CoD4 Hacked: Modding Tarnishes a Legacy Title

From the PlanetXbox360.com Feature Editorial:

"Last April, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was compromised when a hacker corrupted the game causing Xbox Live to send out "potential phishing attempts." That problem received immediate attention from Microsoft and Infinity Ward, and the issue has since been resolved. So why is it that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has been experiencing hacking problems on Xbox Live since February 2011, but nothing has been done about it?"

lol at everyone who thinks Activison cares about thier past game, youre supposed to buy mw3 not whine about cod4

evrfighter15449d ago

this is the path you guys chose when you decided you were gonna buy the same game every year.

you really expect these titles to be supported a few years from now?

MaxXAttaxX5449d ago

Good thing only less than 10% of console gamers buy COD each time.

COD4 Hacked: Modding Tarnishes a Legacy Title on the XBOX 360

Fixed...

Doesn't matter anyway, a few years from now when next gen rolls in they will shut off online services for all previous console COD's at some point, rendering them useless for anything accept the horrid single player modes.

PC COD will live on as long as someone hosts a dedicated server (forever) Plus this hacking crap gets utilized correctly on PC and they become mods running on mod servers.

Fail article.

RedSky5449d ago

If consolers had private dedicated servers, it would be an easy matter of kick'n'ban.

lil Titan5449d ago

the first one was ok but the "name" itself didnt tarnish its self though?

ChrisW5449d ago

I've got an honest question. Do other FPSs like Bad Company 2 get hacked as bad on Xbox Live?

Warprincess1165449d ago

Who cares. That game is irrelevant.

-Alpha5449d ago

It's not, lots of people still play

Dart895449d ago

No it's not it's the best cod this gen any game after it just sux big time.

curtis_boy5449d ago

LMFAO how can the best Call of duty game before it took a landslide in money greed and bullshit be IRRELEVANT!!! I bet you cant wait for MW3 to release so you can pay $60 for the most RELEVANT!!I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion though.

No Way5449d ago

You're irrelevant. >.<

The game is a blast, I still play from time to time.

Kon5449d ago

You are irrelevant to N4G

news4geeks5449d ago

Both warprincess and kon are integral to n4g. They are married in the real world and we get to hear their bickering xD

Ser5449d ago

No, it's pretty far from irrelevant.

In my opinion, it's the best CoD in the entire franchise.

rezzah5449d ago

might be true, the only other good cod games ever made were 1 and 2.

3...well that went down the same path as cod 5 and 7...

Too bad, and very unfortunate for 360 fans.

I got back into COD4 over the week on PSN and everything is great on this end. Would hate something like this to plague one of my favorite online games of all time

nepdyse5449d ago

Then i must be playing a different game, because i can barely get into a game, and when i do get into one i get "connection interruption." And i have a 20m/b internet connection, so that's not it.

radphil5449d ago (Edited 5449d ago )

@nepdyse

Heard of ports and NAT? Connection speed isn't the only thing that determines one having a good connection or not.

Even if one had 1TB speed, doesn't mean jack if the floodgates only allow 20b of it to go through.

nepdyse5448d ago

I set my router to DMZ for the ps3 also gave it a static ip address opened all the usual psn ports 80,3075,3074 and I have an Open Nat. What gives.

radphil5448d ago

a few things:

for 3074-5 are they UDP/TCP, etc

Also check this out:

Here:

and here:

Plus the reason of my comment was that you only mentioned your connection speed, and not the other information. Hopefully that will get things situated for you.

iamnsuperman5449d ago

I do not get some of the hacks. Its like what is the point. You play to kill people online in such away that they can kill you. The one where you automatically kill the enemy doesn't make sense. How in any way is that fun

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5449d ago

Is that xclusive modtard still running around cod4 on psn?

floetry1015449d ago

I've been playing it a little on PSN recently, the only modded lobbies I've encountered are super-speed and unlimited ammo, neither of which are game breaking and can be a lot of fun. They aren't frequent enough to be annoying, but they pop up every few play sessions and actually break up the monotony quite nicely. I don't own Cod4 on 360, so I couldn't speak for them in that regard.

There are people that hack to ruin the experience and there are people that mod to amp up the fun.

nepdyse5449d ago

Do you get into games easily. I just can't seem to get into a game on the PSN and when i do i'm plagued with connection interruptions. I own the game for both systems btw. Is it because there are less people on the psn cod4 servers? Because i get host 9 times out of 10 when i play on the xbox, but i suck super hard with the xbox controllers so i try to stick with the ps3.

vickers5005449d ago

I played CoD4 the other day at my friends house on ps3 and encountered a modded lobby. Fast running, fire without reload, and rapid noob tubing (like being able to shoot 3 noob tubes a second fast), and the game is STILL much more balanced than mw2. That's pretty sad.

floetry1015449d ago

@nepdyse, I do generally get into games easily (Australian btw). The problem is, because it isn't region locked, I'll enter a heap of North American hosted games, but I can put up with it from time to time.

@vickers, haha, well said. The unlimited noob tubing makes for some ridiculous frame dropping as well. Hilariously over the top though.

This is a great reminder of how game sales have become more concentrated in a smaller number of games/series over time. In the PS1/PS2 era a game was a success if it sold a million or a few million copies. The GTA games (3/Vice City/San Andreas) were pretty big outliers in selling as much as they did during the PS2 era. So in the minds of a lot of gamers something like FF VII feels like it was as big of a PS1 game as God of War 2018 was for PS4, but in reality far fewer people bought it (though it has obviously reached additional people through remasters, etc.).

StoneTitan243d ago

this was alwalys the case and will always be the case. with everything

Zerobalance243d ago (Edited 243d ago )

What this says to me is, not many people are buying a PS to play PS exclusives. Like so many false narratives, like Xbox gamers don't buy games! It seems Playstation as a default system is a vanilla system to play call of duty, Minecraft, GTA games and a sports games.

badz149243d ago (Edited 243d ago )

if you look back into the PS history, it has always been the 3rd parties who sells the most games. it was just that the PS1 and PS2 were so dominant that many of those 3rd party games were exclusives. so, back during the PS1 and PS2 days, the strategy was "to sell as many consoles as possible in order to sell more 1st party exclusives" to ride on that wave. The strategy to push many 1st party exclusives to sell consoles only started with the PS3 when many of those prior 3rd party exclusives went multiplat but more accurately, it started with the PSP.

Sony saw with the PSP, which was being trounced in sales by the DS, that 3rd party exclusives are hard to come by if you're not dominating the market. So they started building more 1st party games and when the PS3 were facing difficulties in sales, they knew they had to rely on their own to differentiate the PS3 from the 360. So the strategy back then changed to "release more 1st party exclusives in order to sell more consoles".

the only manufacturer that is still consistently selling their hardware to play 1st party exclusives, is Nintendo, and that was because they gave up the armrace for power thus they can't rely on 3rd parties anymore as all multiplats play better on competing consoles. AND that's also why they are the most ominous in going after emulators and also patent trolling!

so, you're not wrong there, but not an "aha!" moment or anything. it has been this way since the last, at least, 15 years for Playstation.

Deathdeliverer242d ago

@zerobalance

So... what this tells you is that Call of duty, being the absolute check writer that it is, has been outsold by Last of us, God of war, 2 Spider man games..... Saying Playstation exclusives doesn't sell is like saying call of duty doesn't sell because they have outsold some of iterations. Does that make sense to you?

Will be interesting to see what sort of numbers GP users draw in come tomorrow. It is believed that this is one many have been waiting for.

658d ago
thesoftware730658d ago

Darth,

That is not accurate; this game is old, and most people who want it have already bought it. You might get a small number of subs, but we will mostly see a good influx of players(not new subs) from people with Game Pass who will try it, which is what happened with D4.

CoD: BO 6 will be the test for actual sub numbers.

darthv72657d ago

That's fair... seeing as many have been saying they want CoD in GP. My comment was more of , now that its here... what can it do. Im sure there will be other titles in the franchise that will either entice or turn off different users.

Bathyj658d ago

No one's buying a console and signing up for a monthly bill just to get this game to avoid buying it. That's ridiculous. Besides everyone bagged the crap out of this on release for the 4 hour campaign.

andy85658d ago

Sweet. Never got round to it on release. I'll give the campaign a go

chicken_in_the_corn657d ago

Severly underrated game. Big improvement over 2.

Why MW 2019 is still the best looking Call of Duty to date

MW 2019 is five years old at this point and on previous gen hardware, but it is still the best looking Call of Duty game to date.

MW was an excellent videogame. They messed up Spec Ops big time, but aside from this it was a huge step in the right direction initially. Most notably, at launch it seemed to come from a very cohesive creative vision that was felt across gameplay, to story to art style/visual direction. It was also very notably written by prominent ex-Naughty Dog guys that quit almost immediately before release.

That COMPLETELY dissolved through post-launch content and the full pivot to a "cross-mode" narrative that completely obliterated the cohesion in overall story direction. Warzone then "became" the new face of Call of Duty and the franchise completely removed itself from anything remotely creatively "good". It is a pure money machine, so I kinda get why they're doing it....but I personally completely lost interest.

I would love to see Infinity Ward move off CoD and get to make their own product with full control. They clearly have some massive talent in their ranks but it's perverted by Activision's corporate interests.
