Nintendo Sets Game Plan to Keep Players

Nintendo's as cagey as tech companies come, but the WSJ is reporting on a recent and unusual high level, high impact strategy presentation where in top 'Tendo execs revealed what's described as a change in its current business model: using its foothold in the video game market to sell casual gamers and non-gamers products focused more on utilitarian functions. You know, boring stuff -- like, stuff that's not games. What they want to sell Nintendo wouldn't specifically say, but they're focusing first on the flagship portable, the DS, rolling out what the WSJ describes as "features [that] will be useful in places like train stations, amusement parks or museums and [that] could be accessed wirelessly," as well as a new "television-programming feature for the Japanese market... to check television listings, run searches by keyword and genre, and highlight each family member's favorite programs." Maybe this pseudo-DVR like functionality will somehow play into their forthcoming 1seg tuner, but precisely how the rest of this completely underwhelming and disappointing news will manifest itself is currently up to one's imagination -- something Nintendo's apparently lost. We have heard, though, they might be getting back into the playing card business, and possibly in keeping with that vertical integration, opening up a string of Nintendo themed casinos. Not a bad business to be in. [Warning: subscription required]

Because the DS is sure as hell not going anywhere. The Wii, on the other hand, doesn't have game buyers. It has fad buyers. If they don't act quickly, it might be too late.

Sam Fisher6703d ago

and they would get bored of it and just leav it in the closet and go buy sumthing new cuz the WUU is a fashion thing not anymore a gaming console

Zhuk6703d ago

Hopefully the Xbox 360 and PS3 will end up crushing the Wii, otherwise gaming as we know it is in trouble with all this 'casual' nonsense going on

john_doe6702d ago

Naah i don't think the situation is going to change in 2008... the wii will continue to sell like crazy.. and the big games are yet to come

ChickeyCantor6703d ago

@Zhuk
i hope Wii keeps crushing them both just to see you cry XD

I like to eat pie

See that's all I get out of most of your guys posts. You see a Wii article jump in it and just say mindless stuff. Why not stay in the news threads you want to hear about instead of meandering into those you care nothing for and bash away. I know you are upset that a pure gaming machine is beating a multimedia machine that also plays games but come on. Don't be hatin'.

ItsDubC6703d ago (Edited 6703d ago )

Agreed, if someone doesn't like something, why give it the time of day to habitually make demeaning posts about it? The only viable explanations hint at mental or maturity issues for said poster.

The PS3 currently doesn't appeal to me but you don't see me going out of my way to diss it on every occasion. In fact, if you are truly a fan of games, why would you not remain optimistic about upcoming titles regardless of which console they are to appear on? Play games, not consoles.

MyNutsYourChin6703d ago (Edited 6703d ago )

In my case, I would love to have a PS3 or 360 to play R&C or Too Human when it's out. Yet although I don't care for Sony or Microsoft, that isn't the force stopping me from purchasing or supporting their systems.

First, their systems are too expensive for me. Second, their systems include things I do not want or need. Third, for Sony, their games are not that good (currently, as I'm sure that will change as soon as the devs start understanding the architecture better) and for Microsoft, they have some serious problems with their technology (overheating and scratching discs).

Yes, the PS3 and the 360 have fantastic graphics and are way more powerful than the Wii but currently, that doesn't seem to matter now, does it? Ever hear of David and Goliath?

At first I was like, No Code Veronica on the list!? But then I seen Mainline. The list checks out, but I would personally put 2 over 4.

KwietStorm_BLM9d ago

I'll take 2 over 4 also. And even without a number, I don't see how Code Veronica, my other favorite in the franchise, isn't mainline when it's the actual sequel to RE2.

Rebel_Scum9d ago

The original RE was the best. Its not on the list which makes no sense.

The remake of it was alright but should be higher on this list.

-Foxtrot9d ago

The original RE smokes VII and Village, come on.

There are people defending paying 20 bucks individually for 20+ year old games running through emulation. Peak ridiculousness.

Neonridr12d ago

don't want them? Don't get them. Emulate them elsewhere. Were you expecting them to be free?

Inverno12d ago

PS1 classics on PS3 were 5 bucks bro. You've got to be completely brain dead to honestly believe that a 22 year old game being released through emulation is worth 20 bucks. There's absolutely no effort being put into this. Mega-Man Battle Network collection exists, that has online trading, and pvp and includes EVERY BN game with alternative versions.
They could've easily included both Red/Green in a bundle, have online play, online trading, HOME integration which they removed from the description because it won't have HOME integration. Could've added in Emerald and charged 30 bucks, hell they could've charged 40 and thrown in Crystal and the original Yellow in there. So people can play through the OG's and bring the OG Mons into the newer gen. But nah Ninty handed y'all a bag of shite for 20 bucks and y'all happily took it.

Neonridr11d ago

@Inverno - I'm not buying the games for the record. I'm not a huge Pokemon fan.

Profchaos12d ago

I'd rather buy it once and own it than have to pay a monthly subscription to play it on NSO

Vits12d ago

You don’t own them, though. You’re simply buying access to the game. It’s not really that different from NSO.

And absolutely nothing guarantees that this access will be transferable later in life to another, more modern system. Just look at Nintendo’s own Virtual Console.

Profchaos12d ago

@vits yes long term I agree but I don't have to pay to play the game monthly being the main point I was making it's only going to be an issue in 20.years but name a platform that won't have that problem

gold_drake12d ago

20 money for a single gba game is ridiculous

Profchaos12d ago

Yeah I'll be getting it I grew up with red

Relientk7712d ago

I really wish they'd make physical copies for these. I just saw a really cool physical bundle releasing in Japan and I'm jealous.
