There are alot of costs associated with launching new hardware. Everything from design and R&D get thrown in when the system hit's shelves and then there is the fact that new consoles retail for less than it costs to manufacture. Every professional analyst and of course Sony knew there would be a loss associated with launch this last 12 months. One of the main reasons for including Blu-Ray was to help Sony diversify and not rely so heavily on the Playstation brand to get them through every quarter. The company today is very different than what it was a decade or so ago when the original Playstation launched.

With that said, there really is no need for fanboys on either side of the fence to get so upset over PS3's sales numbers. Yes, it is not performing as well as Sony would like, but they are making adjustments to try and rectify this. Sure, I don't personally agree with many of the things they do, but I do realize I am not running a multi-billion dollar company either. It's healthy as gamers ot voice our opinions about what we want, but preaching impending doom and gloom for either company just makes you look silly.

Thanks for providing that informative post. When I come to N4G all I see is constant Sony bashing from the insecure XBot trolls waiting to see if the PS3's consumer demand will die out before their console at home will. You're doing a good job at keeping the Sony name high and ensuring that people know that the Sony corporation and the Playstation 3 are here to stay and will dominate XBox. as much as i love nintendo,nintendo did not expand the market for years.and never sold more than 100 million systems.because gaming was considered the thing kids play for entertainment.they should now with ds.don't know about the wii.but nintendo is a very innovative company.

microsoft on the other hand,has not expanded the market.it is only gathering a hardcore following of pc fans who love shooters.and now they can play them easily on television without upgrading.and have a better online service.but they didn't innovate with the hardware,the controller, and left the hard drive out when they made it standard.

so instead of being innovative,they copy the competition.instead of leading the industry.so they copy sony,the current leader.

they are copying hdmi,upgrading firmware to 1080p,adding a larger hard drive,when they said previously that it wasn't necessary.and now we got rumors of hd-dvd built in.they say no now.but then they said no about all the other stuff.then backpeddled.

xbox live can be seen as innovative.but it doesn't even come close to hardware innovation that people can see and touch.if you don't have xbox live,you can't "SEE" xbox live.but you can see a system.touch a controller.wave a hand in front of a camera.

but the X-tremists believe all their talk means anything when they can't see the OVERALL picture of what sony is doing.they thought sony was going to copy xbox live to a "T".but what happened?sony created HOME instead.which is not even close to xbox live.

A couple things, USB was out on the 360 prior to the PS3's release. Blu-toothe is just a fancy marketing term for wireless. The 360 also uses wireless technology.

The Cell is not a single chip. It is actually multiple Power PC chips that can run together to increase performance. This isn't exactly new technology. Intel and AMD are doing the same thing, but with less processors. The 360 uses the same architecture, but with 3 chips. Don't fall for the marketing hype, processor design in general is evolving quite fast. Sony is just marketing it the most.

Hi-def was first introduced to the public with the Xbox. Many games could be played in 720p. The 360 and PS3 which came out later could both go to the highest available standard. The differance between the two was how they do it. The PS3 which came out later uses HDMI as a standard output for hi-def. The 360 could attain 1080p through the use of VGA cables, but is less common. Inclusion of HDMI in the 360 is a result of consumer demand as HDTV's become more popular. The nice thing about the XBox 360 is it does support older HDTV's that only have 1080i, but no 720p support. This is much more user friendly than what Sony offers. Both machines are capable of the same resolutions, but the PS3 can trechnically do it longer since they have the additional storage space provided by Blu-Ray. We have not seen the affect Blu-Ray will have on gaming yet. Hopefully we will see it before the next generation of consoles arrive.

second,360 didn't even support 1080p until microsoft added upscaling to 1080p.but games that are coming out after 2 years aren't 1080p native.halo3 is not 1080p(not even freakin 720p.more like 640p-WTF).bioshock is not 1080p.gears is not 1080p.and so on.devs have put 1080p native games out not just from launch of ps3(RR7),but to this day.and more are coming.

as for hdmi,sony knew it was coming because they make TVS.so did every other hardware maker.but microsoft doesn't make TVs.they missed the memo on hdmi.and they tried to discredit hdmi.but then added it later with excuses.

sony wanted downloads years ago.it was to start with FFXI.but add-ons just don't sell in high enough numbers.that's why with ps3,sony made sure it was built in.microsoft knew sony wanted to deliver digital content.because they heard it from sony.

Actually the difference in the technology being used is quite significant. By your argument, why should people buy anything other than a PS2? That's where the Xbox360 is in terms of the kind of technology it brings to the table. If Sony sells a $20 disc that installs XMB and webbrowser software on any brand of external hard-drive via the USB ports, the $129 PS2 would have more useful functionality than an Xbox360 Premium and a far superior library of games.

where is MS profits: in software not in game division lol. If a normal compagny would have 1st Xbox it would have backrupt already. And what about the 1b lost on RROD? Woops. This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
