Irrational: BioShock "failed" in its world design

BioShock Infinite executive producer believes Rapture was “unbelievable”, but didn’t give you a proper sense being in an underwater city.

I hate it when devs come out and talk about how their older game was poor and the new game is going to be awesome

Inside_out5449d ago

.
Bioshock 1 was a master piece. This is the same tactic that ALL devs use and it's getting really old. It seems that the only way to market the new game is to destroy the last game.

LocO_o5449d ago (Edited 5449d ago )

Bioshock 1 was a master piece and still holds it own up to this day.

I see what the producer is saying - if it was not for the few clips that they showed of the deep ocean I would not have rememberd that I was actully thousands of feet under water.

If you watched moves like The Abyss, Sphere, Santum you would know what he is talking about.

Edit: Even COD Black Ops did a good job on the fianl mission to make you feel like you were under water.

andron5449d ago

Nah, your taking this the wrong way. They are acknowledging the shortcomings of their previous work in light of what they are doing today. Doesn't mean they hate or think the previous game was bad.

All in all it's a good thing for developers to say what they mean and be open to changing things that could have been better...

led10905449d ago

Bioshock was one amazing game, and even if the games creators come and tell me it was bad i wouldn't believe them

MidnytRain5449d ago

He didn't say it was bad, he basically said that they didn't flesh out the viewable world of the game.

Spinal5449d ago

Yeah Bioshock 1 was so awesome. Bioshock 2 however which was made by different devs sucked eggs. I do look forward to Bioshock infinite but thats now with a pinch of salt.

Quagmire5449d ago (Edited 5449d ago )

Bioshock 2 didint suck, it Just didnt have the same amazement and charm about it the first one had.

If Bioshock 2 was released first, you wouldve thought it to be a masterpiece.

LightofDarkness5449d ago

Why? You just said the original was awesome and the sequel sucked due to different developers.

If the new game is to be developed by those who developed the original, how does the failure of the second tarnish your anticipation of the new one?

LocO_o5449d ago (Edited 5449d ago )

If you liked Bioshock 1 then you would like Bioshock two as Bioshock two was more of more 1 with new perks ans story.

Seem goes with Fall Out Vegas and Fall Out 3.

mastershredder5449d ago

yups.

Love that BioShock 2 wastes no time setting getting you back in action.
The strategy elements in this game rock. BS2 is a very worthy sequel.

DigitalRaptor5449d ago (Edited 5449d ago )

BioShock 1 was a masterpiece because it was fresh, innovative and highly enjoyable. It was deep, it was mature. The atmosphere and gameplay was incredible and really genuine to what was happening around you.

I think BioShock 2 was great, I really enjoyed it. However, the reason it wasn't as good as the first was because we were already familiar with Rapture and the atmosphere was slightly less creepy. The story and characters also weren't quite as good. It was developed by 2K Marin after all - they did a great job.

But I like that Irrational can positively critique their previous work, even though it's an undoubted masterpiece. They have to really - that's how you create an even better game in future. I'm excited that they're building upon the principles and mechanics they set out in the first game, but basing it in a different time frame and setting, and amping everything up.

I think when it comes out in 2012, Infinite will be just as fresh as the original was when it came out in 2007. It's gonna blow us all away!

Whatever, self critiquing. Bioshock is spectacular. They will say the same thing later after they finish Infinite. Coulda, woulda, shoulda....Bioshock is certainly not built on indecision and incompletion.

Can't wait for Infinite. I can already see myself getting pwned by the ai, because I was gawking at the vistas.

MidnytRain5449d ago

You have to self-critique if you want to make better games in the future..

Bioshock was and still is one of my favorite games of all time.

Bioshock is one of my favourites franchises. I love all 3 games and have played each several times. I even have a room in my house that is loosely decorated around the theme of Bioshock (with a Lighthouse, coral models and postcards styled as though they are from both Rapture and Columbus).

And yet I am going to find it extremely difficult to get even remotely excited about any future episode in the series after all the problems this has had in its development cycle.

Leave the franchise alone. Remaster them again if you have to. Then put whatever talent you have to use on something brand new.

Furesis294d ago

Since ken levine isn't involved i'm not surprised what's going on. i'm more excited for his next game which looks like bioshock. Yet he still works under take2 and they are making bioshock 4 without him, strange situation.

toxic-inferno294d ago

Yes. Judas. Looks brilliant, but it's one of those games that seems to never have had a release date. Instead it's had release windows that keep getting pushed back.

Once it's ready, I'll be there for it though. Ken Levine is an excellent developer.

I get the feeling he dissolved Irrational Games simply so that 2k couldn't tell him what to do. It seems it will pay off, but I feel sorry for those who worked as part of Irrational before it was dissolved, who hadn't independently made a name for themselves.

ActualWhiteMan293d ago

He didn’t even want to make 2, that’s why they did it without him.

Rebel_Scum294d ago

tbh it wouldnt be a Bioshock game without development hell. They all had it.

Michiel1989293d ago

bioshock 2 was 2.5 years after 1, so much of a development hell it was......

-Foxtrot293d ago

"Remaster them again if you have to"

Well apparently they were doing a remake but that got cancelled

Relientk77294d ago

It sucks this game is in development hell because I love BioShock and would love a 4th game. I hope it turns out great, but I guess we'll see.

P_Bomb294d ago

Love Bioshock. It’s too bad what’s going on. At least we have Judas.

Yui_Suzumiya293d ago (Edited 293d ago )

It's been in development hell since 2014. This is nothing new. It saddens me because it's one of my favorite series. At this point, Judas may end up releasing first.

BABI-PANGPANG293d ago

Bioshock 4 (if it ever comes out) will probably still look and play like a Bioshock game, but without Kevin, it might miss that spark that made the originals so special. Honestly, Judas might end up feeling more like the real spiritual successor.
