Sony: Hackers Are Geniuses

Sony may not like the fact that the PlayStation Network was hacked, but Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, has praised hackers’ abilities; so much so, that he’s calling them geniuses.

He's right about that, nobody knows who they're gonna attack next. Hacker ego inflation will now continue.

I_find_it_funny5458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

Shuhei Yoshida is really cool

Tank_Commander_E65458d ago

Nice move Mr.Yoshida ; ) I think that's all hackers really want is some recognition and respect for their skills and after that they'll f**k off.

So now that you've gotten it.... haha

HSx95458d ago

Yes! lets ignore the millions of accounts compromised by it and praise them instead!

MAJ0R5458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

@above
oh come on you know he wasn't saying that, you need to look at this stuff with context

hay5458d ago

I bet they don't like Battlefield 3 too.

paintsville5457d ago

The hackers are brilliant, that's true. However, Sony in their arrogance chose not to correct vunerablilities in their security. I mean, you can't use things like "plain text" for user information and transactions!!! Even an 8th grade programmer would know better!! Let put the blame where it should be, SONY.
I mean if you left on vacation for a week and didn't lock up your house and everyone knew you had a million dollars lying on the couch then you come home and it's gone...who's fault is that??????????? YOURS

"He also gave a straight answer to the hosts, saying that he agrees that Sony should have been doing more in the first place before the PSN outage."

Admitting once fault is the first step and more confidence is restored in Sony once they recognize the problem!

DragonKnight5458d ago

Oh would you give it a rest. No one that matters lost any confidence in Sony at all. Only hacker fanboys like you made the problem seem worse than it was. I remember you publicly stated on this very site that Sony should hire you to beef up their security. As though you could have done anything to prevent hackers from getting in.

Sony has always taken the path of humility in this situation, this is just another example. Sony have more than made up for something that wasn't their fault to begin with. Hackers had a choice to make, they chose to break in. Plain and simple. No amount of security is hacker proof, merely hacker resistant.

So drop it you tool.

Are you mad your favorite company got hacked?

More joyful information for you:

http://kotaku.com/5812053/r...

... and yes, they should hire me! Especially Sony Pictures whom got attacked with a sql injection attack and stored passwords in the plain:

http://www.techairlines.com...

I promise NOT to be so careless! Enjoy....

DragonKnight5458d ago

"Are you mad your favorite company got hacked?"

Nope. Because unlike the childish morons, of which you are part of, I understand that in the world of information technology, nothing is 100% secure. Sure, losing PSN for a month sucked, but thankfully I'm an old-school gamer who has survived without online gaming for over 2 decades. I went back to play some excellent quality games such as Suikoden 2, Final Fantasy VII, and Final Fantasy X. Brought to you in part by Sony Computer Entertainment. In the world of adults, you'll find that the rational among us have other means by which to entertain ourselves. The irrational, and idiotic, chose to blame the victim and praise the criminal.

"More joyful information for you:"

Kotaku is your source? Instantly discredited. Did you even read the entire article? Did you see how circumstantial it was? Did you cross-reference it with all official information? Of course you didn't because you blame Sony for being hacked. For goodness sake they use a source by which you need to subscribe to see the information. And they completely disregard THE LAW, which would FORCE Sony (and at least the security firms they hired to deal with the PSN issue) to be completely forthcoming to official investigators. AND, even IF we can trust Kotaku's word on this, "We hadn't figured out (at that time) what kind of data had been leaked. If only passwords and IDs (were breached), they cannot be considered personal information, and so we didn't want to bewilder our customers." That quote right there supports Sony's moves. How in the hell can Sony come out and say exactly what data was breached if they didn't have a firm grasp on it? Why would they come out, damage their stock and consumer confidence, on unconfirmed and speculative information? Are you really this dense or do you work at it?

"... and yes, they should hire me! Especially Sony Pictures whom got attacked with a sql injection attack and stored passwords in the plain."

Oh yeah, they should definitely hire a hacker fanboy like you. You wouldn't ever leak information to your hacker friends at all. No, you don't promote hackers in any way. Please. Get over yourself. Storing information in plain text is not as uncommon as you think. It's probably more likely than unlikely that most sites store in such a way for easy transference of data over a secure line. But of course, you and this article blow the situation entirely out of proportion, acting as though nothing has ever been hacked until Sony came along, and this is teh biggest hax in teh history of teh hax."

Go ahead, continue supporting hackers and the crimes they commit, continue blaming the victims of hackers. Just makes you more and more of a tool. This isn't about fanboyism, it's about simple facts that you choose to ignore because it's "cool" to hate on Sony and blame them for everything. Hey, why don't you look for an article that connects Lulzsec's attacks with the outrage for OtherOS removal. I bet you're one of those nutjobs that thinks it was an advertised feature and shouldn't have been removed, even though it wasn't and you never used it.

Ilikegames765458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

Kotaku is a pro xbox 360 site, so discredited. What about the CIA, Citibank, Escapist, Bethesda and other big websites that were hacked? Does that mean that their website were lacking in security? Your avatar name alone says a lot about your preference.

gamingdroid5458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

You can try and discredit Kotaku, but you can go one step closer to the source, KYODO NEWS citing OFFICIAL JAPANESE GOVERNMENT documentation!

"According to a report from Kyodo News, citing official Japanese government documentation, Sony Computer Entertainment knowingly delayed telling the public about the extent of an attack on its PlayStation Network so as not to "bewilder" its customers."

This is not a "form one of our trusted source"....

DragonKnight5458d ago

Yeah, raise your hand if you're going to subscribe to KYODO News to see if gamingdroid isn't a hacker fanboy tool. That's what I thought.

The very idea that Sony would break the law to withhold information FOR A DAY is ludicrous. Just admit you're a tool that wants to blame victims instead of criminals and be done with it.

Oh, I also forgot to add self-serving. Hurting for cash are we? No one's going to hire a hacker fanboy to help with "security".

onanie5458d ago

Lost in translation, perhaps. The original text could quite easily have meant that Sony wanted to assess the situation in its entirety so that it could give its customers accurate information.

It took time, and could have been done prematurely and suboptimally, which would only "bewilder" the recipients of such information.

Dee_915457d ago (Edited 5457d ago )

LMAO
Gamingdroid still going at I see .. I can understand the agrees but what some of you dont realize is that hes been changing up his argument since day 1 of the hack .. he is just grasping at strings to try to make his by now 4th arguement .. btw he was proven wrong on the last 3
1. It was sony fault and he used the rapist excuse
2.He just knew our CC werent encrypt because of some no name site
3. He claimed the info that wasnt encrypt was just as valuable as CC info .. all which proved to be false
now he on another arguement or back to #1 where some way .. some how its all sony fault

Hey smart guy after you get robbed your always gunna say you couldve prevented it ... keyword "couldve" .. but sense we human dont have the ability to see the future there will always be a couldve shouldve wouldve .. Sony couldve prevented this .. no doubt with the information they have now .. but unfortunately they couldn't see the future to do so

No they arent. It doesnt take a lot of brains to organize a DDOS attack. You just need a lot of willing sheep to overload the server for you. Anonymous is in no shortage of people.

xDaRkModEx5458d ago

I didn't know DDOS could leak 77 million account info.....

Eamon5458d ago

nopunctuation, he is referring to the hacker who got hold of 77 mil of private data.

Not the anons who were DDoSing.

Adam21015458d ago

swice5458d ago

Yeah that would go over really well... :-/

morkendo235458d ago

how could you call a threat to your company geniuse move?? if that what it takes to get rid of HACKERS guess they are geniuse.

SonyPS3605458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

That's quite pathetic really.

"They must be genuises to have hacked us".

Hozi895458d ago

Maybe SONY is so full of themselves so they are congratulating the hackers who got through their security.

I think right now, LulzSec is just attacking everyone, it's ridiculous. It's just plain stupid, and I hope they're caught, for the good of everyone. Why did they go after Bethesda? or Escapist Magazine? Seems pointless.

ZombieAssassin5458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

The problem with LulzSec is they are stupid, most "real" hackers would rather remain anonymous and just set back and watch chaos ensue but these guys gloat about it and tell everyone what they have done...eventually they will be caught because of this.

just_looken5458d ago

so fn true zombie hacking is a old subject but people like luzsac are making it a fad. "look at me i hacked obmas cellphone im go to jail radical".

iforgotmylogin5458d ago

i kinda think its funny
it shows flaws in the system

they got a twitter account
and multiple irc chanels
and pastebin uploads and such

yet they arent caught with all that public info
so it makes you wonder how good they are to the fact that the government hasnt tracked them down yet.

Ilikegames765458d ago

Right now they picked a fight with Anonymous members from 4chan. I wonder if anyone got a website with a blow-by-blow update on the fight.

BrianG5458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

I agree gaffyh.

They are probably just taking advantage of weak security systems, or ones with flaws they know how to exploit so they can get their name out there.

Even if the companies they hack don't make sense, it helps their image. Makes them look like the hackers to fear.

Hopefully they make a mistake with all this hacking and end up getting caught. Someone has to slip up eventually.

MWong5458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

The thing I am geting from LulzSec is they are going after these companies to just show they can and nobody is safe. Also maybe they are trying to show up Annonymous.

It's really giving hackers a bad name. A lot of the gaming community used to think hackers we for us. Now it just looks like they want to just flex some muscle and show they are untouchable.

I hope they get caught soon, because this is getting crazy.

Ilikegames765458d ago

You inform those companies, not steal information from them and leak them on the internet through torrent. LulzSec are a bunch of criminals if you go by their actions.

Fishy Fingers5458d ago

Well these "dudes in their mums basement" as many like to see it, are beating the so called security experts quite easily.

gamingdroid5458d ago

You would be surprised that the average hacker isn't likely to be a kid. It's just the once that get caught are the kids... script kiddies don't really count.

THWIP715458d ago

...in this comment section you've used "once" in place of "ones". Not sure why that annoys me so so much...but please stop it. :o

Biggest5458d ago

To be fair, most of the attacked websites/companies aren't in need of security experts. Sony should have obviously been more vigilant, but Escapist Magazine wouldn't really care as much. The cost of real security isn't worth it for them.

bozebo5458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

What Biggest said.

To be honest, the only way to protect from a DDoS attack is to be huge - so er... that leaves Google as the only safe ones.

gamingdroid5458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

You put as much security as is necessary to deter the hackers to go to a different target.

Epic Games, Bethesda and so on are minor sites that use off the shelf software. The data they keep are hardly valuable beyond spam you get in your email, and they hashed the password.

I think Sony Pictures hack was pretty scary unveiling though, access through SQL injection? No password hashing?

What are we in 1999?

@bozebo

There are ways to protect yourself from DDoS attacks as well, by intelligent tracking packets and filtering. You have to have the infrastructure in place before it happens though. However, the type of attacks here aren't DDoS, they are network breaches to obtain data.

MGRogue20175458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

... I don't know about that.. Sure, they're good with technology & whatnot.. but they aren't always the most successful in life.

All hackers are good at is being able to get stuff for free & pissing off companies.

I wonder if he tried to stop Shawn Layden from starting it?

Profchaos29d ago

Technically horizon came out in 2020 under Jim Ryan who took over in 2019

It's hard to tell who initiated the project but the Decima engine makes porting to PC fairly easy so who honestly knows if this was Jim's initiative or not I get the feeling it was

Redemption-6429d ago (Edited 29d ago )

It's actually not hard at all. Shawn Layden said he started it. Shawn Layden has confirmed that he was behind the strategy to bring PlayStation exclusive games to PC. Regardless of whether you hate Jim or not this wasn't his idea. It happened during his watch, but it was started before he took over. Below are links with him confirming it started with him

Sony already said they weren't porting to PC anymore. Or, at least that is how I interpreted a couple of articles. I think if it were not for Helix, that may not have happened.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

S2Killinit34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199234d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga34d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box35d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion34d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7235d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.
