is a crime and he raped sony.

zeal0us5501d ago

You're comparing hacker to a rapist, if that not one of the worst analogy I have seen.

jke825501d ago

if he really REALLY REALLY wanted otheros in there he shouldnt have upgraded his firmware, that right there proves he was doing it not for other os but to actually hack the ps3, if he really wanted to have other os dont do the firmware update, keep your other os and hacks offline.....the other os excuse is just a crutch for the hackers.....its your fault you upgraded to the new firmware that took it away, its your fault you agreed to the EULA that has clauses aginst hacking, its your fault your outta money and gonna get thrown in jail for your idiocy.........stop blameing sony for YOU breaking the law...........

retarded hackers

lelo2play5500d ago (Edited 5500d ago )

what if he wanted to play the latest games ?

Games shouldn't have obligatory firmware updates, that even if the user doesn't want, he is required to update his firmware.

Obligatory updates should be illegal.

TBM5500d ago

i pretty much don't give a rats ass if he goes to jail. maybe if he was smarter he wouldnt be where he is now lol.

thats it! im donating money to him! 10 pounds on its way to you!

to the disagrees i was being sarcastic.

wenaldy5501d ago

"Hi guys, no money left anymore. Going to jail soon probably because i cannot pay court costs."

I thought hackers were rich..

haymoza5501d ago

They will come to a settlement. I don't care how strongly he believes in his principals. He will settle. He's just frustrated that he haz no moneyz.

But seriously,if he does go to jail, he's a lot stupider than I imagined. because he can pull a geohot when the going gets tough.

mastiffchild5501d ago

I'd respect him a lot more if he DIDN'T sell out his principles the way Geohot MUST have done. You think Sony just settled and got NOTHING in return for all the money spent on court? We may never know what Hotz told Sony to save himself but you can bet it wasn't edifying and he won't feel good about it-especially after taking everyone's cash to FIGHT the case.

Maybe This guy's just gutted the cash ran out and he cannot fight on but, also, ,maybe the settlement is beyond him morally and in that case is he stupid not to bend over?I don't agree with him, not at all, but I admit I'd admire him a little if he stood up for his beliefs and didn't run like the turncoat liar Hotz did. Nothing clever about selling out when people have paid your costs SO you'll stand up for them all and nothing stupid about having strong feelings.

Valkyre5501d ago

hi guys, I need money too, I am fighting government corruption, if you want to, please donate!

Anything helps! Thanks!

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8578d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele78d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk77d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay77d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10178d ago (Edited 78d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit77d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg77d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10177d ago (Edited 77d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14978d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle91d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit91d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog91d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog91d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad91d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_91d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage91d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda91d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
